American Idol - And the weeks go on (merged)

#91
Those are some pretty RIGHT-ON breakdowns for THE WEEK OF COUNTRY ...

I admit, I'm like Simon when it comes to Country - a bit on the boring side for me (but, our band plays it cuz people ask for it)

With that said ... here's my take on last night:

Didn't do it for me: Bucky & Taylor
Okay: Mandisa, Paris & Ace
Interesting: Katherine & Elliott
Good Job: Chris & Kellie

I too am not a Country Music affecianado. But I would never discriminate against it. I enjoy music period! I thought last night was average at best. I broke down the performances as GOOD, AVERAGE, MEDIOCRE

GOOD
Pickler - She shocked me, even though she was in her element. Just her vocals alone were very good.

Paris - Girl can sing anything. It was the one song I was fairly familar with. Safe but solid. You can't ask for more when you are out of your element.

Kathrine - She has attitude that does not match her voice, but she can sing. "Bringing Out the Elvis in Me" had attitude and she sang it well.

AVERAGE
Chris - Kind of boring to me. I know that he has been asked to do more than rock out, but he was very mummy like singing that song. But his vocals were good, which made for an average performance.

Mandisa - For the second week in a row, Mandisa had a subpar performance. And as much as I like her and hope that she continues, her margin for error is much thinner than the rest of the contestants. She is not your prototypical Idol profile. Her standard is much higher and for the last two weeks, she has not met it. Unfortunately my gut feeling says she will pay for it tonight.

Elliott - He just continues to sail along. Out of all the contestants he seemed way out of his comfort zone, but he pulled it off.

MEDIOCRE
Taylor - OK i guess. But as I said on last week, he seems to have lost a little of that enthusiasm he brought into the competition. He may have hit a wall or something. But his vocals were very low key in what seemed like a high energy song.

Bucky - When Bucky sings I can never understand what the heck he is saying. His pronunciation is straight up brutal, and last night was the worst.

Ace -

Bottom Three: Bucky, Ace and Mandisa

Predicted Elimination - Mandisa :( . Unfortunately in my gut America is going to make her pay for the last two weeks. She deserves to stay.

WORD ON THE STREET - American Idol is in negotiation with a music icon superstar for him to have a week of coaching of his catalogue of songs and a rare performance on Wednesday night. HINT: My name is his signature, and he is a huge Minnesota Timberwolves fan. :D

I know who it is ... but, I'll give a hint as well:

Professionally - I think he's on his 2nd name

.... BTW - this WORD ON THE STREET was aired on one of those ENTERTAINMENT SHOWS .... NBC

I forgot to post my prediction for WHO IS NOT GOING TO SEE NEXT WEEK ON AmId ...

Bottom 3 = Bucky, Ace and Katherine (almost a repeat from last week) .... Katherine doesn't deserve to be here, but she's just not getting the vote count

Gone ... Ace

Well gee don't give any good hints :) That would be cool or a disaster, he does some pretty complex stuff and has a very unique voice. Maybe Elliot and Ace would fair pretty well with his songs.

Like VF I am a country type of guy and this week overall was almost as bad as last week. When you think it cannot get anyworse it does. They absolutely destroyed some great songs. And just 2 years ago Josh Gracin did one of the best renditions of Thunder Rolls, but lets not enjoy the past lets dwell on the now...

My ranks in order based on tonights performance

1. Chris - Best of the night for me, actually he did so well and his voice was so under control. Yes a safe song but when you think of Chris you don't think of a voice with tons of range. He performed within himself and did a great job.

2. Katherine - I honestly don't know if I heard her differently then everyone else... maybe I need to replay it, everyone seems less impressed as I was. I was on my day off and had a drink or 2 after a horrible kings performance which explains it all. But hey you are supposed to drink and listen to country, it's the only way!

3. Kellie - I actually wasn't super impressed by her. Reba is the queen and nobody can touch how she puts the emotion into her songs. Kellie did a good job but I really like when Reba goes into that crackley voice in the song. Good enough for 3 because everyone else sucked. But overall I didn't like it. (oh and the one Nashville Star I watched I believe one of them performed Fancy, and IMO was way better then Kellie)

4/5/6 This is a tie for me... Paris/Ace/Elliot. I cannot give props to Ace because I don't like him and that just makes me hate his music. I thought Elliot would be a lot better and Paris did okay.

7/8/9 - Taylor, Bucky, Mandisa in no order - absolutely horrible and every word Simon uses to describe a bad performance.

Those are my rankings but my bottom 3 prediction is:

Mandisa, Paris and Bucky.

Mandisa goes home tonight, she was really really bad.

Wow. What an off night. There were a few standouts for me, but not much.

Hated-Kelly-Her voice just grates on my nerves. You can sell a song and you can over sell. She over sold. I am just done with her. And she apologised AGAIN. 3 weeks in a row.

Taylor-I really am upset to say I hated it but I did. What a horrible night for him.

Mandissa-Just wasn't her night. Off the entire song. Country is not for her.

Liked--Katharine-Thought she as great. She knows how to sell a song. What a voice.

Elliott-I think this man is just a fantastic singer. He needs to be more comfortable on stage and less stiff, but vocally I think he is fabulous.

Chris-Thought he was awesome tonight. Wish he would do more singing and less screaming in the weeks to come.

So/So--Ace-Yes, he is dreamy and delicious, but the song and his voice did nothing for me last night. Wouldn't be surprised if he went home tonight.

Paris-Ok. Whatever. Sang it ok. Nothing special at all.

