Arbitron Ratings for Media Markets

I have always felt like this is important information for Kings fans to know, especially seeing as how we always cry about being a small market team:

http://www.arbitron.com/downloads/redbook_fa08.pdf

Listed in accordance to Arbitron's Market Survey Schedule and Population Rankings:

#1 New York Knicks
#1 (Canada) Toronto Raptors. 1/3 of the population of Canada (11.5 Million people) lives w/in 200km of Toronto.

#2 LA Clippers
#2 LA Lakers
#3 Chicago Bulls
#4 Golden State Warriors
#5 Dallas Mavericks
#6 Houston Rockets
#7 Atlanta Hawks
#8 Philadelphia Sixers
#9 Washington Wizards
#10 Boston Celtics
#11 Detroit Pistons
#12 Miami Heat
#15 Phoenix Suns
#16 Minnesota Timberwolves
#19 New Jersey Nets
#21 Denver Nuggets
#23 Portland Trail Blazers
#25 Charlotte Bobcats
#27 Sacramento Kings
#29 Cleveland Cavaliers
#30 Utah Jazz
#31 San Antonio Spurs
#34 Orlando Magic
#37 Milwaukee Bucks
#40 Indiana Pacers
#48 Oklahoma City Thunder
#49 Memphis Grizzlies
#55 New Orleans Hornets

The Kings are 21st as far as market size in the NBA. They are a top 30 market in the country, so (in theory) if there are only 30 teams Sacramento should have one. Las Vegas is #33, a smaller market than Sacramento, so it would be a fool move to run down there, especially considering that the citizens there just don't seem to care.

Of the 9 teams below us the following six have superstar talent: OKC, NO, Orlando, Cleveland, San Antonio, and Utah. However, ALL of those superstars were acquired through the draft.

I have just been summoned, professional pontificators feel free to extrapolate!

why is New Jersey so low?

i am surprised Philly is that high....

why on Philly? Place is huge and has been forever -- hell, its been Top 10 since 1776.

on Nets all I can guess is maybe they are calling them Newark? And giving Knicks market rights on Eastern Jersey without Nets getting the same?

The Nets as represented in the numbered list above were the only team that required some subjectivity on my part. The only info I could muster placed NJ cities extremely low (about 120), but I upped the rating because of other high ranking cities in the proximity. That was the only team I didn't have an actual figure for.

I lived in Philadelphia a little bit and IMO it is a huge market. It is like a baby New York.

I am surprised that Dallas is rated higher than Houston. Again, worked (internship) a little bit in Houston and IMO it is a bigger and better market, and so-called corporate support is the second-best in the US.

Their arena is like 10 miles from downtown Manhattan. I think it's safe to lump them in with New York City.

New Jersey has always been New Yorks ugly sister, but I can't imagine them being that low. In truth, all those cities, Washington, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, etc. are all very close together as opposed to LA and San Francisco. So in that sense, they're all in the same market. I suspose that if you change the name from New Jersey to Newark it could drop you down the list.

They'll also be in Brooklyn soon enough.

And their TV territory is the same as NYC from what I recall (it has been almost a decade since I've been out there).

I just thought that more southern cities had overtaken philly... i am even MORE surprised that Detroit is still as high as it is....

Dallas is Dallas and Ft. Worth. If you add them together, it becomes as large as Houston and corporate support in dallas is much better than Houston. Houston has always had the reputation of being the more blue-collar city of the two.

Odd to think we are that low actually. But for the NBA market, we bump up against the Bay Area. The Warriors get to grab 3 major size markets in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and everything around. It's huge.

We get Sac and basically nothing else except Stockton... whoohooo.

Boston, instead, gets to grab all of New England. Phoenix gets all of Arizona.

And parts of the Bay Area market are less than 100 miles from Sac. We get robbed.

Phoenix also gets Vegas, no?

Vegas is LA territory for the most part. Lakers garbage everywhere in the burbs from what I remember (mainly 99-02 when I did frequent business there). Lots of Raiders fans too.

No. This is not a list of NBA TV markets. It's a list of Arbitron TV markets. Las Vegas has it's own TV market. If you look for it, you'll see where it falls.

The Arbitron put come cities together to form a market ... but Las Vegas has it's own market.

I meant Vegas gets the Suns for regional broadcasts. Wasn't talking about everything Phoenix.
