80s movie bracket - Miami Vice Region voting due now

Hey all....

Just thought I'd share something to pass the time.

In honor of March Madness, we have unveiled the latest faux bracket...the 80's movie bracket.

The response has been very passionate, and I wanted to pass it along. Feel free to vote, but the fun comes from discussing amongst yourselves.

80's Movie Tournament

Hey all, welcome to our 2nd annual bracket madness at the CDS. This year's subject was a special one, and very close to my heart. Most all of us have a special relationship with many 80's movies...

Because of the passion regarding this subject, many will question the seeding and/or inclusion of some films. We stayed by a general principle that the movie needs to have an 80's STYLE and FEEL to it...We also tossed ET, most Sci-Fi in general, and tried to stay away from sports pieces as we will have a sports movie bracket in the future.

The Outsiders and Stand by Me got exceptions because of the overwhelmingly 80'sness of the casts. Although Back 2 the Future was set primarily in the 50's, MJ Fox had a Huey Lewis and the News "Sports" poster on his bedroom wall, and that makes it automatically 80's.

If you look hard enough, you will find holes in the rules. We stayed away from sports pieces, but included Wildcats. We stayed away from Sci-Fi, but included SpaceBalls. It happens. If you don't like it, make your own bracket. Sometimes, you just gotta go with your gut.

PS: I tried to figure out a way to do this without making it seem like I am trying to draw traffic, so if there is a way just to post it here, feel free to copy and pop it up somehow. So for lack of a better idea, if you do visit the site for the brackets, stop immediately after, and return to kingsfans.com :)

thanks

Any bracket that would make me have to ultimately choose between Wall Street and Breakfast Club is evil.... Did the BCS computers spit this region's seedings out? ;)

haha. i agree. it was a long and winding road, figuring these out. even i don't agree with much of the seeding committee, but i think we got most of them in.

it is fairly torturous.

NOTE: I added part of Dave's intro to explain some of the seedlings. I think this can be a lot of fun and it's certainly something to talk about for our movie buff members.

I'm going to make my bracket selections (working backwards from what I truly think is the strongest movie of that decade) and figure out a way to post the results.

I believe I found a way to post the bracket.

Let's see if this works.

well...mostly readable. vf- do i need to remove the logos?

Thanks, Proph!!! For some reason, I couldn't remember how to do that. Seeing it now, of course, brings it back to mind. Glad you took the time.

----------------------------------

I'd forgotten just how many movies I really loved from the 80s. I may have to make a trip down to my local video store. ;)

Ooh, some tough first round matchups there -- Trading Places v. Back to School or coming to America vs. Back to the Future for instance. And then some not so tough. I am thinking #1/#16 seeds in Naked Gun vs. Brewster's Millions or Caddyshack vs. Can't Buy Me Love (which I am not sure I even remember other than the name).

I think its important as a ground rule to know if this is supposed to be favorite movie, or greatest epitome of an 80s movie?

For those who may not have it handy, here's the bracket matchups for round 1:

1/16, 8/9, 5/12, 4/13, 6/11, 3/14, 7/10, 2/15. Just read top to bottom in each region...

Well that does convert Ferris from a dangerous darkhorse into a Final Four favorite, but its also blatantly disresptful to Blues Brothers (although that was practically a 70s movie) and converts Goonies and Planes Trains and Aurtombiles to dubious #2 seeds.

Now here's my frightening thought of the day -- for a number of baord members an 80's movie poll is a lot like a 60's movie poll would have been for me. I was born after the 60's, so it was always some strange time full of bad clothes and strange grainy technicolor movies. For our younger board members (and next year's college freshmen) the 80's will be the same -- they were born after the decade, adn its a bizarre anachronism.

I don't know how his "seeding committee" came up with the various rankings, but I just used the standard bracket assignments for single-elimination tournaments.

yes, for some reason, we couldnt include the seeding numbers in the PDF, but VF has it dead on.

The #1 seeds: Caddyshack, Ferris, Fast Times, Breakfast Club

I would love to say that the voting should be based on what movie represented the "80s" the most, but then everyone's bracket would be way off.

Considering the way most people handle this, I have narrowed it down to this:

If movie A is playing movie B, you need to decide what you would do in the following situation. If you could only watch one of those movies for the rest of your life, what would it be? So yes, it boils down to a popularity contest.

