49ers

I don't share the sadness you all feel about Nolan sticking around. I'm looking forward to seeing what the team can do next year with a better offensive coordinator. The defense is looking good and should be at least good if not great for several years to come.

I'm not sure I like Martz as OC for the niners. We'll have to wait and see who's available, though.

I also think the Yorks have done just fine, at least over the last several years. I guess we'll just wait and see.

Interesting that Nolan would relinquish full control. Now his destiny is not in his own hands. If the new GM doesn't give him players, then he's gone. I guess it doesn't matter, though; if he didn't relinquish control, he would be gone anyways. I find that decision by the owners to be intriguing.

An interesting name I saw in that article was Cam Cameron. I don't think he got put in a good situation in Miami, and would be surprised to see him get fired after just one season. But if he does, I think he would make a good coordinator for the 49ers.

The impression I had was that Nolan and the 49ers were looking for a GM last year as well, but the guys they wanted to interview weren't interested or weren't allowed to talk because they were still under contract elsewhere.

Assuming McCloughan becomes GM, I doubt this will affect Nolan that much. He hired McCloughan and they've been working together for awhile, so all it really does is relieve him of some extra work and give final say when they disagree on personnel to McCloughan.

So according to the press conference:
  • McCloughan is now GM and has final say on personnel.
  • Nolan is happy with that decision and that is what they've always expected would happen eventually.
  • Jim Hostler was fired.
  • Nobody has contacted the 49ers about talking to Singletary yet.

Other notes:
  • Nolan and McCloughan don't expect their relationship to change much other than Nolan not spending as much time on final decisions as he did before.
  • McCloughan expects there to be competition for the QB position (and every position) next year. He and Nolan made it sound like they want Hill back but they haven't decided on Dilfer. They will also consider bringing in another QB to compete if they see a good one in the draft or free agency.
  • Nolan finally seems to be acknowledging that Hostler was a main problem in the offensive issues they had this year.
  • York acted like they may have considered letting Nolan go but they were happy with his evaluation of the problems this year and proposed solutions for next year.
  • Nolan wants an offensive coordinator that can succeed with the personnel they have (or will have next year) and hopefully someone with experience.
  • I thought I heard McCloughan say that they were going after free agents again this year, but not as many as they did last offseason.

I expect the 49ers to have a pretty good year next year (though I expected them to win the division this year, so take everything I say with a grain of salt). Depending on who comes in as offensive coordinator, the offense should improve with more experience at QB (either Smith with another year under his belt, or Hill building on what he did the last month of the season), with Frank Gore returning, and with a fresh offensive concept.

As a side note, if Nolan squanders this second chance he's getting, Bill Cowher's name should pop up as a potential candidate for head coach. That's not a bad thing.

Definitely good news.

Right now, I'd rank the names I've heard as possible contenders like this:

Cameron
Gailey
Zampese
.
Billick
.
Martz

Depending on what happens with the Bengals and Marvin Lewis, Zampese's name might be in consideration for that head coaching job. But he would be a good choice for the Niners OC.

So might Billick, and I rather doubt he's interested in being a coordinator at this point in his career. He's about to be 54 years old, and that's a significant step backward for a coach that's already won a Super Bowl. I'd be more inclined to say that he'll land in Miami or Cincinatti as head coach.

Chan Gailey would be a nice choice for an offensive coordinator. I'm sure he's interested in getting back in the NFL after getting beat up by the Bulldogs the past few years.

Mike Martz? No. He'd be a mess in San Francisco, if you ask me.

Cameron - I'd like him, kmew how to use a good RB and and talented TE.
Gailey - experienced and coached very good offenses.
Zampese - eh...he's just a QB coach...never been an OC so I'll pass.
.
Billick - was good in Minnasota but in 9 years never could give the Ravens a good offense.
.
Martz - nah, with him we would need a good QB, good Oline and good WR's...also doesn't run the ball that often.
I'd say it will be Cameron or Gailey, most likely Gailey.

I guess I'm in the minority about this, as I'm not really that excited one way or the other about a new OC. I'm more worried about giving him something to work with.

Don't fret VF!

Alex Smith will probably be back to full strength come training camp!

::Insert the puke emoticon that 6th uses::

Just to clarify, my list was intended to indicate that Martz is at the very bottom of the names I've heard mentioned... in other words, please no Martz!

