Wow, I'm surprised at the polarizing effect of that loss. Where should we stand?

The Kings lost to Miami, the Kings were outplayed by Miami, the Kings gave the win to Miami, the Kings couldn't handle Miami... The Kings remind me of Miami.

What? Yeah, the Kings remind me of a team that drafted a star in 2003, bonded quickly, displayed great chemistry, and pushed into the second round of the playoffs the same year. That was in the East (then known as the Least), so I don't think the Kings will push into the second round out here in the ultra competitive Western Conference, but they may contend for that eighth spot. (I must confess, this viewpoint is not mine originally, I adopted it after I read Spoelstra saying about the same thing somewhere else, maybe the Bee, and I thought: "yeah, that's a good comparison")

First though, they have to address some glaring deficiencies brought to our attention by that game against Miami:

- The Kings must improve their FT shooting. Percentages in the 60's aren't going to cut it in the big leagues.
- They must learn how to effectively play a non-zone defense. I'm not really into schemes, so I don't have a suggestion, but the zone they played against the Heat was an epic fail.
- Hawes and Thompson have to address their mental issues, I can't stand the inconsistency.
- The doctor also prescribes more passing. If you give up the dribble at the top of the key with more than 18 seconds on the clock, I better see at least two more passes. One on one is not an option, not when our star players play the same position as 75% of the league's other stars.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was encouraged by the uptick in attendance, too bad we were out executed in front of a decent home crowd almost the entire game. The fans wanted so badly to become involved. I felt like one string of good play in the fourth would have swung the momentum over to us, too bad missed free throws threw ice water on the smoldering crowd eruption every-single-time. Oh, it was painful, I even threw things. I'm sure I threw things. I can't remember because I had my eyes closed, repeating in my head: "Don't miss, don't miss, YOU FREAKING MISSED! Why do you play basketball for a living!? *@*%$%!" Ugh, I don't want to think about it anymore.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Awards:

TDM: Dorell Wright. 19pts on something like 78% FG shooting from the bench is worth some props.
LW-VC: James Jones. And some people think we we have bad contract situations: 4.3 million to average 5 pts and 2 rbd. 1 rbd and 1 stl in 12 minutes against us.
JHA: I bet you guys think Spencer deserves it huh? No, Thompson deserves it. I could at least get the theory as to why Spencer was in the game so much - he helped space the floor. Thompson was sucking and just kind of took up space.
RA&1: - Chalmers. Only because I expected more. I'm having a hard time giving this one away:eek: Bad sign for our team.
SAR/Methuselah - I'll give this one to Spencer because it seemed as though he could have gotten outplayed by a 42 year old last night.

WTF moment of the game - I said it every time they missed a free throw, so it should follow that 62%FT shooting gets the nod. Better not continue.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris Paul is back. Sucks for us, 16pts, 15ast, 8 stl on a rusty ankle. Yep, that's what we got waiting for us. Okafor has laid out his utensils and is ready to gobble up all the rebounds I'm sure Spencer and Thompson are planning to duck away from. Is it a conspiracy? Are our two talented starting bigs plotting our own collapse? Maybe they want John Wall. Maybe they're trying to prove to us that the Kings still suck and we need to trade for a beast in the middle to help them out. I don't know, and I'm an apologist! I try to find a reason why we're so soft in the middle, but now I'm sick, sick, SICK! (Tell us how you really feel) Okay, I think that as long as they continue to struggle they'll never hear the end. I feel like I finally bought the car I wanted and now it can't stay out of the shop. What a disappointing stretch of play. If neither big shows up tonight we lose by 13. Easy. Paul will find a way to exploit the advantage, and it will only be pretty if you're wearing blue.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's our beacon of hope: If our wingmen show up to play the game should stay close, and we'll have a chance to win in the fourth. I at least have Evans's incredible consistency, Nocioni's intensity, Greene's passion, and Casspi's general awesomeness to look forward to. They will make it a game I'm sure.

New Orleans 99 Kings 95

PTS: Evans 30, West 24
Rbds: Thompson 8, Okafor 14
Ast: Udrih 7, Paul 13
Blocks: Greene 2, Okafor 3

In light of recent events, I am compelled to watch just to guage the teams resolve. I hope they are not disheartened by being outplayed by a team with a superstar, a good young coach, competent veteran roleplayers, and a (maybe) future all-star PF. I also like the way NO and the Kings Match up. If for nothing else, tune in to watch Paul and Evans go at it. I'm happy to say we should probably get ready for another close, competitive game.

GO KINGS!!

Not surprised by the polarizing effect of the loss. Am very much at peace with the fact that while most thought the Kings would win 25-30 wins this year, many of those same people are ticked we lose to Phoenix and Miami. Go figure. The schedule gets a lot harder from here on out. Even with a borderline All Star in Tyreke, there's still a lot of growing pains ahead.

I am actually going to the game with two Pedja fans and a former Kings now lakers fan - my father.

