Bavetta v. Barkley - TNT

The race is over. Have to admit it was probably the only part of the All-Star weekend I'm going to watch...

Too bad -- you should have hung on long enough to watch Mary J. Blige completely screw up U2's "One".

Where was Simon when you needed him?

That Bavetta/Barkley race will probably be my favorite part of the night. I pretty much watch for the 3-point shootout though. The rest of it is garbage.

The three point shootout...

was great Kapono was on fire and won it and than the slam dunk was good too although Dwight Howard got robbed. He didnt make it to the finals and should have he did a dunk where Jameer Nelson threw it off the backboard and Howard went up and put a sticker of himself on the top of the backboard almost and than dunked and they measured it and it was 12 feet 6inches was how hight he sticker was. Gerald Green of the celtics ended up winning.

Im suprised Dick took a dive at the end, he bloodied up his knee, but hes a tough old man and he can handle it...i was really pulling for him.

The dunk contest was wimpy this year!

Man, if only James White could have been in it. They'd never need another contest.

Dwight got ROBBED!!!

His dunk was the funniest and most creative dunk I have seen in a while. He slapped a sticker of himself on the backboard at 12'6".

I missed the race, but I'm hoping to see a replay. I did see Bavetta talking to the press. He was exceedingly gracious. Between TNT and the NBA, $50, 000 was donated to the Boys and Girls club of Las Vegas as a result of that race. And, THAT was really all that counted. :)

The dunk contest this year was probably the funniest ever with Dwight and that sticker of him smiling, and Gerald green with the cut out of Nate Robinson.

The dunk contest hasn't been decent since the year Jason Richardson and Desmond Mason battled it out with 360 between the leg dunks, but at least Gerald Green and Josh Smith (a couple years back) tried to bring some outside creativity.

Dwight's only problem is that he didn't sell that dunk before hand...if he'd have walked up to the judges first, showed them that sticker in his left hand, and just told them to watch, he would've gotten at least a 45.

As it was, when the dunk happened, it appeared to be pretty ho-hum in real time...he just jumped up real high and dunked the ball...it wasn't until the announcers realized what he had done and then showed a replay that you could tell that he had done anything different other than dunk the basketball.

Oh well. It would've been hard for him to overcome the 5'8" guy being able to dunk at all just because he's so big anyway.

The kiss Bavetta and Barkley shared after the race was just about the funniest thing i had ever seen.

oh by the way, i love the new look of the site!!!!

Dang! Dang! Dang!!

I cannot believe it. My cable went out just after they introduced Bavetta and Barkley. Barkley was trash talking about Bavetta's age and Bavetta took the high road thanking Barkley for making it possible for him to be there. The cable did not come back on until the final round of the 3 pt shootout.

At least I got to see Kapono tie the record, but damn, I wanted to see the race.

Sir Charles led the whole way (not by much). They did 3.5 lengths of the court finishing at midcourt. On that last 1/2 lap, Chuck spun around and ran it backwards. Dick DOVE for the line, but banged his knees in the process.

Chuck won, but after crossing the line fell down on his oversized posterior. They had to interview Dick first, Charles was so out of breath. Dick had a trickle of blood coming down one knee.

After they spoke their but they hugged and kissed. Really. Small peck on the lips. Ick.

Thanks for the pbp, Warhawk!

Well, at least I got to see the slam dunk. I enjoyed the originality. Dwight's dunk was funny as h***. And, it was cool of Nate to come out and take the place of his cardboard cutout. The all did a good job of entertaining the crowd.

Check out this sig I made of Dwight's sticker:

That sticker was 12'6" off the ground, and MJ gave the dunk an 8!!

FYI - The $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas was from Charles Barkley...

It was fun to watch. I couldn't believe when Bavetta dove to try and cross the finish line first.

Only part of the weekend I've watched so far and I don't think I'm missing a thing.

I heard that originally the loser was to make a donation to a charity of choice. Bavetta then said on his post race interview that TNT had decided to donate $25,000 and the NBA was donating $25,000.

The funniest moment was when Charles didn't even know which charity the money was going to and he had to stop talking and look at the check.

I don't think he was looking at the check to see who it was being donated to; I think that he was looking at the amount, based on the fact that he then proceded to make a joke about his gambling: "We're donating... (looks at check)... We're donating two hands of blackjack to the Boys and Girls Club."

And phooey on all of you: All-Star Weekend is the biggest weekend of the entire year for me. I've watched everything, even the D-League All-Star Game, and I have been very highly entertained by everything. I disagree with those who said that everything other than the race, and the slam dunk contest in particular was bad; I even liked the fact that MJ was playing the role of "Russian judge." It was a nice change of pace to see the dunk contest where they didn't actually give 50's out like Kool-Aid.

And Charles Barkley racing an old person should become an annual All-Star event.

If you missed the dunk contest you might regret it but I dunno, it was pretty entertaining. Everything else? It's pretty much just hype and you're not missing to much. So yeah you're right.

Im completely with Slim on this one...I am an All Star Weekend junkie.

I love the 3-pt shootout, the dunk contest is always fun to watch, the other events are pretty cool too.

Did anyone think the table dunk was overrated? 2 of Greene's other dunks were way better...Something Vegas-y should have popped out, or something...Just a table was boring.

And the Barkley/Bavetta race was as good as anything with Chuck in it...That guy is a top sports personality, weather you like it or not.

Dwight Howard got robbed. Even before they focused on the sticker he put on the backboard I thought his dunk was impressive, despite its lack of props/spins/flips. Seven footers just can't win anymore.

I happened to turn to it on the final round of the 3-point shooting contest...eh. Then when the Vegas magicians were introduced....I couldn't turn the channel fast enough..and won't turn it back. Blech!

I love Dwight Howard he's such a funny guy, also seeing the east practice dance off with Shaq, Dwight and Lebron was funny.

I like All Star weekend, it's a lot more entertaining than our season lol.

As for MVP today I'll go with Agent Zero ;)

Dunk contests stopped impressing me years ago... And, based on the recap I saw on ESPN late last night AND G3's comments, I'm pretty sure I would have just been screaming at my TV about Dwight Howard anyway.

I may watch the game itself but all the other stuff and surrounding hype is way too "Dime" magazine for this old lady.

:p

I think what I love is watching all these overpaid millionaires let their hair down and have a good time. Their joking, laughing, dancing, teasing, etc is pure entertainment for me.

I enjoyed watching the D League game to see what kind of talent is there. The Rookie/Soph game was a bit of a letdown only because of the point differential.

As far at the table prop dunk.........it was a good dunk only because it was setting pretty far away from the basket. It was a good way to see how far out he started his dunk. Nothing more.

The Rookie Challenge was worth watching just to see Chris Paul...

And Howard was discriminated against because he's seven feet tall; I won't speak to how challenging the dunk was, but it was certainly entertaining.

All things being equal, though, I would have rather seen the guys in the Skills competition in the dunk contest... hell, I would have rather seen the guys judging the dunk contest in the dunk contest.
