My utopian isle could use some defense, and a good workforce. While everyone is blissfully in love, and laughing often, it will help get things done if I also have plenty of these. With my 9th pick, I select:

Superpowers



They just make life so much easier ;). I'm especially fond of Telekinesis, Astral Projection (self and others), Self Replication, Shape Shifting, Reality Manifestation, Enriching Auras, Animal/Plant Control, Time/Matter Manipulation, Flight, and Spontaneous Regeneration. Here's a good list though :).

This really is more about the journey than votes, but I think taking 7 or 8 picks in a row is a bit unfair since these drafts tend to go on runs of common items.

How about he gets caught up with the missed selections and at the END of the draft he can remove any of GW's picks and re-pick his own?

Or, alternatively, instead of having him catch up all at once, have him join the draft and when it's his turn, make a current pick and one of the make-up picks? Since this is a 20-round draft, there's enough time for that to be done and for the draft to finish with everyone equal.

And again, this is just the interested observer making suggestions ... nothing more.

Sorry Jespher, but I have to object to this pick... I think it constitutes of too many individual aspects to be considered as "one" pick. Plus, I already hold the "ability to fly".

As far as the Lowenherz situation I think what would make it fair is this... Give him the make up picks and let him continue the draft as normal. When the draft is over he can then replace the picks that GeraldWallace#3 made with something of his own choice...

Kind of left the Lowenherz thing hanging today since I knew I'd be out this evening, but while I had no problem with letting him do everything now, I think pdx's suggestion is probably the most fair. Lowenherz can pick up where GeraldWallace#3 left off and get his four make-up picks in as soon as convenient and can replace the other three after this thing wraps up. During the ranking process, I'd imagine.

Also, I'm going to update the draft board and remove the three picks that Lowenherz wants replaced, since I already know what they are. While it was suggested that they still be unavailable, I really see no reason to do that. I'm not going to draw attention to what they were, but as far as I'm concerned they're back in the pool.

Next point of business, I think Jespher's "super powers" pick is perfectly within the parameters of the draft. It may be a bit broad, even for me, but I certainly don't see it as any more general or more abstract than some of the other picks I've let stand -- "super powers" doesn't conflict with "ability to fly" any more than "European cuisine" conflicts with "Italian food."

What else? Larry89 is almost up again and has yet to submit a replacement pick for the "heath & longevity" selection, which is two things and therefore not draftable as one. Accordingly, he will be due three picks with his next turn (replacement, end of round nine, start of round ten). I have been very forgiving in allowing people to get behind and make several make-up picks, but any more than three at a time is getting a bit silly. If Larry89 times out again or only submits two picks by the end of his turn, I'm considering the last round (8th?) forfeited.

Lastly, kings4lyfe32 is already sitting on two missed picks, so it is actually Kings Faithful who is up now. In a similar situation to Larry89, if he falls behind any more I'm going to call one of the rounds forfeited. I understand that the new method of skipping past people who have already timed out means that there is less time to react and that it is easier to fall several rounds behind, but it's not like this draft has been moving so speedily as to make it difficult to keep up. Three picks in a row is already a strategic advantage for securing big or must-have items, and any more than that verges on unfair territory.

I thought the whoel way we let "flying" slip through was because it might have been mechanically aided?

Superpowers obviously flies in the face of that.

Nope. That was VF's suggestion for why it should be allowed, but actually had nothing to do with my decision. I have no problem with picks that aren't grounded in reality as long as they are limited to one, easily definable thing/group of things.

And so we're clear, I'm not talking about a two week excursion to visit relatives in Des Moines before dragging yourself back to the soul crushing drudgery of work.

This is the "School's out! We're free for three whole months!" nirvana that is the childhood summer vacation.

That means picnics, bbq, waterslides, summer blockbusters, 4th of July block parties, trips to the beach, visiting grandma's house, locking yourself away for month long video game marathons, anything your little adolescent mind could conjure as a way to forget in three months everything you'd "learned" during the previous nine.

Ah yes, the holy grail of childhood. Even now as a supposed "adult" I couldn't possibly pass it up.

This is one of those rare aspects of childhood I wound up enjoying even more as an adult for reasons that resonate beyond pure nostolgia. Growing up I appreciated the imaginative adventures and the simple humor that lies on the surface.

Now I see a lot more of the underlying deeper morality and individuality issues that ran beneath the surface. Plus I feel I can identify with both characters as a sort of yin yang of my own personality. I'd like to think I developed a good portion of my free spirited individualism from Calvin and my sobering sarcasm from Hobbes.

But not to make this too heavy, it is by all intents and purposes, a comic strip; a type of literary comfort food that always seems to soothe me.

All right, I'm on a roll. And my next pick should come as a shock to no one.

