American Idol - And the weeks go on (merged)

Everyone has there own tastes, especially in music and as you said its like art. :)

This should finally be a good week. Good theme, we can finally hear what they sound like singing todays music.

IMO this is one of the worst top 5 AI has had. Like all the other seasons I suspect we will only hear from maybe 2 or 3 of them and that is tops.

Actually if you look back only 3 of them have been able to break into mainstream music... Kelly, Carrie and Josh. I haven't really heard much noise from any of the other past AI'ers. Of course as time goes by that could change as they are all young artists.

Fantasia has a couple of CDs that have done well, Clay Akins has done VERY well, and several others have ventured into related fields. One of the previous contestants was on OC the other night, I believe.

While there may not be one stand-out heads above the rest winner in this group, I honestly believe they are more talented en masse than any of the other top 5.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they can outsing Carrie Underwood, who is really soaring in the country field, but they have enough talent to make a comfortable living IMHO. I really loved the Ford commercial last week. The remaining hopefuls have a nice sound together, nothing jarring just good solid voices. It was very well orchestrated.

I didn't really watch the 2nd AI as I have the others ... so I can't comment about the talent in that season.

However .... the remaining AI's - in comparison to the current TOP 5 ... I would have to say I like this season's Finalist the best.

We actually have a range of versatility and some more versatile then the next.

I'm partial to all their different styles and I do have my favorite(s).

As much as I have picked on Chris down the stretch, in the beginning I had him picked to make the TOP 10. So my comments about him aren't really negative, it's when comparisons are made to the others that I think he's not as strong - IMO. I'm glad to see that he's made it this far.

My rankings are:

1T - Katharine and Elliot
3 - Paris
4 - Taylor
5 - Chris

Those are some powerful singers ....

Maybe it’s just me then because there hasn't been one performance this year that has really made the hair stand on my arms. Well the first few weeks Chris came close, Walk the Line was great.

Fantasia - I will agree with you there VF. Almost every week she would give me the chills. I think she had one of the best voices on AI.

Like you said FAL, this is a pretty diverse group and possibly the most diverse yet. This week is a big week for me; I think I am putting a lot on the fact that this is a show to produce the next POP star. From all the Idols, Kelly is the only one that has actually made it as a pop star. It's a technicality that bothers me because I don't watch Nashville Star to see the winner become a rap artist.

Of course one could argue and I would entertain the fact that the word “American” is meant to be diverse which covers all walks of life, sounds and music in America. But the original plan was to find the next pop star.

Did anyone see Lisa Tucker on the OC this week? She made a brief appearence.

Well, actually - I don't care for Fantasia. ;) I liked the girl whose aunt lived in Sacramento that season. I can't remember her name but it was a real shock when she was voted off...

As far as Lisa Tucker goes, I mentioned her appearance on OC. I just couldn't remember her name.

The show may have originally been about the next POP star but it's pretty clear the American public has morphed it into something MUCH more entertaining. The POP music genre shifts and changes, adding more and more diversity. How would you counter that? By eliminating talented people from the auditions because three judges whose judgment isn't always the best anyway don't think the hopeful is POP enough? And, to go further, what exactly defines a POP artist?

Latoya London, and yes her uncle calls 1140 all of the time and he is a crack up:D .

Agree about Paris definitely. The problem is, she's hard to market. She's got a very powerful, mature voice in a very small package. Her voice and appearance don't match, which makes it hard on the publicity and marketing part of being a pop star. I think that's unfortunately going to be a killer for her. :(

Tonight should be fun. At least we don't have to suffer anymore though horrible voices. We have 5 strong vocal styles as mentioned above.

Unfortunately I think Chris will win. I have said from the beginning I believe he is nothing special. He sounds like every other rock guy out there, but he is obviously the favorite to win.

Katharine-Great voice. Perfect for Broadway. I don't see her as pop in any way shape or form. It is not her comfort zone. She is old school classical, broadway, jazz.

Taylor-Gimmick is getting old for me. He hasn't shined lately. I don't see him winning.

