After the naming rights run out the Maloofs should rename that place the Turd Palace to dirve home the desperate need for a replacement.

Shouldn't PG&E or BP be looking for opportunities to rehab their image right now? Should they team up and name it the BP and PG&E Energy Titanic Arena? Maybe get Exxon to kick in as well? :p

I want it to be renamed Starbucks or Jamba Juice arena so they give away free drinks for everyone who walks in the arena every game lol

Does anybody else find it troubling that the NBA season ends in April 2011, but the 2007 naming rights extension with the Kings ends in February 2011 (ie just before March 1, 2011)?
Makes you wonder if:

(1) the Kings were willing to change the name on the building in-season (rarely happens and the Kings aren’t going to do that now); or

(2) if they weren’t willing to change mid-season, they were willing to give Arco six free weeks of naming rights; or

(3) the Kings were contemplating that March 1, 2011 could be a date that would affect a sponsors’ willingness to pay for the naming rights going forward.

At this point Larry, EVERYTHING is an unknown, and anyone that says otherwise is lying to themselves. As Phil Jackson would say, we must live in the moment...live in the now.

I'm guessing that it's going to be the Wells Fargo Arena although I know that the Arizona St. arena used to be or is still known as the Wells Fargo something.

OTOH, with naming rights being tough to find, especially in this economy and for a lame duck arena, I'm thinking it will probably just be the Sacramento Kings Arena or just Kings Arena. I wouldn't mind seeing them keep Arco and have it be free advertising for them since we're so familiar with the name.

Good point. Shoot. They can even chip in for a brand new arena downtown. That'll do wonders for their image. <wink wink>

Uh, it's been 24 years. They had extensions on the contract. Last I read it was redone in 1997 not 2007.

You're quoting Phil Jackson? Dude...
Yeah I know, but at this point it's probably the only thing we can do, these are desperate times. Just think, if we lose the Kings we wont have the Zen Master to ring cow bells at, we won't have ANYONE to ring cow bells at. :-( It's back to Minor Leaguedom. I have no problem adopting even the most annoying people's philosophies at this point to help keep my sanity until our destiny is revealed...desperate times really are cause for desperate measures.

Nope. 2007. Here is the Kings press release.

http://www.nba.com/kings/news/arco_arena_naming_rights_ext.html

And here is a quote from the March 2007 release.

"This contract extension is a confirmation of ARCO's continuing confidence in the management skill and commitment to the Sacramento community of the Maloof family," said NBA Commissioner David Stern. "The time frame provides an appropriate window within which all interested parties can work toward a new multipurpose arena for the Sacramento region. The NBA is very pleased with this outcome.""

When the deal was done, people were looking at 3-1-11 as the end of the road.

In any city the size of Sacramento, in any city with a major pro sports franchise, you'd have a host of local big corporate clients to choose from, bidding for their name to be atop the area arena or stadium. Can anybody think of one single, viable corporate sponser for cowtown? How about..... Blue Diamond Almonds Arena.

Troubling? Let's see, we all know the Kings need a new place to play and we all know they will leave Sacramento at some unknown point in time, if they can't get a new arena. So no, this doesn't trouble me any more than than the facts I already know with great clarity. I don't need to obssesively read into any and every announcement about the team or the arena to know what I already know. If the Kings get an arena deal they'll stay, if they don't, they won't. The fact of them leaving, if or when it comes to that, will make the timing unimportant to me.

And if they get a new arena, I'm sure they'll get a sponsor in place to buy the naming rights. And even if it is a small time deal, that's better than a big time deal in another city.

We all know that March 1 looms large. I'd say signs the Maloofs decided, in 2007, that 3-1-11 was a big date is something we didn't know.

We all know the score. But some of us think Kings fans have five months left until the hammer comes down. This story is a red flag for this spring. If you don't care when, that's fine. Some of us do.

I've known March 1st has been a big deal for last year and this. I actually thought they'd file last year. So this really didn't change anything in my thinking. As far as the Maloofs go on this particular issue, any halfway smart business man would be keeping their options open. In 2007 we knew and they knew they might not be long for Sacramento.

The truth is, if they miraculously get a new arena deal, they probably would want to re-bid for the naming rights to new arena. The bids would almost assuredly be higher. As long as the Kings were at Arco, it was easier to extend the old contract and wait to re-bid for a new one. So it was a smart business move to not extend the contract too far and hope to be able to get much more to name a new arena somewhere, whether its in Sacramento (not looking good) or elsewhere.

