Kings look ready to draft big man

There aren't many Kings-related certainties in this year's NBA draft, but there might be just one.

Another shooting guard -- or any player whose game resembles that of former draft picks Kevin Martin, Francisco García and Quincy Douby -- isn't likely headed to Sacramento.

That sound? It's the collective sigh of relief from a fan base eager to mix it up a bit this time.

Still, the possibilities before and during Thursday's event in New York are many. With the No. 10 pick that is their highest selection since 1998, the Kings look prepared to go big if China's Yi Jianlian, Florida's Joakim Noah, North Carolina's Brandan Wright or Washington's Spencer Hawes is still on the board.

That is, of course, if Ohio State point guard Michael Conley doesn't slip down into double-digit territory, thereby forcing a reconsideration based on talent alone and the prospect of securing the point guard spot for years.

Or, perhaps, they opt for Florida State small forward Al Thornton, who likely will be available and whose scoring ability is among the best in this talented lot.

All of this assumes that the Kings will keep the No. 10 pick. With much of their roster available for trades, potential deals might mean giving up the pick.

The Kings are said to have been among the most active in trade talks recently, with Mike Bibby and Ron Artest available should the right deal come along for basketball president Geoff Petrie.

Petrie also appears to be very interested in acquiring another pick in the first or second round, judging by the fact that the Kings have worked out at least a few prospects who have little or no chance of being selected in the top 10. Among them are Eastern Washington guard Rodney Stuckey and 7-foot-1 Ukrainian center Kyrylo Fesenko. What's more, 19-year-old Finnish point guard Petteri Koponen, who is projected as a late first-round pick at best, told the Arizona Republic that he had been worked out twice by the Kings.

Tuesday in Phoenix, Petrie took a second look at Noah in a workout that included Florida shooting guard Corey Brewer and Georgetown forward Jeff Green.

The 6-foot-11 Yi is the mystery man among the lottery-bound picks, but his athleticism and sheer speed would fit well if new coach Reggie Theus, as he has said, plans an up-tempo pace.

The comparisons to Yao Ming apply by their homeland alone, as Yi is more of a slasher than the plodding Yao. Last season with the Guangdong Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association, he averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds, good production for any age. Yet the unknowns that surround Yi also include his age, believed to be between 19 and 22.

Noah would bring the credibility that comes with being a leader on the back-to-back national champion Florida Gators. His defense, rebounding and energy would surely help the front line. Hawes' appeal is in his skill set, including a refined scoring ability beyond his 19 years and the ability to use both hands well. But if the Kings are determined to be more athletic, Hawes is not the right fit.

I normally don't highlight parts of articles but I thought it worth it this time.

I thought it especially interesting that Amick reported the Kings are among the most active in trade talks.

I don't think I'm going to sleep much before the draft. I'M PUMPED! I think we could make as many as 3 trades before all is said and done Thursday.

LET'S TURN THIS THING AROUND!

I'm cautiously optimistic but telling myself "one step at a time." And then I tell myself to shut up...

It gets really confusing being me sometimes!

:p

GO KINGS!!!

before scrolling down and reading this post, i was going to say... "thanks for highlighting everything."
I swear. lol

I like what I just read. Means nothing of course if the big man we like is not there.

Its great to hear that we have been one of the most active in trade discussions.

On the kids that we have worked out, I swear I had a funny feeling that Petrie would like to look at the kid from Finland who is highly rated in europe as an up and comer. So now that Petrie has seen Green in the work out it leaves us with only Horford that we haven't worked out or seen in a workout from the projected 3-10 picks.

I wonder if Petrie really likes someone in this draft a lot and is prepared to trade up, or is he going to pick best available at 10 and go on from there.

I have a feeling that by the time the draft is done we will have made NO trades. I dont know why, just a gut feeling. Thats not what I want but I just think thats whats gonna happen.

I don't even know how to take that considering I'm still standing in the house that you built. The clan of lowered expectations is still together right? I'd be OK with changing the name to the clan of slightly raised lowered expectations.

:D

I'm excited too. This is a highly anticipated draft and I have a feeling like we will have a great day.

Yeah I have the same feeling, if we make only one I'll be happy.

I'm excited for Thursday and not o.O

Interesting that we worked out Koppenen twice. Not the first time I've heard of him this offseason -- hsi stock is rising fast and there are apparently a number of teams interested in him. And when you are talking about a young 6'5" PG that could be a nice sleeper pick, if we can find a way to outmaneuver the competition there.

well i think i can speak for all when i say....shouldn't get our hopes up.. becuase we all know how the ball has been bouncing around here lately (unlucky)

but its soo good to see Petrie wont be drafting another "versitle" player give me a break

its all about the BIGS...lets go kings!

ESPECIALLY since all the HUGE rumors of KG, Kobe, Paul Pierce, Shawn Marion, Rashard Lewis, Zach Randolph, anything and everything in Boston, Memphis, Atlanta, ETC ETC ETC...there have been a LOT of rumblings in this department. It's amazing how Geoff keeps it all on the DL (if this is true).

