I can name over a dozen teams off the top of my head that could easily look to Beno as a possible starter, some of them elite teams:
Lakers
Farmar is their big guard prospect, and I highly doubt that since they signed Fish, and are trying to develop Farmar, that they not only offer the MLE for Beno, but even that he would get significant playing time, especially when he has the starting spot in Sac.
They will have cleared cap space next season, but Brand may opt out. Why would Beno sign with them? Brand could leave, and even if he doesn't, there's no telling how he and Livingston will play.
Portland has a bright future, but are unproven and Beno might not want to come off the bench in Portland when he could be a backup on better teams.
I don't think any free agent will want to join that mess.
It might be a strong contender for Beno. They have the space, and the talent to draw him there.
Denver (and A.I. to the 2)
76 mil being paid next year, and all of that possibly for a team that doesn't make the playoffs. If they fail this season, I don't see the nuggets looking to add more salary, but rather dump some by possibly moving players.
Go to the team that cut him? A team that already has Foye and Telfair? No.
This would be another team that would probably heavily pursue Beno. They don't have anything going on there other than the prospect of living near south beach though.
Rondo has shown improvement, and Beno would be competing for a starting spot. If Beno wants to win a chip comming off the bench, then he probably would go there.
Another Seattle situation. Why the hell would he choose to go there?
They just took on two huge contracts in Ben Wallace and Wally, and will only have 8, possibly 9 players under contract and still be paying 75 million in salary. I think their interest in Beno depends on how they perform in the playoffs this year. If Lebron says he wants more help, and the owners are willing to pay up, then I think they will make him an offer.
Charlotte (since they seem to want Felton at the 2)
What makes that team more attractive then the kings?
Nelson has a big contract, and I don't know if Beno will want to come off the bench with that team. Like Boston, if he feels he can win a chip, then I can see him comming off the bench.
And I mean, that was just off the top of my head. And it doesn't mean that all of those teams would offer, or that Beno is clearly ahead of what those teams have in every case -- but in every case he's right there and if they are unhappy with what they've got, a young guy who has averaged 15 and 5 as a starter this year might have a real attraction at MLE numbers. That's before we get to the Dallas and Phoenix situations where they need an heir to the current aging guys.
I can only see 3 or 4 realistic destinations other than Sacramento on that list.
The problem is that many of those teams offer things along with the money that we cannot -- winning, big cities, HOF players or coaches etc. So we may have to overpay to counter that and "show" Beno's agent how much we love him.
Beno knows "how much we love him." He made a comment recently about how the Kings are the team that gave him a chance, and how he won't forget that. Also, the extra things that some of these teams can offer like superstar franchise players, HOF coaches, and bigger and better locals might not be what interests Beno. We don't know what Beno wants. He may be the type of player who would rather start on a losing team then win a chip playing 10 minutes a game.