Perhaps a better ranking would be:

Cameron
Gailey
.
Zampese
Anybody else
Billick

Martz

Hope he does some special thing with Gore and VD.
Can he teach them how to catch? I love both of them, but they could use some work in the hands department. I think Davis will especially benefit from this move. Martz is pass-happy. Some quality WRs would be nice. I wonder how Martz and Nolan will compromise styles. Nolan favors a strong running game. Martz likes to pass on practically every down.

This is a bold move by the Niners, certainly can't say Nolan is being conservative with this hire.

The problem with Martz isn't that he's pass happy, the problem is that he is such an egomaniac that even when the opponent has completely shut down his system he won't sway from it. For the same reason it seems nobody wants to put up with him even when he's producing.

Sorry 9er fans.

Im torn on this one.

He's put up some amazing offenses.

But then...We are 'led' by Alex F. Smith...I just dont think he can or ever will get it done.

Also, will he utilize Gore? I hope so because outside of VD, he is the only pleasing offensive option on this team.

The first player Martz talked about was Frank Gore. He was quick to recognize that Gore is not just a good running back, he's also a good receiver.

To be fair, Martz does say later that Gore will be the centerpiece of the offense and should play every down unless he's tired. It's just going to be interesting to see whether that means he'll run for 1000 yards or catch passes for 1000 yards.

Of course, I'd be cool with both. ;)

When healthy, Marshall Faulk was good for 250+ carries and 80+ catches a season under Mike Martz. Those numbers were insane. Martz got heavy production out of his running backs every year. Darrell Jackson would be a good #2 receiver in Mike Martz's system. He could easily fill the Isaac Bruce role of being a go-to possession receiver. We do need a solid #1 WR though to be effective. The offensive line has shown they can perform at a high level at times. We have a lot of young, improving talent. Heitmann and Staley are very good and getting better. Larry Allen, while aging, is still one of the best LG in the NFL. We need one more solid guard and one more solid tackle to emerge out of the group of guys on the bench. Harris, Bass, Snyder, or Smiley need to break out or be replaced. Bass and Smiley in particular are both capable of improving and developing into solid starters. One more piece and the O-Line will be solid. I don't know if Alex Smith or Shaun Hill has a strong enough arm to effectively function in the vertical passing system, that is a point of concern for me. Frank Gore will do well in the new system. His problems with catching the ball should correct themselves in the offseason. The guy did play with a recovering broken hand for a large part of the year.

I know talk is cheap, but I like the sound of what Martz said...Leaves me a bit more optimistic about the season...The way I see it, if either Alex or Hill can be decent, and we get a viable #1 wide receiver, we can have an above average to, heck, even good offense.

OB: Smith/Hill...The wildcard, IMO...Bad play in a Martz offense won't be pretty.

WR1: ???...I say look to aquire someone...Chad Johnson is said to be available? Or even down to a Bernard Berrian. A real threat who is at least somewhat of a game changer. Something I don't and can't see getting from Battle or D-Jax.

Possession Receiver 1: D-Jax...He can fill the possession role, and I think could flourish as the non-featured receiver. I see a big rebound from this sub-par year...Even if there's bad QB play.

Possession Receiver 2: Arnaz Battle
...He's a luxury to have as a #3 guy...Definitely not good enough to be a number 1, borderline number 2, but as a 3...Looks good.

Home Run Threat: Ashley Lelie...I think with how Martz likes to wing the ball all over the place Ash is in for a huge rebound from his 2 year slumber of mediocrity.

The Feature: Frank Gore...Apparently the centerpiece. 2000+ all purpose yards?

The more I think about it, the more I like it...Especially if a big time receiver is brought in....Then you throw in Vernon Davis and the young offensive line getting a year older and hopefully better...On paper it could look good...

Man, it's gonna be a long wait.

Long wait indeed. And the Pats own our first rounder.

Well I've heard the Lions may be open trading Roy Williams so I'd love to have that guy.

But I'm excited to see what it will be like, can't really complain about marz unless people want hostler back lol

Martz knows offense and that's what we need.

I'd trade a pick for Roy any day of the week.

Heck, Id even consider our first...That guy is a bona-fide side stud, and he is young to boot.

Add in he already knows Martz's offense, and it seems like a fit.

Get it done GM man.