Personally (and I didnt allow myself to do the seeding) I think there are a few unfair first round matchups, but none tougher than Karate Kid vs Fletch.

Have fun.

You do realize that this means that your #2 seed Goonies is going to receive exactly zero votes, as in EVER, right? :p

But cool. A popularity contest -- easy standard. Eliminates the calcualtions. Even owned a few of these movies at one time in my life. Actually still own a couple. So let's see...

Ohhh Brick, me no think so. Surprisingly, Goonies has a strong undercurrent of support, thus making them a darkhorse.

You've got:

Samwise from LOTR

Chunk

and the BABY RUTH man himself, John Matuszak as "Sloth"

No one puts Goonies in a corner. (wait, that's baby from dirty dancing)

Dave - a little bird told me folks have until 9:30 tonight to vote for their first round picks in the Mullet region. What are the other deadlines?

good call.

voting is open till tonight at 9:30, when the show starts. I will then close the "mullet" region, and move to the bottom right of the bracket, the "parachute pants" region.

I am basically going to try and time this to have the championship the same day as the NCAA championship.

I will close the voting for the Parachute Pants region when the show starts Monday, and open the next region (top right)...rinse lather repeat each night.

I will also announce the Mullet region results tonight, simultaneous with the opening of the next round of voting....

Okay, here are my picks for the Mullet region:

Mullet region:

1. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
8. Crocodile Dundee

12. Diner
4. Risky Business

6. Wargames
3. Lost Boys

10. Back to the Future
2. Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Hmmm...Mullet region, first round:

Ferris v. Romancing the Stone -- Ferris all the way. I mean come on, that boy is a contender. And I never understood the fasicnation with Kathleen Turner and the "sex appeal" of her having a voice like a man anyway.

Police Academy v. Crocodile Dundee -- has to be the Crocodile man, if for nothing else than not blighting the planet with nearly so many insipid sequels. Besides, Crocodile Dundee is oen of my mom's favorite movies. Only hesitation is not remembering whether Police Academy was the first of the 2147 roles in which Km Cattrall took off her clothes or not. Crocodile did have the nifty gratuitous thong bathing/being eaten by a crocodile scene, but Kim was a hottie back in the day.

Real Genius v. Diner -- I have always thought Real Genius was somewhat overrated, but what the hell was Diner? Has to be Genius.

Risky Business v. Teen Wolf -- are you kidding? Even without being the hugest Risky Business fan (or nutjob fan), do you remember what Rebecca De Mornay looked like on that staircase? come on now. If I'm having to watch one of these every day for the rest of my life, really now. Risky Business all the way.

Wargames v. Big Trouble in Little China -- my brother used to love Big Trouble in Little China, but I was never as huge a fan. Goofy but... And Wargames was one of the first movies (maybe even the first) that I was able to go to alone with jsut friends and no parents. Besides, back when I was 11, and she was supposed to be 13 or whatever in that movie, I thought Ally Sheedy was damn cute. So Wargames.

Lost Boys v. Roadhouse -- likely a battle of the sexes here, but Roadhouse might deserve to win this whole tourney for just completely 100% utterly ridiculous over the top hilarity. Endlessly entertaining in a laugh at it rather than with it way. Oh yes, and with lts of macho fights and evena striptease scene too. Goos stuff. Roadhouse all the way.

Coming to America v. Back to the Future -- I am shocked/surpsied to find this a middle seed matchup. Even thought I never particularly liked Back to the Future or its sequels (despite liking Michale J. Fox back on whatever that sitcome was), it might be the most famous 80s movie of them all. And I am still going to vote against it because I actually did like Coming to America. Legitimately funny movie even though I am sure it will lose this matchup.

Plains Trains & Automobiles v. Summer School -- here's a shockling litte note: John Candy was never, at any point in his life, funny. He was just fat. If he weighted 150lbs he never gets a single role. And even by 1987 Steve Martin had ceased beign funny too. Maybe I'll vote for Roxaanne once or twice just for the Cryano de Bergerac take. In any case Planes Trains deserves to go down, and so I will vote for a movie I barely remember and which starred the 80s most boring star (Mark Harmon) over it. Besiudes, Summer School also (although I do not remember this) apapraently had Courtney Thorne Smith in it, who was pretty hot in Ally McBeal, and Shawnee Smith, who was pretty hot in The Blob. So maybe there was somethig there to watch after all and I ahve just compeltely forgotten it. Die Planes die! Vote Summer School.