But we don't know if they were going to renew again and that little spill in the gulf that cost them a few dollars took the money away.

Would that make our arena the new NutHouse? I thought the Capitol had that title sewn-up.

That was my thought... but you beat me to it. Why not Intel Arena they are in Folsom are they not?
Why not Folsom State Prison Arena? Well, sort of kidding! They have about as many on their "campus" (approx. 1,000 staff and 3,500 inmates) as Intel in Folsom, with around 5,000 employees. Apple in Sac has a much smaller local presence.

I wonder how many people in Sac know that ARCO is owned by British Petroleum (BP) and paid $750,000 annually for quarter century to have naming rights to arena in Sacramento, even though their US headquarters is in Southern Calif and main HQ in UK.

Larry, I know you mean well, but its sort of like being told that a huge meteor is headed for earth and will hit in 4 months. All our chances of survival depend on a one lone missile hitting it and deflecting it. A one in a million shot. And your the guy that keeps reminding us every day that its coming, and that the odds suck. From a personal point of view, if you can't bring me some hope, I'd just rather hear nothing...

Look, I get your point. And believe me, because the writing is on the wall since last Friday and there isn’t much new to breakdown, I don’t really have much to say (other than a long post). At this point, it would just be kicking people when they are down and that’s never been my intent.

You what’s going on because you are educated on this issue and bright. However, the team and the local media pumped a lot of misinformation out there to keep fans interested/happily mislead. For example on his afternoon show, Grant has been talking about Cal Expo. Saying it’s viable, ect whenever the topic comes up. On Friday, he fesses up and says that he always believe it was unlikely to happen and he doesn’t think an arena is ever going to happen. Another example is Cal Expo I. After a few months, that thing was a dead duck. It really didn’t pencil out. So they invited like 14 developers to come check it out. Something like 5 showed, and the paper got a quote from one developer that basically said “Sure, it’s doable if the economy turned around … I mean, I’m not looking to do it, but I believe it’s viable.” (paraphrased to my point.) Which to me sounded a ton like, we’ll I would pay 500,000 for that house, but under the right conditions somebody could. Yet, the refrain became “developers say Cal Expo I is a viable plan” and that rattled around in the media and on this board for years, when most everybody simply knew it wasn’t true.

My posts aren’t meant to drag people like you down. But when the people selling this team say, look they might stay for a few years and see if another plan comes together, I try to use examples … like the naming rights to say “Look, you get that’s neither logical or consistent with what’s going on, right.”

I get why you view that as negative. You already know the score. So to that end, its’ not really directed at you. There are tons of fans who are either clueless or simply taking the PR as gospel. A lot of that get’s repeated here. I’m just trying to counter some of the misinformation.

Finally, there are two forums above with happy posts from fans that are either don’t know the asteroid is coming or choose to ignore it and enjoy their last days. If you really can’t handle the posts, you might want to stay up there. The news simply isn’t good down here.

If its your intent to inform clueless fans, then perhaps its you that should move to the other two fourms. Pretty soon we'll all be one unhappy, happy family. Look, I know your just trying to imform. But I don't think its necesary to show us every nail before you nail it into the coffin. But then thats just me.

Larry, I don't think the arena naming deal was a great example. It could just as easily been just as I stated above as an alternative view. Neither you nor I know exactly why they did a two-year extension. It certainly wasn't proof they were already planning their move for sure. A two year extension makes just as much sense if they thought they might get a new arena in a couple of years. As to talking down to people who choose to ignore the loss coming and enjoy the team for now, they may be the smartest of all.

If it was announced that an asteroid big enough to wipe out all life on earth would hit for sure in two months, what would you do? I think you'd be the guy running around making sure everybody is reminded that we're all doomed to die, its the end of the world, its Armageddon. On the other hand, some people would rather spend their time enjoying all that's good in life, especially being with their loved ones until the end.

The truth is, either the Kings will stay somehow or they won't. I have no more control over the Kings leaving than I would have over that deadly asteroid. So while I realize how close that end may be, I don't need the doomsday person blaring all the time. I'm going to spend whatever amount of time I have with the Kings in Sacramento, enjoying them as much as I can and doing so with my fellow Sacramento Kings-loving fans.

Anyway, that asteroid might actually miraculously miss the earth, defying all scientific projections. And life would be all the sweeter.