It will be brutal - hopefully for them

Can't do that but I do remind him of his hipocricy about every day. In 2002 he hated LA more than I did. Today, kobe is god way bigger than MJ. He is an older man little senile but it works well for him. Some people follow players some people follow teams. Players come and go. I might stop follow NBA if Kings move away but I can't imagine supporting any other team. Hell, most of them I really dislike anyways.

The schedule doesn't look too bad for the remainder of December. Only four out of 12 opponents are over .500 at the moment (Blazers, Cavs, Lakers, Nuggets). For January, 9 out of 15 opponents are over .500 so that will be tougher.

This will be a hard road game, Chris Paul is back.
If Sacramento want to win this game, then everyone needs to give 100%
Especially you SPENCER!
And come on, don't miss free throws!!!!
And no silly turnovers!!!

Amen brother! When the Kings leave, I probably won't watch any NBA, just sumo wrestling or something...anything, just so I won't have to have any Kobe fits because he's on the tube every 5 seconds. I know you love your father dearly, but would a die hard Red Sox fan ever become a Yankee fan?? If you WERE a Kings fan but now claim LA then you really weren't EVER a Kings fan in the first place. Glad you get to go to the game even under these circumstances, at least you get to see Tyreke and Pedja...unfortunately CP3 will drop 20/20/5 on us tonight. Go Kings eh?!? :D

Paul also had 6 rebounds to go with his 16,15 n 8 on his rusty ankle. Wouldn't be surprised to see him put up similar stats tonight.

I haven't been able to see much of the Kings this year, but can they play man-to-man defense at all? Because the Heat seem to be a pretty good 3-point shooting team, at least at first glance, and you generally don't play zone against good shooting teams. But I guess they could have taken the "let's smother Wade and let the other guys beat us" approach..

He does rebound well for a diminutive PG.

I think Noc, Evans, Thomas and Greene can play decent man to man. I suppose you would play Evans PG, Donte SG, Omri or Udoka at SF, Noc PF, and Thomas C as your best defensive lineup. But the other team gives us fits regardless if they're big in the middle, like the contenders: the Lakers, Celtics, Magic, and Cavs. As far as smothering Wade, the other Heat players besides Wade stepped up, and you just have to take the hit in the loss column if you don't play perfect.

we have a chance to win this game tonight. I hope that Kenny won't find a way to start. I mean - I haven't watched Kings live since 2004 and to see Kenny start would be sooooooo wrong.

If kobe went to Celtics - my dad would be their fan eventhough he hates Celtics.

Man love for Kobe is soooooo wrong.:D If my dad professed a love for Kobe, I would end the family visit on the spot. But only once; to try to get the point across.

not worth having a family feud over something like that

lot easier not to talk about basketball at all
I suppose you're right. I just got all worked up over the prospect, better to simply debate the merit of his Kobe fandom than do something rash.

This is a pretty big game for us. I know some people here don't like to talk about playoffs, but that 8th seed is almost possible for us. It's a longshot for sure, but we have a chance to take down another team that will be competing for that same spot, we need a W.

Quoting a paragraph from Omri's blog:

We’re not talking about setting goals yet because it’s still early. We’re taking it one game at a time. December is going to be a tough month, with games on the road at San Antonio, Cleveland and Denver among others. If after this month we’re still at .500, we might be able to start talking about goals, but right now we’re not there yet and I think that’s the way it should be.

Damn I live in so cal everytime I turn a corner I see a kobe jersey When I wear my kings jersey people look at me as if I were crazy , I just tell them yes I'm wearing kings jersey , I think the kings are gonna step up tonight but im sure the hornets are gonna be looking for revenge on us... CP3 and Okafor are gonna have chemistry tonight and will hurt us... Hopefully tonight our team can keep their free throw percentage up and hold down on turn overs.. WIsh I could watch the game but ill keep up to date at work with my phone .

Can anyone break down this internal board joke and explain the awards to a newbie out of market fan? Thanks! Go Kings!

Piksi: I'll root extra hard for a Kings win, for your sake. :)

My brother is a Lakers (gaaaaccckkk) fan. Unless they are playing the Kings, he promises. We'll see, since I bought tickets for my brother and SIL to the Kings/Lakers game on the 26th. If he roots for the Lakers, I'll have to ask security to show him out the door. :p

Look for the "game thread 'awards'" thread. I just bumped it to the top of the forum.

And welcome, BTW!!!

ESPNs John Hollinger gives the Kings a 15.7% chance to make the playoffs, based on this years statistics only.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/playoffodds

( Im not saying Hollinger is some basketball God, but his numbers are interesting, and he has to know something, right? )

In my original post I did say that it would be a long shot. You can say we wont be the 8th seed, I'll give you that and agree with you, but right now, in December, were only a few games out.

Today the Spurs won't make the playoffs. I expect that to change shortly. But it is interesting that some teams start slow and finish big, some start big and finish slow.

if we are around .500 after the all-star break we will have a chance to fight for 8th seed.