Bucky-Yeah so what. Again, ok, nothing special.

Bottom 3-Ace, Mandissa, Bucky-Ace goes home.

Not defending Taylor's bad performance, but the word is out that he has been sick and with a fever. They even moved Elliott out (he was his roommate) so they can quarantine Taylor.

This week was painful. I'll fess up to not being a country music fan, less officianado. Elliott stood out for me, this also was the first time in a couple of weeks Chris has gotten back into my good graces. Kellie Pickler kept herself around another few weeks.

I thought Ace was horrible at worse, mediocre at best. I was in absolute agreement that until he hit that falsetto at the end of the song I was bored stupid by his performance. Mandissa and Katherine were again bleh to me. They'll hang around. Bucky, what to say what to say...I'm stunned that the judges felt he nailed that performance. He should be sent packing if for no other reason he didn't blast the competition away with getting a chance to perform in his comfort zone genre. I mean damn, if you have the Kenny Rogers piece showing him being instructed to overenunciate each word of teh song so people know what the heck it is the song is about, AND he comes out and mumbles his way through it ANYWAY? Country Music week should not give him a pass for a mediocre performance. Tay

My bottom 3, Ace, Bucky and Taylor (Paris maybe replacing somebody who received some undeserved carryover points from previous weeks' performances). Ace goes home, he didn't do enough to stay out of the bottom 3 and defintely not enough to get more votes than somebody else who had never been there.

WOW. I can't believe who left. That was a SCHOKER today and well, this person should have not gone at all today.

I am just gonna say the bottom 3 was a shocker and the person was DEFINATLY a shocker.

Its ok, you can say the name now. Mandisa was voted off tonight, which came as a surprise. I thought there should have been at least 3 people that should have been voted off before her.

Wow. Purple Reign pretty much hit the nail on the head:

Mandisa - For the second week in a row, Mandisa had a subpar performance. And as much as I like her and hope that she continues, her margin for error is much thinner than the rest of the contestants. She is not your prototypical Idol profile. Her standard is much higher and for the last two weeks, she has not met it. Unfortunately my gut feeling says she will pay for it tonight.
I was a little surprised Mandisa went, but not disappointed. I confess to never being quite as enamored of her as some of the rest of you.

I'm actually a little afraid to turn in for next week's competition. I cannot imagine most of those remaining being able to do justice to anything Queen did. It could get really ugly out there...

Bottom 3 = Mandisa, Elliott and Paris

Yeah, I was surprised Mandisa went .... but, before the show and having read the posts here .... when the announcement was made who the bottom 3 were - I KNEW

It was interesting, when they were down to the 2 groups of the bottom 3, Ace, Bucky and Katherine in the other group, I thought for sure I HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD with my prediction of the bottom 3, then Ryan says they were all safe.

BTW - Taylor, Kellie and Chris were in the other group.

I liked Mandisa - it was obvious country was not her style, same with Paris ....

I'm not gonna get started, but it all goes back to the way the voting is handled.

IMO - there are finalists less deserving of going on, but are ... because they got the votes

So, Queen next week .... should be interesting :D

What makes this so ironic is that according to some reports, Mandisa sang some backup for Shania Twain and Faith Hill.

Last night proved that this competition is 75 percent popularity and 25 percent talent. I hate to make this a social issue, but Mandisa's exit had little to do with talent and much to do with profile. Not as much racial profile but more physical profile. I have said this from day one, that there was no way America was going to make an overweight woman (whether she was black, white or anything else) "The" American Idol unless her talent was so overwhelming that you were forced to select her. Please do not take me wrong.

Ruben Studdard was voted American Idol because you could not ignore his gifts that was consistant every single week. Even on country night Ruben sang Sweet Home Alabama an was awesome. Mandisa was becoming inconsistant and she paid for it. Her margin for error was very thin. She had to be twice or maybe three times better than the rest just in order to survive. Now if her profile was more in tune to what America considers an American idol, she would have gotten a pass for last week and this week. She did not get a pass, she is gone. Here is my power ranking for the remaining contestants:

1. Elliott
2. Paris
3. Kathrine
4. Taylor
5. Chris
6. Pickler
7. Ace
8. Bucky (he has to go, should have been gone last night  )

I'm hoping we can keep this thread light-hearted and NOT resort to social commentary.

Having said that, I'm sorry Purple Reign but I still disagree about Mandisa's talents. Yes, some of you really liked her but I - who have loved music all my life (and that's a long time) - didn't care for her. You made a very telling comment - Mandisa was inconsistant in the past two weeks and she paid for it.

Here's my power ranking for the remaining hopefuls:

1. Chris
2. Elliott
3. Katherine
4. Kellie
5. Taylor
6. Ace
7. Paris
8. Bucky

True, Pickler's screwed up numerous times and has stayed up there just fine. But it doesn't matter... Mandisa's made a name for herself, and we'll be hearing more of her in the future, I predict.

No I am cool with that. that is the last you will hear from me in regards to social commentary. Mandisa is a very good singer. Better than what she has shown over the past two weeks.

I don't want to go were PR did because I could ramble on for a while, I think there are all sorts of factors involved, including the ole conspiracy. :D

My Power Rankings (I like that VF)

1. Chris
2. Kathrine
3. Elliot
4. Taylor
5. Pickler
6. Paris
7. Ace
8. Bucky

Queen makes it tough but this will/should be Bucky's last week. I am not even looking forward to this week as I think they will completely butcher Queen's songs.

Now that's clever ...

I especially like the songs you've assigned to: Taylor, Ace & Bucky :D
