Let's see...Dallas has an aging Dirk, an injured Matthews and Parsons, and that's basically it. Utah just lost Exum and is going to be forced to trot out Trey Burke. Phoenix has no Marcus, a disgruntled Markieff, no continuity at PG, and a center past his prime. Portland has Damian Lillard and a bunch of business cards for real estate agents. We have a future Hall of Fame coach with his first chance at holding a training camp, one of the best big men in the game in Cousins, we have Gay, we have Rondo, we have a brand new Trilliant defender, and we have depth the likes of which we haven't seen in recent memory.

I feel pretty good about our chances to come out on the top of that grouping, not the bottom.

And I never approve of the stupidity that is gambling...however in this case I would have to agree. Vegas wants to put our over/under at 31 games, I'd drop $100 on it and consider it easy money.

Unfortunately professional gamblers cannot afford to be quite so flippant and political as can BSPN bloggers.

Dallas also has Zaza&Mcgee- by far the best Center duo in he NBA and the original D-Will... so they are a playoff lock!!!

But in all seriousness, I'm not on the optimistic side of projections here (not a Rondo believer) and I still think 31 wins is really selling us short.

Utah brought Neto who is a decent PG and gained Burks back (which is huge for them) and I'm actually higher than ESPN on them.
Phoenix has a ton of (mostly off-court) issues which I'll think will take them out of the playoffs contention.
Portland is too high in the west ranks for me (I see Lilard getting Kobe-esque numbers and the team going way down in the standing).
And Dallas will still talk in that race imo.

Out of the lower teams I can see all 3 teams (Denver, Lakers and Minnesota) being better than their projections, but I'm not sure that they want to. it's kinda crazy cause I think in the east they could be quite pormising:

Nelson/Mudiay at PG, Foye/Barton/Harris/Chandler/Gallinari at the wing and Faried/Nurkic/Hickson at the big-men is a roster you can build a Phoenix-type playoff sleeper from.

Clarkson-Kobe-Young-Bass-Hibbert with Russell, Randle and current 6th man of the year Lou Williams is not a bad roster.

Rubio-Martin-Wiggins-KG-Pekovic with awesome depth like Andre Miller, LaVine, Muammad, Payne, Bennett, Bjelica (Euroleage MVP), Dieng and KAT is actually pretty good on paper.

Quite a few teams have gotten in with exactly 45 wins over the past decade, but it has been since '06-'07 since anybody got in with fewer (Lakers/Warriors both with 42).

This of course is ignoring the strike-shortened season of '11-'12, where the Jazz and Mavericks got the 7/8 seeds with a 36-30 record...which comes out to 44.73 wins (rounds up to 45) in a full season.

I am not a believer in Lillard at all. Good player, but not a superstar. Horrible FG% with Aldridge and now that he is the only one left, what is that going to look like now? He is a "Robin" that now has to be a "Batman," which he isn't. He will certainly shoot a lot. Cringe worthy material right there.

Lulz. ESPN ....come on now! At this point you could get better sports insight from Cartoon Network.

We could have been a 40 win team last year if it wasn't for PDA.

Now we have Karl and a bench. And Cuz is a freak who gets better by the month.

We're a .500 team, minimum. Unfortunately, that doesn't guarantee POs in the west, but predicting 31 wins is just asinine.
 
I don't think the Jazz really at this point in time lose anything by losing Exum (he could be decent in the future) I don't really see that this move effects them at all. If the Suns trade Keif than imo it's impossible to get equal talent for him and therefore I think they could be out of the race to me he was going to be there X-Factor cause he's the only complete scorer they got.

Jazz and Mavs are out biggest competition (if things get sorted with Kief than it's the Suns) for the 8th spot and if the Twolves explode someone they could be a sneaky darkhorse.

The Jazz by far to me are the biggest threat cause those boys play D and they got young guys coming into there primes like Hayward/Burks/Favors and younger player improving bigtime like Gobert and Hood. I would not be surprised if they engineered some trade to get a decent PG.

