2020 Shelter in Place Alphabet Movie Draft - BONUS ROUNDS

#1
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a global shelter in place order remains in effect. Unfortunately, while you have your home, your family, pets, plants, kitchen, and all the amenities, you forgot to stock movies for entertainment. Due to a surge of internet use overwhelming the bandwidth and making internet streaming unreliable, you decided to order your favorite 20 movies for delivery.

Little did you know, your neighbors also forgot movies, and need their own set. Amazon has modified their ordering policy to only allow 1 movie per alphabet letter. Therefore, we shall have a draft to settle this civilly. Unfortunately, you only have the funds for 20 films…choose wisely!

Rules:
  • There will be 20 total rounds, and each list will include your favorite 20 letters with a single option for movie titles beginning with number(s) as well.
  • You may draft letters in any order, just no repeat letters/number picks.
  • “A”, “an”, and “the” do not count as a first letter, and the next word begins the title.
  • For films that have different international titles, either version may be chosen, however, additional titles are off the board.
  • Official title disputes will be settled by the imbd.com film page, please provide a link.
  • All movies must have been released in theaters. No made-for-TV, no Netflix, no Amazon, etc. Too many of those films just aren't available for everyone to view and it's hard to expect people to vote for a bunch of obscure films no one (except you) has seen. You cannot pick a trilogy as one selection. Each movie is stand-alone. In addition, you cannot pick a "director's cut" or other version of a movie if someone else has already selected a different version. You can pick a remake, however. NO PORN.
  • I am the commissioner. Registration, draft order, rule changes (if any), and any disputes/questions will be handled by me. VF21 and Jespher will provide assistance as needed, and I appreciate mod help and guidance as needed. Thanks!
  • There is a time limit of 24 hours between picks. This becomes really important because of the worldwide distribution of our members. When you make your pick, it is up to you to send a PM (start a conversation) with the next person to draft so they know they're up. I will try to keep the board updated as quickly as possible. If the 24 hours expire, the pick goes to the next person. The missed pick may be made up, but only until your next pick comes around. At that point, the missed pick is forfeited. If you think you might be unable to post your pick in a timely manner, you can send it to another member of the board to post for you. It is then their responsibility to notify the person who is on deck. Make sure you check the lists of selected movies. If you pick a movie that has already been taken, your pick is forfeited. I reserve the right to replace any participant who misses more than two rounds. In the event that happens, the new person will be allowed to make catch-up selections to catch him/her up with everyone else.
  • The draft will be NON-SERPENTINE. This means if you get #6 in the first round, you will have #6 in each subsequent round.
  • No trades are allowed. Once you have selected a movie, it's yours for all eternity.
  • EMBEDDING: Do not embed the full movie, even if you find it somewhere. In the past the Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB.com) has served as the common source for information about movies so a link to them will suffice.
  • After the completion of 20 rounds, we will conduct the playoffs with Kingsfans.com members voting in each round until an ultimate winner is determined.
Bonus Round!

The pandemic continues…The stimulus check has finally cleared, and after bills, back taxes, and expenses you find a few extra funds for more movies. To complete your collection, you need 7 more films, one per letter. Fortunately, guidelines have loosened some!

Bonus Round Rules:
  1. Alphabetic pick may include first or last letter of any word in the title, including the number pick.
  2. Fill in letters may be made in any order, and do not need to be alphabetical.
  3. The draft order will remain, without change. Nice job so far all!
  4. Other predetermined rules remain for eligibility, although some TV would be nice, let’s stick with the original rules here.
  5. Please update earlier pick pages with your favorite awesome content to sell your pick and describe your preference for it. I have included links to the selection page and will use this for final rankings/playoffs.

Due to popular demand, and to drive my brother nuts, the draft continues with a Bonus Bonus Round! Three picks more to make it an even 30 films.

Bonus Bonus Round Rules:
  1. Fill in picks may be made in any order, and do not need to be alphabetical. You may choose movies with the same letter as desired
  2. No copies of previous picks. Original remakes are eligible, but no dice selecting a previous selection to add to your island.
  3. The draft order will remain, without change. Nice job so far all!
  4. Please send a PM to the next drafter following each pick.
  5. Any film available to rent/watch is fair game this time. Netflix, made for TV Rankin and Bass, etc. Go nuts!
  6. One film per choice please, no series, seasons of TV shows, etc. Try to keep this to feature films.
  7. Please update earlier pick pages with your favorite awesome content to sell your pick and describe your preference for it. I have included links to the selection page and will use this for final rankings/playoffs.
  8. I'll pencil Black Panther in for Mr. S£im Citrus :).
  9. foxfire wants me to pencil in the Rankin and Bass Hobbit for him too...