Surfing





When I moved to San Diego I swore I would never ever ever attempt the above sport. I hated the thought of being the stereotypical California carpetbagger moving to SoCal and immediately adopting the "hip" custom to try and fit in with the locals (btw, you're not going to accomplish much with the locals by being a newbie surfer, in fact it's just the opposite) ... all the while adding just one more wannabe to the already crowded waters. Seemed like the ultimate sell-out move to me.

Well, I quickly discovered something I hate even more: heading to the beach with a towel and (before it was banned down here) a cooler of beer and passively baking on the sand for hours on end. Mind-numbingly boring if you ask me. Feeling trapped by the mass of humanity sizzling on the sand, my only escape was into the water. And that's where I discovered surfing to be one of the few sports in which one can absolutely suck and still have an amazing time.

You'll hear surfers talk about a zen like commune with nature because of the sport's natural and necessary connection with tidal flow and the weather and a euphoric escalation of imagination and creativity. For me, I simply like coming home with the slow muscle throb and feeling of exhuberant exhaustion which I usually only felt after winning football games in high school. And there's no better way to practice trying to stand in the back of an ambulance than riding the back of a board.

Er...duh! You're supposed to spend that time scanning the beach for hotties in bikinis. Preferably behind dark glasses. Without moving your head. ;)

Last one for now and rounding out my first four picks that probably would have been chosen by a nine-year-old as well:



Christmas

None of that "every day is Christmas" stuff though. This is the all encompassing Christmas season, including the ever important but often overlooked building anticipation of the weeks leading to the day itself.

And I'm making it known I'm being rather selective here. This is: the hope and excitement Santa just might bring you that special gift. This is not: bratty kids expecting to get what they want and throwing a fit if they don't. This is: the spirit of giving and goodwill. This is not: merchandising Christmas sales in October and people being trampled and killed on Black Friday. This is: family and friends gathering to share the warmth of heart and hearths. This is not: guilt trips and constant reminders of the "reason for the season"

I'm taking the exterior lights, bright colors, warm ovens, crisp air and gentle snow, out-of-town guests, heartfelt donations, volunteering, the subtle glory of midnight mass, christmas eve dinner, milk and cookies, waking up at 4 am with the sudden realization of what day it is, opening presents in pjs and bathrobes, trying out the new toys and games in a sea of torn wrapping paper and, most importantly, the looks of overwhelmed joyful shock when someone gets just what they wanted followed by the endearing and geniune "thank you"

Home Movie Theater

Complete with leather seats, a THX sound system, and most importantly a big *** high definition projection television... Anyone whose been to the Fountains in Roseville and entered the Home Theater store knows the sheer awesomeness of these rooms. There was a Kings themed one down there as well!

I don't agree.... whats the point of me having the "ability to fly" when he is allowed to have the ability to fly plus everything else. Just doesn't seem fair to me that I can choose flying then have him go "I get flying, time travel, super strength, and the ability to talk to animals!"

The Ultimate Home Movie Theater (with nearly identical phrasing) is the centerpiece of my Man Cave pick so I must protest this pick.
I developed a fascination with home theater in the mid-90s when my uncle built an extension in his house to house a theater. Like me he is a gadget freak, unlike me he may just have more money than brains. So I've been chasing this dream on a budget for years, working with the space I have and with the equipment I can afford, slowly upgrading as time allows. When I moved to Portland I was finally able to own a home with a basement and have perfect light control without spending thousands on treatment.

In my ultimate fantasy land where space is not at a premium and cost is no object my man cave will be the ultimate home theater, with a well stocked bar and arcade area and room for small concerts (since I own rock and roll). But the coup de grace will be the private two lane bowling alley.

Well Jespher seems to be going general with his picks, and you seem to be going specific. The one problem I have with this draft is that people tend to step on other peoples toes with some of their picks (like this for example, or the alcohol picks). Going by the rules, Jespher's pick would stand. Otherwise, the fully stocked bar or the alcohol picks would not have been legal either

What good is it to draft Indian/Chinese/Italian/whatever food, if somebody has already picked food as a category? As an outside observer, I'd like to...observe that the way I'll judge these things will give great benefit to the more specific items, in favour of broader categories. So, for instance Indian food, to me, is much better than just drafting food. Just like flying is a lot more awesome than basically any other superpower and will thus be rated higher than superpowers. Don't know if anyone else sees it that way, but I do.

Food in general has its benefits as a staple of life, and does not necesserily cause people to think of specifics... however, choosing a specific food also has its benefits such as evoking certain tase preferences in others for votes... when it comes to super powers people don't just think super powers they think in specifics of super powers. So in doing that it completely nullifies my ability to fly which most people would probably consider the quintessential super power... also, in his description of super powers he specifically mentions "flying".

Edit: Forget it. Considering his choice of "european food" (which I also don't like) has already been established I'll just let this one fly even though I think I'm getting screwed.

I don't think they are the same, because mine specifically focuses on the movie theater aspect of it... and doesn't have things such as an "arcade". But if you truly think I'm stealing your thunder I will withdraw my pick without the use of a challenge.