I've been searching and I can't find any real numbers. That 31 is total speculation. Anything under 40 though and I'm talking my rich friend into putting up a couple million at least.

They'll likely make the odds around end of september, just before training camp.

Mavs should start out slow Wes coming off the achellis and Parsons just had Microscopic surgery.

Well for what it's worth the NBA future odds in regard to winning a championship or the western confrence is actually lower on us than ESPN:

Betonline has us as the 4th least likely team to win a championship (76ers, Magic and Hornets have worse odds- tied with Denver, Portland and Brooklyn), and the 2nd least likely team to win the western confrence (Denver has worse odds, tied with Portland).

Mybookie.ag has us as the 5th least likely team to win a chamionship (76ers, Magic, Minnesota and Hornets have worse odds- tied with Denver, Portland, Brooklyn and Detroit), and the 2nd least likely team to win the western confrence (Denver has worse odds, tied with T-Wolves).

Topbet has us as the least likely team to win a championship (tied with 76ers and Hornets), and the least likely team to win the western confrence (with quite a margin actually).

5dimes has us as the 7th least likely team to win a championship (76ers, Magic, T-Wolves, Hornets and Nets have worse odds- tied with Denver, Portland and the Knicks), and the 3rd least likely team to win the western confrence (T-Wolves and Nuggets have worse odds- tied with Portland).

and Vegasinsider.com has us as the 3rd least likely team to win a championship (76ers and Hornets have worse odds- tied with Orlando), and the least likely team to win the western confrence.

So based on that, I doubt that it will put us at more than 35 wins to start the year.

so it's been nearly a decade since a WC team got into the playoffs under 45 wins and a year after the last playoff appearance by the Kings...does that mean this year the drought ends? it ought to make for a fun race for the 7-8 seeds no doubt.

aha! This is more my kind of gambling. Tell you, and any one else who wants to emulate you what: you are all free to use my idea and put money down on the Kings to win more than 31 games, all I ask is a small finder's fee from each of you in return. Let's say 10% of any winnings. Just a drop in the bucket compared to the easy money I have turned you on to. Best yet, if you don't win and lose your house over it, I won't charge you! Hard to beat that deal. So everybody else, please feel free to put down your life savings -- this works better the more people you get joining in!

It's been done. Too lazy to look it up, but the Kings in the 1994/95 season with Brian Grant got into the playoffs with 39 wins. I admit that it's rare, but it does happen from time to time.

The problem with Portland isn't Lillard. The problem is that all they have is Lillard. They lost four, count them, four starters from their lineup. They also lost Afflalo and Wright. They've gone young and young doesn't win a lot of games. I have them finishing last in the west battling it out with the Lakers for that spot. Take Kobe and Hibbert out of their lineup, and you have the Lakers summer league team, that had trouble winning games against a bunch of wanna be NBA players. Anyone that thinks Hibbert and Kobe gets them over the hump is smoking something.

2007 Warriors, Lakers 42 wins a piece. Almost a decade ago. Let's hope that tide turns.
 
My prediction:

Team will go on a 4 game winning streak - KingsFans.com becomes MotherTruckingKingsFans.com "Told you this would work!"
Get on the train! CHOO CHOO!!! Napear's head explodes.

Team will go on a 4 game losing streak - Mass Seppuku. Likely with a frisbee. "Told you this wouldn't work!"
Carmichael Dave becomes FolsomDave. Napear's head explodes.
 
Team chemistry on the floor and lots of assists into December will go long way to 15-20 more wins. Then all the other prognostications have better chances of happening.
 
After seeing what Rondo did in Dallas and how our FO snatched a good start and squashed it like a grape last year I understand why we are projected so low. I don't fault anyone for their low projection. Look at how F-ed up our last 8 years have been. Until this team and FO prove that they can get out of their own way for at least one season I don't think we as fans should expect any love from the local or national press.