I voted back when I had a little extra time and was coming here more regularly and also before I realized that the vote might mean I was going to be asked directly to join later. :p

I think I'm going to skip it this time. If you need someone to make it a certain number feel free to PM me.

Sorry folks I'm going to have to bow out of this one. Not because I don't like the format, I just have a lot going on right now with family health issues and extra work deadlines to meet for the summer. I will be following your selections and jumping in to comment when I can though. :)

#21
I also sent a PM to bajaden to check interest. I think 12 is a good number of drafters. If we only have 11, we could also do a Joker pick. Thoughts?

#22
I sent a PM to Mr. Slim Citrus to randomize the 11 participants this morning. For now, lets do a Joker pick as the 12th draft spot. If anyone has interest, they can take over the joker slot.

#25
Bajaden got back to me today. He is interested and can have the Joker pick. Looks like KainLear is on the clock. Please send PMs to the next drafter.

Thanks for the randomizing Mr. Slim Citrus!

Alright, I'll start with the movie I've just recently revisited and has been in my mind as an inspiration for my own writing...

Casablanca (1942)

Director:
Michael Curtiz
Writers:
Julius J. Epstein (screenplay), Philip G. Epstein (screenplay)
Stars:
Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid

Do I need to explain this pick? Almost every frame of the movie is an icon. Bogart's and Bergman's performances are so subtle yet nuanced and complex. Propaganda yet it's only served as the by-product of the principal action and plotline. The understated romance is both visually beautiful and emotionally moving.

Winner of 1943 16th Academy Awards Best Picture, Director, Screenplay
and nominated for Best Actor (Humphrey Bogart), Supporting Actor (Claude Rains), B&W Cinematography, Editing, and Scoring of a Dramatic Picture.

To fill my "S" column in the alphabetical movie draft, I select:

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

Written and directed by George Lucas

Starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness

Like Casablanca in the first slot, I don't think this film needs much explanation. This was the very first film that my parents and I taped off of TV using our brand new Betamax. We didn't really even understand how it worked. We sat through the movie in complete silence to make sure that when we played it back, our voices weren't on the video! And in terms of space adventure (as opposed to true sci-fi) I think it is still, and will remain the gold standard. Not only did Lucas pave the way for the special effects blockbusters of today, but he did it with imagination and style and an incredibly tight screenplay.

And then there's the opening hook: "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away", the epic John Williams music as the crawl runs up the screen, the pan to Tattooine, and suddenly the space battle introduced from behind as the small rebel ship is dwarfed by the Star Destroyer that seems to pass by overhead forever, highlighting the hopelessness of Leia's cause in the opening minute. Sheer brilliance.

Great, kid! Don't get cocky!

All right, standard G3 rules in that I won’t be repeating any films I’ve taken in previous drafts. That’s 50 movies crossed off my draft board right from the word go (Had three duplicates last time for you math wizards and Cap).

Even still, my wishlist is fairly loaded at each letter, particularly the one I’m starting with, where three of my top ten along with several other favorites are lumped.

Strategically, that should mean I could wait on this grouping and target more thinly populated letters, or so you’d think. But it would seem I too am a 9-year-old boy, Jack Jack, just one of an earlier decade, and I can’t go a fourth time through one of these things without tapping my favorite movie from my childhood

B is for ...

Back to the Future (1985)

I literally have no memory of a time in my life when I didn’t love Back to the Future.

My wedding cake topper was a bride and groom standing outside a DeLorean.

October 21st, 2015 will forever be “the future” to me even if it’s now almost 5 years in the past.

1.21GW + 88mph = epic awesomeness. Johnny B. Goode = most rockin’ song ever. Flux Capacitor. Lightning Bolt. Clock Tower. Where we’re going we don’t need roads!

Really is astounding it took me so long to jump on this one. I mean sure, I can say after countless viewings, there is some 80s movie trope creakiness, and the played-for-laughs unintentional oedipus subplot has never not been awkward.

All the same, even 35 years later, this hits on all summer blockbuster cinematic cylinders: it’s both wildly thrilling and funny, dialogue is witty and natural, set-ups lead to superb payoffs, score is exceptional, dozens of “attention-to-detail” Easter eggs for repeat viewings, and Lloyd and Fox have such great chemistry you forget to wonder why a 70-year-old mad scientist and a 16-year-old skateboarder are best friends.

Through the years as I’ve explored more and more films, and my favorite movies list has shuffled dramaticlly, Back to the Future has managed to be a mainstay. That’s largely because, while I love several more complex, evocative, and frankly superior films, including a few in the B grouping, I’m not always in the mood for one of those.

I am however, always in the mood for Back to the Future.