I posted this in a thread in the Personnel Moves forum but I'll repeat it here, just because people seem to be under the mistaken impression the Kings have done a lot of draft week maneuvering in the past:

According to the Sacramento Kings Media Guide for 2006-2007, Geoff Petrie was signed with the Kings on June 1, 1994. Since then the Draft Week activities by the Kings have been:

6-29-94 - Drafted Brian Grant, Michael Smith and Lawrence Funderburke.
6-28-95 - Drafted Corliss Williamson, Tyus Edney and Dejan Bodiroga.
6-29-95 - Traded Spud Webb to Atlanta for Tyrone Corbin.
6-24-96 - Traded Sarunas Marciulionis and the #37 pick overall to Denver for Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf.
6-26-96 - Drafted Peja Stojavokic and Jason Sasser.
6-27-96 - Conveyed Sasser rights to Portland for "future considerations."
6-25-97 - Deafted Olivier St. Jean (Tariq Abdul-Wahad) and Anthony Johnson.
6-24-98 - Drafted Jason Williams and Jerome James.
6-30-99 - Drafted Ryan Robertson.
6-28-2000 - Drafted Hedo Turkoglu and Jabari Smith.
6-27-01 - Drafted Gerald Wallace and Maurice Jeffers.
6-27-01 - Traded Jason Williams and Nick Anderson to Vancouver for Mike Bibby and Brent Price. (NO draft picks involved).
6-26-02 - Drafted Dan Dickau. Traded Dickau rights to Atlanta for future first-round pick. Also drafted Corsley Edwards.
6-9-03 - Conveyed future first-round pick from Atlanta to Detroit in exchange for future first-round selection owed by Sacramento to Detroit from the 9/7/01 trade of Jon Barry for Mateen Cleaves.
6-23-03 - Acquired draft rights to Darius Songalia from Boston for two second-round draft picks (2003 and 2005).
6-24-04 - Drafted Kevin Martin and Ricky Minard.
6-28-05 - Drafted Francisco Garcia.
6-28-06 - Drafted Quincy Douby

Most of the Kings trades have NOT been done during Draft Week. And, of those that were, the biggest one (Bibby and Price for Williams and Anderson) didn't involve any draft picks.

The first annual meeting of K.F.U.A.D.T (Kings Fans United Against Drafting A Tweener) will be held at Players Sports Pub on draft night.

Directions to follow.......................;)

There is so much talk about this pick that I doubt he goes in the late first round. It won't surprise me to see him going in the teens.

well, I'm expecting Petrie to stand pat with what he has, and not make ANY trades. So if one happens, it will be a pleasant/unpleasant suprise to shake things up. I'm thinking its just constructive observations on GP's part. My guess is we pick Spencer Hawes and go home.

I agree...although while I'm bracing myself for this outcome, I think I'll still be a bit dissapointed. Hawes looks to have a lot of talent, but has the potential to be a frustrating NBA player - does some nice things around the basket, averages maybe 15 points a game, but is always disappointing with respect to defense, rebounding, and general passion for the game. I hope I'm wrong, because if we were to pick up a solid C in this draft to build around, it would be a nice starting point.

The more I see this guy the more I like him but we just don't have the pieces around him that could make him succesful without getting abused defensively.

"Wow, nice tie."

or...

"I'll consider the Budweiser but I'd really prefer the Corona."

or...

"Hey, no problem. You can have the last stuffed shrimp. Just consider it a gift..."

;)

The one mistake I hope Petrie does not make: Drafting for "need."

Why would I say that? Because this team needs, well, everything. They need to draft the best player available. I know you'll all groan, but if that turns out to be a 6'5" guy who can run the wing, then so be it.

As an aside, we really do have a pretty darned good idea of how this team will look next year. I think we can all agree we don't want Petrie to trade Martin, Douby or Garcia. I think we can also agree that teams won't take the contracts of KT, SAR, Bibby, Miller or Artest. Also, I suspect there'd be heartbreak if they traded Justin. So there you go; that's a total of 9 players (and it's really the 9 that get the most playing time), plus the rookie.

Just by design, I don't see how the team CAN be much different next year.

I've concluded that this is now simply bullet-biting time. It's like going to the doctor to have an ingrown toenail removed; it'll hurt a LOT for a week, but in a month, you're much better than you were before the surgery. But in the case of waiting for the clock to run out on NBA contracts, the time measurement comes in terms of full years.

Expiring contracts are worth a lot, though, right before the mid-season trade deadline. A team looking to clear cap space may be very interested in KT, just so they can have an expiring contract. Of course, that'll just be when they shouldn't trade KT... Presumably, Petrie would also find value in keeping an expiring contract.

I feel Noah benefitted from his system, and if he goes in the top 15, it'll be too high. Ironically, I expect he'll go in the top 10. When he does, I gotta say I think it'll be too high.

If Yi is still available when the Kings draft, I think that's the one gamble I'd take.

If Kenny Thomas was an expiring contract I would be ecstatic but unfortunately he has 3 years left on his deal. I'm just still pissed that we had 12 million in expiring contracts last year and we didn't use any of it and just let them go.

Im starting to wish Roy Hibbert stayed in the draft. I've been all over the place with players i like then dislike. but Hawes is not doing it for me. sadly i can see him making it to the 10th spot. Hawes will be a bummer to watch his defense is poor/avg and watching him play with Miller will be to much to watch.

I didnt care much for Hibbert but he was looking to be a much bigger force on the boards and with blks. i wouldnt mind having him back in this draft.

I've decided that taking Noah at the 10th spot might be our best option if he makes it there. his shoulder tear has teams sorta worried. and his offense needs improving. but his motor and heart are what everyone should be looking for. and his defense blks, reb, and hustle look to be top notch. this is the type of player we need someone that can cover the floor and make up for Millers terrible def. Miller being a force on the outside will open it up for Noah to get slashing dunks and layups, cause we all know that Miller can pass. I think drafting Noah could be best case. the more i here about Y the more he scares me. if hes on the board i might take a chance but i most likely would choose hustle size and defense. over a huge risk.

I actually like Hawes for the Bulls at #9. Gives them the low post scorer they really need. But, I'm guessing they probably take Yi.
