Cousins, an emotionally and mentally weak player, was drafted into a weak organization. Weak coach, weak organization, relatively weak veteran influences. Now we want - we need -a strong coach and organization to mold Cousins. How realistic is that? Is Phil or Jerry going to be joining us anytime soon? And, another question: Was it realistic to think that the organization was strong enough to mold Cousins when he was drafted? To have a good strategy for anything, you have to make an assessment of what is, appraising the pros and the cons, the advantages and disadvantages, a lay of the land as it were. And when Cousins was drafted that land was sterile. A history of weak coaches. A coaching carousel. Veterans that didn't have the power to form a winning culture. No winning. So was it good strategy to bring in a guy like Cousins into that minefield? Or is a better strategy to look for the players that are of strong mind, who are not severely immature, who can develop even without a strong organization (e.g. Jason Thompson)? I think the latter approach deals with reality, whereas the former has a much higher risk of failure because it is based upon fulfilling many needs that for numerous reasons cannot be met.