Patrick Swayze made two good movies in his life: Dirty Dancing and Ghost. To rate Roadhouse over The Lost Boys is delusional.

Mullet Region, 1st Round:

1. Ferris Bueller
9. Police Academy
-- Ferris is, has always been, will always be one of my favorite movies. Police Academy... won the coin toss (I've never made it through either it or Crocodile Dundee in more than five minute stretches)

5. Real Genius
13. Teen Wolf
-- This one came down to the battle of the Top Gun hotties, I'm afraid. Real Genius beat out Diner mostly because 1980's Val Kilmer was the stuff of this girl's dreams, and Teen Wolf beat out Risky Business because my hatred of Tom Cruise goes WAY deeper than cult-y personal choices.

6. Wargames
3. The Lost Boys
-- I mean, come on. Both of these were childhood staples (though I will have to admit to a pang of guilt at so callously tossing aside both Big Trouble in Little China and Roadhouse).

7. Coming to America
2. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
-- Sexual chocolate! 'Nuff said. And, sorry Brickie, but the Candy/Martin snooze-fest won the coin toss; I can honestly say, however, that it would require the Clockwork Orange treatment to get me to ever sit through it or Summer School ever again.

For more entertaining. Lost Boys was a waste of time. But Roadhouse was bad enough to wrap around and get good again. Great to giggle at. AND gratutious violence and T&A. What's not to like? :p

The only good thing about Roadhouse was, IMHO, Sam Elliott - right up until the moment he got the crap kicked out of him. Lost Boys, on the other hand, featured vampires, Keifer Sutherland, a town so much like Santa Cruz you could taste it and did I mention Keifer Sutherland?

;)

Mullet Region...

Ferris Bueller (nuff said)

Crocodile Dundee (hated both movies, but HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED Police Academy)

Diner (dunnno what this movie is either but Real Genius was bleech to me)

Risky Business (Gadget, I'm with you on Cruise, but this and All the Right Moves were pre-hatred)

Wargames (Broderick was awesome in the 80s)

Lost Boys (staple)

Coming to America (this first rounder went to triple OT, but I'm with Brick on this one)

Planes, Trains, Automobile (this has its moments, but Summer School SUCKED)

again, top secret was VEHEMENTLY discussed. yet another bubble team, much like ruthless people and down and out in beverly hills.

in the end, with Airplane represented, and Kilmer getting Real Genius in there as well, we felt both the actor and type of comedy were better represented than if top secret was in there.

but man, it was tough.

great job all, i cant wait to share!

My picks for Mullet Region...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off vs Romacing the Stone: Ferris for the win! Who is voting for Romancing the Stone...anyone? This is like pitting the Birdman against Vince Carter in a dunk contest. Ferris is a righteous dude and John Hughes walked on water in the 80s. Eminently quote worthy movie.

Police Academy vs. Crocodile Dundee: If I could only watch one of these movies for the rest of my life, what would be my choice, eh? Can I have a colonoscopy instead? My pick is Crocodile Dundee, the lesser of two evils based on number of sequels spawned.

Real Genius vs. Diner: Real Genius maybe more popular but my pick is Barry Levinson's Diner though I must say that I did not watch the Diner in the 80's. I'm a sucker for buddy movies where groups of old friends get together like the Return of the Secaucus 7, The Big Chill and this one. Features a wonderful, realistic screenplay that has become a rarity in today's films.

Risky Business vs. Teen Wolf: I had to go with Risky Business as I haven't seen the other movie.

Wargames vs. Big Trouble in Little China: Easy pick, Wargames is much more fun.

Lost Boys vs. Roadhouse: Haven't seen either of these. Lost Boys wins the coin toss.

Coming to America vs. Back to the Future : This is a tough matchup. I'm going with Back to the Future as it is one of the first movies that come to mind when you think of the 80s.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles vs. Summer School : Planes et al may be corny but it has its funny moments and has the heart in the right place like any John Hughes film, so it is my pick.
