Kings Camp Buzz: Day 2

Pass the grub, please

By Joe Davidson

Mike Bibby assessed Day 2 this way: "Long." .

As in lots of hoop, too little grub and one growling stomach when the final horn went off.

"I was here at 10:45 (in the morning)," he said. "I ran out of gas probably like 2 1/2 hours ago. I need some food. I can't go this long without eating. I ate breakfast at 9:30. It's 4 o'clock (now)."

Rim wrecker

Anwar Ferguson, the 7-foot shot-blocking specialist who could hide behind a flagpole - he's that wiry at 200 pounds - threw down a dunk late in practice, and a funny thing happened. The rim didn't snap. Not enough weight.

Ferguson, a roster long shot, insists he has been trying to fatten up for years, but his body won't cooperate.

"I'll never be fat," he said.

Move of the day

Peja Stojakovic was coming down on the left wing, crossed over, went to the middle of the lane and laid it in despite tight coverage. Yes, folks, he has added to his game.

Camping with Jamal Sampson

At 6-foot-11, he has an NBA body with an endless wingspan, and his best chance of making the Kings' roster is as an active, productive rebounder. Sampson averaged 5.3 rebounds in 23 games for Charlotte last season.

Q: Back on the West Coast, does it feel like home?

A: I grew up in Cali (California), in SoCal, and lived in Cali my whole life, so I'm a Cali guy. Yeah, it's home.

Q: Any other sports for you growing up in Cali?

A: I tried baseball, but I found out that basketball was my thing. About the ninth grade, I realized this was my future.

Q: Were you any good with a baseball?

A: I was a pitcher. I had a strong arm but no control. Absolutely none.

Q: Your favorite team growing up?

A: Celtics.

Q: In the heart of Lakers country, that was allowed?

A: Hated the Lakers, loved the Celtics as a real diehard. Loved Larry Bird and Kevin McHale.

WooHoo! Peja actually added to his game. Can't wait to see that.

If you are calling making a lay up(instead of missing it) adding to your game then I guess we should all be happy :D

I think they were referring to a crossover move that got him to the basket, although finishing well is also an improvement.... :)

He made that move during the 2nd day of training camp against a bunch of rooks and camp invites. Should we be impressed?

Why not? (Although a part of me wonders if I'm the only one who read that and thought Davidson was being sarcastic...)

That's how I took it. I got a chuckle out of it.

Gotta start somewhere.

When was the last time we started training camp with 1) nobody injured and 2) competition for starting AND backup spots?

ABout #1- I hope that I did not jinx us!!!!

You can't jinx us. We already lost Jones from camp with a broken foot ...

But people really need to quit bringing up the "turnips" - I am very superstitious about tempting fate after all these years.

Wow.. I cannot even imagine Peja doing a cross over... the man wants his money..

He's had that thing for years -- think about it, on the wing, little hesitation, high dribble usually, but crosses to the right, ducks left shoulder and drives. That's been around for a long time. Actually finishing might be something new though. ;)

In any case, first day of camp against scrubbies isn't the WCF against Bowen. We'll see.

I would settle for the first round at this point in time

Yes, I used to love wincing and cringing at the thought....all the time. Now its back, so I can continue to wince and cringe at the thought :\

Yeah Peja has always had that crossover move, unfortunately for him, opponents rarely fall for it. Peja also does a series of heistation moves, and I mean a lot of them, to get his opponents off balance and get by them but most of the time to no avail. However, getting to the rim with tight coverage is a better start than no start at all. Good job Peja, you need work on that fade away shot now.
