Andrei Kirilenko

July 11th is an interesting date to choose. Sure sure, tournament over and everything. But it also seems very much NOT to AK's advantage...and possibly to ours. By July 11th many of the teams wiht cap room will already have commited most of it other players, then all of a sudden in the late market AK appears. But how many $$ are going to be leftover for him?
That's excatly why. If the Kings are the only team left with cap room on july 11th his choice is the Kings or Europe.

This can go either way. It will either be the reason we sign AK or the reason we don't. The biggest downside will be if the Maloofs are telling Geoff that it's either JT or AK .. under this scenario we will have had to have signed JT or will have lost him by the 11th.

If the Maloofs open up the books a little bit, then this can be good for us, because we clearly aren't going after anyone aside from our own guys. Let all the other teams spend their cap room while we sit back and wait for Kirilenko to fall into our laps.

That is why AK is our best shot and probably most realistic attempt at getting a defensive minded SF and the Maloofs better not be cheap about it even when the price for AK shouldnt be too bad.

You know the great thing about Cisco? He took Omri Casspi under his arm. Omri Casspi was there to take his job, and he did it anyway. Here he's out recruiting Andrei Kirilenko. AK47 will bury him on the bench forever, but he is doing it anyway. Its one of the reasons I don't like to see Cisco's name blithely tossed around in trade proposals with our other bad contracts. I continue to think that he has real value as chemstiry, glue, the truest current King etc.
On the flipside, I think that's why he ends up in trade talk. Cisco probably has actual value for other teams. It's harder to trade a guy like Salmons, even though they are both overpaid.

I'm sure you know this, but july 11th is the first day anyone can actually sign a contract.

Ah I can see it now ...

Kirilenko to sign with Nets?
Forward Andrei Kirilenko is reportedly set to return to the NBA after a stellar season playing for CSKA Moscow. Reports have him leaning towards signing with the Brooklyn Nets after talks broke down with the Sacramento Kings. Kirilenko, more commonly known to fans as AK47, is said to have been persuaded by Kings guard Francisco Garcia to join the Kings and their young core of Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins. Sources close to the deal however, report that talks broke down when the Maloof family, owners of the Kings, refused to offer Kirilenko anything over $2 million/year. A day after talks broke down, Joe Maloof tweeted "Sorry fans, we can't afford it", but removed the post soon after.

Kirilenko is now rumored to be in negotiations with the Nets and Russian billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov.

When asked how he felt about Maloof's tweet, Prokhorov replied in a rather puzzled manner, "I'm very sorry, I do not understand what 'can't afford' means".

it's been reported that the offer they made to Thompson would start with a salary of $6,000,000 in the first year. If we add Robinson's contract ($2,812,200) and we assume Honeycutt's option will be picked up ($850,000) we would be at $53,109,316 total.
Not much room for AK, because I'm sure we'll stay under the cap. If we re-sign JT (and I hope we do), we need a trade to get AK. Well, there is another way to get him, something every good owner would do. Amnesty Salmons. But I know it's a pipe dream, the Maloofs are too broke to amnesty someone.

Now it's on record that they can't afford it. We all knew that but I don't recall it coming out of their mouths. So if they can't afford it, what the hell are they doing? No answer is required but I am very disappointed because it sounded like AK was ready to come here. No one should own a team if they can't afford it. As the screwing of Sacramento fans continues...........

How many problems would AK have solved? I'd like to know what he was asking. And if we can't afford $2 mil, we can't afford anyone new. Stop the dreaming. Fill in the rest of my thoughts with pained obscenities.

Glenn, I don't think it's a real report... No sources and nothing on the internet. I also highly doubt Prokhorov would have said that (even though I'm sure he doesn't know what "can't afford" means...)

Or not, given that all the other free agents are negotiating and getting promises etc. right now.

Unless of course AK's reps really are doing the same thing, just very much behind the scenes...

After Deron and Amy departed, Kirilenko told a Moscow reporter that the Nets and Jazz were "my top priorities" if he returned to the NBA.. Since then, Kirilenko has been training with Team Russia. This week, he told a Russian paper that he could still choose to stay with CSKA Moscow (who would pay him $3 million). More tellingly, he said his agent hasn't contacted any NBA teams and he expects to make a decision by August 1. By then, there'll be little money for any remaining free agents.

Have you considered any proposal from the NBA? Andrei Kirilenko: Not yet. NBA players can't accept offers until July 10. In the meantime, my agent has contacted nobody. Izvestia

When are you going to make a final decision? Andrei Kirilenko: I very much hope to make a decision before August 1. I would like to quickly determine my future. I will not make hasty decisions. Izvestia
Could be good or bad. His agent hasn't contacted any teams at this point so that could explain no offers being out there. Also could be good that eventhough NY and Utah are his top options, they don't really have any room for him. If we have money this time next week we could quickly turn into one of his better options. Of course he could always just go back to Russia, so who knows.

The only problem I see, is if Kirilenko wants to wait until aug 1st. The Kings can't afford to just sit around and wait for him to decide if he wants, first, to play in the NBA, and secondly, whether he wants to play for the Kings. Same thing with JT. You can only give them so much time, and then you have to move on.

He appears to have told Cisco "let's wait and see what happens on the 11th", or something along those lines. I got the impression it was more we'll start talking to teams around the 11th, and AK wants a final decision no later than Aug 1st, rather than waiting until Aug 1st.

The Aug 1 date seems odd given the reports that CSKA Moscow needs them to decide to either stay in Russia or return to the NBA by July 15th.

Accoring to Sport Express and eurohoops (?), Kirilenko is leaning to stay in Europe.

I'm going to wait for something official, but if true, he's burning some bridges in the NBA. And of course thats his choice. But one would think that at his current age, he'd like to get get a 4 year contract somewhere for big bucks. The longer he stays in europe, the less value he'll have long term because of his age.

Maybe he doesn't need as many millions to live on as the average player. It would be difficult for me to play in a foreign country for all the reasons a person can imagine. There is also his wife's wishes to take into account. Apparently he is making a decision not driven by money and I respect that. There is more to life than money and he already has far more than I could only dream about. I think he very much knows what he is doing and may be enjoying himself more than if he was in the NBA.

What is the deal with everyone wanting kirilenko so bad??? He is a career 31% 3 point shooter, so he isnt exactly peja. He is a decent defender but no where near a lock down defender. Who thinks this guy is worth more than a few million dollars. If the kings gave this guy anything more than the mid level exception they are bigger idiots than i ever thought.

right, everyone wants him and you disagree yet we are the idiots? how about actually knowing what you are talking about. he is a multiple all nba defensive team and in the euroleague defensive player of the year. he blocks shots and steals well for a small forward. and that 31% career 3pt %. try looking at the trend as opposed to the last line on a stat sheet. 36.7% in 10/11 and 41.7% last year with cska. so back to your original question. why does everyone want kirilenko so bad? because we need a defensive sf that can hit the 3. if you are not willing to spend more than the mid level for that...

May be you are right but I am not so sure about this 'home thing'. He is not a very russian Russian. He came to America as a very young man and is a citizen now. He truly loves SLC and this country. His wife is very international too. She is a daughter of a rich businessman and former pro basketball player. She lived and worked in London. The Kirilenkos live in France during the off season.

However, I completely agree with you that it is not about money anymore. If I am not mistaken, he donates every dollar he earns.

He just wants to be happy and enjoy playing basketball.

Does he have parents or siblings? Where do they live?
