Barnes Waived.

I think we should grab him. Would be a nice addition to the bench at a cheap cost. We know what to expect from him already so its a no lose situation.

And I would think this pick up has nothing to do with Martin or Garcia. Just a good pickup for cheap and M&G would still get plenty of playing time.

it would be nice to grab him while we can..... peja and bonzi are free agents this summer.... lets have atleast one person that we know can contribute....

Pass...

He does absolutly nothing to help our offensivly-anemic second group.

Who cares if you grab an extra offensive rebound if all it parlays into is a brack from anywhere on the court.

Good player...Not for this team, though.

I would love to see Matt back in Sactown. I love his approach to the game. And I would absolutely send Martin to the D-league so he can get that hitch out of his shot. Martin needs time, lots of it, and he is only going to get that in the D-league right now. This is the last year that we can send Martin down, and we can always call him back up late in the season, a la baseball teams.

Philadelphia Daily News - The 76ers are close to adding a player. And it could be a familiar face, even though it technically could be someone who has never actually played for them.

The player in question could be 6-7 forward Matt Barnes, cut earlier this week by New York.

"We're optimistic," said Bill Neff, Barnes' agent. "We're hopeful that it gets done because, based on what they say they need, he could help."

Barnes came to the Sixers from Sacramento Feb. 23 of last season with Chris Webber and Michael Bradley in the trade for Kenny Thomas, Brian Skinner and Corliss Williamson, but never appeared in a game. He left in free agency after the season.

Bah.

Think that was Cheeks move, or Webb applying the pressure?

Philly is only 8-11, but you can see things starting to turn a bit for them. Their early season problems have largely been lack of rebounding and defense, with Webb the ONLY rebounder in there with Dalembert out. Now they have Samuel back, and all of a sudden they have 2 10reb guys up front, 2 major shotblockers, one to start, one off the bench, so 48min of defense. And now adding Barnes, which does not look like much but which could turn out to be an importnat hustling, defending, rebounding alternative to Korver that they have not had. Starting to get more balanced, and could actually become quite good if 1) Webb stays reasonably healthy; and 2) the kids make strides and grow up.

All the stuff I've been hearing is major rumblings about Webbers inability on defense. Cheeks took him out down the stretch in a close game and he got p*ssed.

Despite what Webber can or can't do on defense, I would still want him in there at the end of a close game!

Also hearing Philly fans lately they seem to be really down on Daly and his "low basketball IQ".

I just wish we had a C that could block + rebound!

That was a week or two ago (the end of the game thing). No biggee.

Webber is NOT a good defender at this point, but of course people who desperately need him to fail will overemphasize that point and ignore the fact he's more mobile this year than last and does a lot of other things out there.

Nonetheless, he is not going to be the defensive stalwart. But Dalembert can be once things settle in. As mentioned, as much as defense its been atrocious boardwork which has been killing hte Sixers. Webb has been getting 10, and nobody else more than 6, and that from their OG (they were in a similar boat to us). Overlooked last year was the fact that Hunter is a terrible reboudner, and filling in for Dalmebert he gave them nothing on the glass. But now with the big guy back, they have two 10 reb type guys to anchor them, a good rebounding OG, and really only Korver to play the sofite non-rebounder. Why I think Barnes can help coming off the bench instead of Nailon. Scrappy defensive type who works hard on the glass.

May take a few weeks, but all of the pieces are there now. Have shotblockers, rebounders, outside shooters, penetrators...still shy on the post offense and dependant on what Webb can give them. Not a title team, but a well balanced team if all goes well.

Also going to need CWebb to shoot better than the 4 for 16 he's been seemingly throwing up for the last four or five games.

I like the Barnes acquisition for the Sixers --- gives them someone with decent size and decent athleticism at the SG/SF spots to back up Iggy and Korver. I hope he gets some good run.

76ers Sign Free Agent Forward Matt Barnes
Posted on Dec. 9, 2005

Philadelphia 76ers President Billy King announced today that the team has signed free agent forward Matt Barnes. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

A 6-foot-7, 226-pound forward, Barnes returns to Philadelphia for his second stint with the team after being part of the deal that brought current forwards Michael Bradley and Chris Webber to the Sixers from Sacramento in exchange for Brian Skinner, Kenny Thomas and Corliss Williamson on Feb. 23, 2005. Barnes never appeared in a game for the Sixers, spending 24 games on the injured list with left knee tendinitis and registered four DNP-coach’s decisions in his 28 games with the team.

For his career, Barnes has averaged 4.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 17.6 minutes per game in 87 contests (23 starts). Throughout his NBA career, he has played for four different teams: Los Angeles Clippers (2003-04), Sacramento Kings (2004-05), the Sixers (2004-05) and the New York Knicks (2005-06).

Barnes began his third season in the NBA with New York, where in six games (five starts) he averaged 4.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 15.5 minutes per game. He shot 36.7 percent (11-30 FG) from the floor, had a season-best seven points, at Boston (11/2), and a season-high eight rebounds, vs. Washington (11/4). He was waived by New York on Dec. 3.

Drafted in the second round (46th pick overall) of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies, Barnes had his draft rights traded along with Nick Anderson to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Wesley Person. After being waived by Cleveland in October of 2002, he spent the remainder of the 2002-03 season in the NBA Development League playing for the Fayetteville Patriots. Barnes spent the 2003-04 season in with the Clippers, where he appeared in 38 games. He began the 2004-05 season playing in 43 games for the Kings before being traded to Philadelphia where he ended the season.

During his collegiate career, Barnes played four seasons at UCLA where he averaged 8.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in 121 contests (66 starts).

*sigh*

Oh well.

Philly starting to remind me some of the early 2000s-LB-coached teams. Like said, things just need to devlop and settle in.

Should be able to see Matt tomorrow in NJ.

I remember reading about that. In that game they didn't even let Webb know he was subbing out, and Webb turned to an assistant coach and yelled, ''Don't ever take me out without telling me.''

I remember Rick did that (Subing in for denfense) a few times without any problems.
