I won't question the veracity of that statement, but I don't know if I'd stipulate that "Christmas song" and "Christmas carol" are synonymous. Otherwise "Santa Claus, Go Straight To the Ghetto" would have made the list.

Hell, if I were including Christmas songs, the list would have had a lot more flavor in general.

I was definitely feeling ya on that call. To me carols are something you might go out and sing around the neighborhood, but otherwise maybe you'd just gather with family and sing together in the family room before or after your Christmas meal (this was common when everyone went to my grandma's house). Whereas the other good stuff (Christmas songs) you might have playing in the background at a casual meal, what I am expecting when me and my brother and my son have dinner with mom this year.
