Well, there was first ever in WC history drink water break in oppressive heat, humidity of contest played in Amazon rain forest. I believe that was at least 30 seconds for a swig by players and refs. 4 minutes extra time is not unusual at all in futbol matches and 5 minutes definitely not unheard of.
I'll have to take your word for it; like I said, I don't obsess over soccer how I obsess over basketball (I don't obsess over anything like I obsess over basketball, except maybe professional wrestling), but I've seen more soccer matches than I can count on my fingers and toes, and I've never seen five minutes of ST.

Seriously unlucky. But you can't switch off at this level and they did quite badly.

So impressed with Fabian Johnson. That kid is a work horse. Ran himself into the floor.

USA and Germany can draw the ire of the whole world now by playing out a draw to both go through. Has happened before.

Okay, time for another stupid question by VF21...

The officials can just decide to extend the game as long as they like? And this comes on the heels of the recent news that a bunch of officials had conspired to fix games? Do I have this right?

"Injury time" is added on to the end of 90 minutes (and half time) based on how much time was wasted during the 45 minutes. It varies from game to game as each game is different and it depends on whether players were injured and the game was stopped, whether players were time wasting, goals scored (which cause delays), substitutions etc. Generally speaking, it varies from about 2 - 6 minutes, but more or less isn't unheard of, though uncommon. Just depends on the game. The fourth officials (the referee looking guys on the sideline) decide the amount of time to be added (injury time). Say for example, 3 minutes of injury time was added at the end of 90 mins. But during those three minutes, there's a substitution, and a player gets injured and is rolling around for 30 seconds. Then the ref should really add another minute onto that 3. Sometimes they do, often times they don't bother. It's up to the discretion of the ref. They're not required to end the game after 3 minutes on the dot as usually happens in American sports with the timer/buzzer etc.. But I haven't really seen anything out of the ordinary so far, certainly not anything that would warrant claims of fixing (which may or may not be true, but certainly unlikely based on injury time anyway).

Hope I explained that clearly - I think I made it sound more complicated than it really is.

5 minutes was totally normal. They initially announced 4 which seemed right and then a sub was made at the 90 mark and the board switched to 5.

It really doesn't matter, Bradley and Beckerman quit playing 30 seconds too early and that's what happens.

Realistically think there will be at least 30 seconds added for every major event. Injury, sub, penalty, goal.

Also, stoppage time is always too long when you are winning and too short when you are losing. :)

In preparation of the big game tomorrow morning, and to show my excitement and enthusiasm for the Men in the Red, White, and Blue, I say the following to you..........

Got what we needed out of this one, a few yellows which could hurt us but probably won't, but otherwise the boys didn't really have to beat themselves up to hold the game close and Portugal did their part.

I was kind of hoping Klose would get the German goal but Thomas Muller will own that record when he's through anyways so it may as well be him.

Really liked the German kits today. If I looked good in soccer shirts I would buy that one.

Oh duh. I just had a lightbulb moment. :p Stoppage time is because they don't stop the clock during the game when the events you've referred to above happen, right? Oh geez...
Don't feel bad; you're being way too difficult on yourself.....Considering soccer was never your cup of tea prior to the World Cup, you are doing just fine with your discussions/questions. I think you're getting a hang of the game much quicker than most who are in your position would...

I'd comfortably put money on Holland the way they've played so far.

Would like to see Argentina-Germany final (barring US miracle run).

I hate seeing games like that go to penalty. Brazil really does not look like one of the world's best 4 teams playing at home. Colombia will be another test. James is just sick.

Colombia vs Brazil is going to be a fun one, I have the young Colombian squad taking it however. Interesting to see how that Netherlands Mexico game goes tomorrow morning.

I didn't make a bracket or place any bets, but my figurative money is on Colombia too.

I see Netherlands running through Mexico, but maybe I'll be surprised :)

Sucks for Mexico, but hooray for Costa Rica (I actually had them going through and was a bit down when they took the second yellow and surrendered the late equalize. But they were deadly from the spot. Great for CONCACAF.

What an incredible match between Costa Rica and Greece, straight up dog fight from start to finish. Costa Rica however let it almost slip away from them in the 90 minute mark with the late goal by Greece.