Paris-Too young. Nice voice for her age. But to me nothing special. Aslo, she does not need this competition. She will make it with or without this show. Grandma and good voice.

Elliott-My favorite. Vocally the best. No competition vocally. Could learn to command the stage more but getting better. He is by far the most talented one up on that stage. Plus, no airs about him at all. He is real. I like him lots. Should win, but won't.

I did.

Elliot - mediocre first performance, nothing special second
Paris - nothing special first performance, very good second
Chris - decent first performance, nothing great second (I'm tired of Simon making excuses for Chris)
Kat - nothing special first performance, very good second
Taylor - ok first performance for a funky white boy, I loved the second performance (he managed to squezee a Beatles song as a current Billboard hit :) )

my rating:
1. Taylor
2. Kat
3. Chris
4. Elliott
5. Paris

I'm a Chris fan, so I loved his first song. His voice gave out on him during the second song, probably because he seemed to be screaming most of it.

Taylor's second song was amazing. The first song was ok...he had lots of energy, but didn't really show off his voice much.

Kat's second song was great too. I loved the whole set up with the drummers next to her and her sitting on the floor barefoot. :) Very dramatic. Her first song wasn't all that good.

Paris...there is just something about how she sings sometimes that bugs me. It can be so disjointed. Don't get me wrong, I love her voice, especially when she sings old jazzy/bluesy songs, but I think she needs to learn how to breath so she doesn't have to stop in the middle of a note to take a breath.

Elliot was ok. Nothing great in either song.

Is it just me or does it seem like the judges (particularly Randy and Simon) are getting weary of this group. Paula I could care less what she has to say.

To me, it seems like this group as a whole is getting weaker as the competion goes on. Unlike past groups (especially the Ruben/Clay group) who seem to get better as the weeks progress this group seems to be falling victim to attrition.

Katharine - Against All Odds, bad first song. Easily the worst performance of the night, OK second. I wish she would have gotten up off of the floor at least once.

Paris - OK first song, bad song choice. You mean to tell me out of all the songs from 1988 that Prince's Kiss is the best you can choose? Great Second song, great song choice in singing Mary J. Very consistant but I am resigned that she will be going home tonight.

Chris - First and second song both sound the same, 'nough said.

Elliott - Good first (On Broadway), not so good second, pretty low energy.

Taylor - OK first, got back to the jumping around in "White Boy" I thought he cheated in the second Beatles cover.

Bottom Three - Paris, Taylor, Elliott

Eliminated Tonight - Paris.

At this point in the competition it is pretty predictable on how the voting will be going.

Cheated might be a wrong word. He found a loophole and he exploited it. He had every right to do it considering how AI producers have "cheated" him last week.

PIP = Picture in Picture

My ratings for last night:

#1 - Katharine
#2 - Paris
#3T - Taylor
#3T - Elliott
#5 - Chris

My rankings after last night:

#1 Katharine
#2T - Elliott
#2T - Paris
#4 - Chris
#5 - Taylor

Elliott – ::sigh:: I’m worried for him tonight. I liked his performance for the first song but that’s just me liking him. I remembered thinking gosh I wish Benson had recorded “This Masquerade” that year so Elliott could have chosen that. For an uptempo song it did nothing for him in terms of the competition. Michael Buble for the 2nd song. I had the SAME forehead slapping moment that Simon did about the ironic lyrical message of that song being realllllllly inappropriate. Although I love “Home” I didn’t like Elliott’s rendition of it because I thought he forced a lot (if not more) of Buble’s breathy phrasing in it when he didn’t need to and it just seemed fake. I know “So Sick” is so played-out right now, but that might have been something for to go uptempo with and get him moving and showcase that voice.

Paris – I liked (not loved) the first choice. The minute I heard the opening strains I got the pang in the stomach feeling “geezus, I’m old if this song was recorded the year she was born.” I could see her working that in a concert. I agree, fabulous 2nd song choice and performance of it. It started kinda scary but she nailed it otherwise. I’m thinking that she or Elliott goes home just because Katharine pulled a good performance out for song #2.

