Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

Okay...so we are onto Kung Fu movies huh? Alright...:

American Pie (1999) R

I am such a trend ignoring rebel.

So, I have a lot of comedy on my island, and am generally happy with the state of my island's laughs. But one style of comedy I did not have was the juveile sex farce/fart joke variety. And hey, I am not above it. And few have done it better than this one. You know what else I did not have a single example of on my island? A naked girl -- something which I will never see again on my island if I don't have one in a movie. R movies all over the place, but it was all a very American R -- you see in America we believe that the sight of one female boob will scar you for life far more than thousands of people dying in over the top mayhem. And if you were going to finally add a naked lady to your island, you could do a lot worse than a naked Shannon Elizabeth. So generally i am happy to welcome this one on board.
I was wondering if that was gonna go. Probably would've been my rebound pick from losing Anchorman had I participated. Nice one. Then again my favorite movie as well as the movie I had slated as my 1st rounder are still available, so me saying good pick is probably a bad sign.. :p

This was also in consideration for my last pick. Would have taken it eventually.

Paint Your Wagon - 1969

This is not a particularly well-made movie. Nor even a really good movie. But it is incredibly entertaining by accomplishing the rare feat of being both intentionally and unintentionally funny.

Famously lampooned by The Simpsons "All Singing, All Dancing" (Homer: Thank God it's Lee Marvin. He's always drunk and violent) Bart and Homer's horrified reaction is about the same as anyone finding out two icons of rugged masculinity are starring in a stage adapted musical rom-com. Especially as Marvin gruffly grumbles through his verses and Eastwood warbles off key looking at the camera as if it's all some cruel joke.

Beyond that, I'm falling back on a dual defense of nostalgic pick and guilty pleasure. So there.

I need a little more over-the-top violence and Verhoeven mixed in. That's right, boys and girls, it's time for the future of law enforcement:

And now, this creep will take his move by selecting a film that will, once again, make nobody say "nuts". With my next selection I choose Le Scaphandre et le Papillon ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", 2007, PG-13).

This is another film with superb cinematography - a pure treat for the eyes. On top of that, it's a brilliant portrait of a man with a rare condition called Locked-In Syndrome - where the entire body is paralyzed (in this with the exception of his left eye) but the mind is intact. Far worse, I'd say, than simply being on a desert island, so I can watch it when I really get down about my situation. Even more amazing than the film itself is the fact that it's not fictional - it's taken from an autobiography, painstakingly "dictated" through a system of blinks. Take that, Kung Fu! Take that, robotic policemen!

For William Blake:

Starship Troopers (1997)
Funniest Sci-Fi war movie ever. Too many people I know took it seriously, but it's actually satire, and great satire at that.

Okay...I have seen that. I'm worried about you Capt. -- wanting to watch it over and over again I fear might be a sign of looming mental imbalance. :p At its best it gives you the uncomfortable feeling that you are in lockdown yourself. You feel as trapped as the character. Not pleasant.

Am I supposed to be a man, am I supposed to say, "It's OK, I don't mind, I don't mind"? Well, I mind! I mind big time! And you know what the worst part is? I NEVER LEARNED TO READ!

Is that true?
Yes, everything except the reading part.

Wayne's World (1992)

Ahh, memories of my youth.

Coincidentally, I turned on the TV this morning to check the channel guide and what jumps off the screen at me? The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. It's a sign I made the right choice!

From the so bad its great category...

Flash Gordon - 1980
One of my favorite movies as a kid it is still a guilty pleasure I can never turn away from. I remember seeing it in the theater and having the Queen soundtrack which is also in the so bad its great category. It was also one of the first videos we ever rented, on Beta from a photobooth of all places on Folsom Blvd, we watched it every day that week.

Anyhow its got one of my all time faves in Max Von Sydow, Timothy Dalton (who's Bond is criminally underrated) and Ornella Muti as Ming's seductive daughter. Richard O'Brien is even in here. This is a fun flick which is intentionally campy in the style of a 60s Batman as a throwback to the original serials.

Sorry to hold things up. Seems like whenever I leave it speeds up. With this pick I'm taking on one my favorite 80s films, River's Edge. It's a really good film based on true events and parts of it were filmed right on the American River. It has a lot of nostalgic value for me, reminds me of good times growing up in the 80s. It also has a pretty nice cast.

Well now if we ever get started on so bad its good flicks that could open up a whole other bottle of worms...

I've always had a soft spot for this flick, and while I have a host of 80s and 00s films, I need a bit more 90s flare on my island. The cast for this selection is exceptional (Redford, Poitier, Akroyd, Kinglsey, etc.), the script is witty, and the action and suspense are entertaining and good fun, not to mention some career defining awesomeness from River Phoenix. This film is a fun romp of techspionage. With my 14th choice, I select:

Sneakers (1992)

Too Many Secrets...

Heh -- that one for some reason never occurred to me, but I kind of wish I had remembered it as a fun little caper flick.

I saw the original of this movie years ago, like everyone else, and we thought it was revolutionary. In many ways it was, but technologically speaking, it doesn't hold a candle to the sequel. I'd imagine that a lot of people didn't like the new one specifically because it's not the old one. Plus, it's light on story and substance, but none of that takes away from visuals of it, which are mind blowing. And then they threw in some nice 80s riffs and a score that sucks you in, and I just can't say enough about it. Plus they gave you some eye candy, which is always a good thing. And Michael Sheen's histrionics. In reality, the first movie doesn't hold a candle to this one; don't confuse nostalgia for quality. I said before that I'm assuming I have an HDTV and some nice surround sound, and I'll put both to good use with this pick.

With the 222nd pick in the 2011 TDOS Tropical Island Video Vault Draft, Superman's Super Movie Lineup selects:
TRON: Legacy (2010), directed by Joseph Kosinski

Along with Goonies my other most shocking cult movie phenomenon is the original Tron. I was there to see it at a drive thru as a kid. It was bad, even as a kid. And then in another on eof those eyebrow raising devlopments, 25 years later I wake up one morning and discover its got a following...and they are even going to make a remake (although of course they remake everything nowadays), which I have not seen). How do these things happen?

For Dime Dropper (he is out most of today):

Cinema Paradiso

I don't have any subtitled film on my island, nor do I have any real romance. You have to have both for something a little different. CP is one of the best of both genres. It's far from stereotypical and is really beautifully told. The culture, relationships and sense of change throughout the film are pretty amazing and it's a film I'd really love to have on my island. It's not just a romance, in fact there isn't even that much of it in it. This covers so much ground that it's not hard to see why it's so highly regarded.

Not a bad pick for what it is. Like you said, a bit light on story, but not a bad film at all. Fun flick for the eyes and ears. Lots of great visuals.

I'm here, although I'd like Warhawk to continue as organised (thanks for that Warhawk), as I probably won't be around tomorrow.

It's funny how people's opinions differ. I definitely don't consider myself a film snob, but I was never one to appreciate a film for loud bangs and bright flashes. To me it's manufactured junk. However, I haven't seen many of the films which are classified as such so I certainly don't think myself above them. Likewise many would see my favourite films as emotional mumbo-jumbo. Think that's what makes a concept such as this so interesting. Good luck to all :)