Taylor – The gimmicky Taylor returned for me last night. I like it when he goes uptempo, but there was something about all the ancillary stuff during last night’s Funky White Boy that I just couldn’t get into. When I heard he was doing a Beatle’s 2nd song I was trying to understand what chart they were on, but I’ll be darned if he didn’t nail the heck out of one of my favorite Beatles standards. I still am bitter after he screwed up what should have been an equally stunning performance of “Just Once”

Chris – I loved his first choice, I’m still not sure I know what song that was although it sounded familiar. I thought he won the competition last night after that performance because I figured there was no way he could possible screw whatever he sung the 2nd time around. Spoke too soon tho. Because I couldn’t get into it because it was so forced – I skipped through it midway to get to the judges’ comments afterwards. I didn’t realize he had yelled so much that his voice started to give out. I think the first part of the song where he started wailing with loudness I said “blech” and pressed the FF button. He left the door open for Taylor (although I wish I had a good feeling about Elliott getting a reprieve).

Katharine - ::sigh:: I didn’t watch the part of the episode last week where they took back their criticism of her “I Have Nothing” performance. I did watch her performance again and thought it wasn’t horrible but it still was bad and the octave she sang it in was too low for her voice. Probably didn’t help that I also watched The Bodyguard last weekend and watched Houston perform it. Same problem with “Against All Odds” I thought she nailed the Tunstall song – she got one she could handle in her range, although it was a little gimmicky for me – something I could have seen Pickler doing .

Bottom Three - Paris, Taylor, Elliott

Eliminated Tonight – Elliott or Paris. You could flip a coin between these two I think not go wrong. Pulling out the Mary J Blige card may have worked to keep Paris around at least another week but she’s been vulnerable for a while. Will people even remember the Donny Hathaway performance after two lackluster songs last night?

You and I are on the same page. I thought he was going to sing that song too. It just sounds like something he would do.

I am just tired of hearing these singers sing songs that are a key too low. I sing praise and worship in church, and there is nothing harder than singing a song too low. I would rather sing a little higher and take a chance, than to sing too low and sound like a frog:eek: .

Those outside of Sacramento with no NBA TV did.

There's not much to report because all five gave us exactly what we expected. There ain't gonna be much surprise from here on out.

Katharine looked sizzling and sounded terrific, Chris screamed out at the top of his lungs, Elliott gave us a voice lesson, Paris blared out large notes out of her small frame, and Taylor showed both his crazy dance side and his sensitive crooning side.

Rankings:

1. Katharine
2. Elliott
3. Taylor
4t. Chris
4t. Paris

I hate this so much, because I really am ranking based on who I want to see on "Idol", and not who's the most talented singer. Paris is an absolutely amazing singer. Amazing. Better than Chris, and I would say better than Taylor. It's just that she doesn't have the looks or the fan base or the entertainment value to take her to the next round. But I would prefer Taylor to Paris simply because he's more fun to watch, and he gets me out of my seat.

These are my rankings solely based on voice:

1t. Katharine
1t. Elliott
2. Paris
3. Taylor
4. Chris

She sounded terrific singing "Against All Odds"? I.......don't think so, objectivly speaking. And if I can interject, that was her worst performance of the whole competition. She is better than that.

I think she sounded very good. She always sounds very good to me. It wasn't the best performance for her, but she's in her own stratosphere compared to the other female vocalists. She's definitely the one that consistently wows me from week to week.

they played a clip on the radio today of a couple of them..

whomever sang the prince song...not a good choice for her

the guy who sang desperado? or something along those lines nailed it..

Time for MY rankings today!

1. katherine - her singing is SUPERB
2. Chris- like his style
3. Taylor - love his entusiasm
4. Elliot - doesnt have something special
5. paris - didnt do good

I think had she been a couple of years older she might have ended up winning this thing, but there's no doubt in my mind that Paris does indeed have a bright future ahead of her.

My power rankings for the final four:

1. Chris
2. Katharine
3. Elliott
4. Taylor

I think Taylor has finally worn out his welcome and will be, barring a miracle next time, the next to go.

What will the theme be for next week?
