I liked him too, though I was willing to overlook a lot of weaknesses - he exhibited some very poor decision making all season and while his yardage numbers were great he was awful in the red zone. I think Josh came in wanting to make it work and may have seen that Cutler is a pure gunslinger and not one to spend hours watching tape which just won't fly in his system and it was all downhill from there.

But even if it was a bad fit he should have been a man about it and done this privately instead of through the newspapers.

What a freaking idiot.

It's too bad for the Broncos that the Bears were only mediocre last season, instead of downright dreadful. But if Mark Sanchez is there when that first round pick comes around, he might wind up being the new Denver Broncos quarterback. And that would be a good thing for him, I think.

By the way, did I mention how stupid I think Jay Cutler is?

That isn't the worst deal in the world considering what he's done to devalue himself over the past month. And now he goes from easy to throw in Denver to a run first division with the most brutal weather in the league. I doubt the Norris division is the ticket to the big pay day he seeks.

Torn between hating on McDaniels and dealing with the realization that another highly touted QB has failed to live up to Elway's legacy.

Of course in his own way Cutler has... by refusing to play for the team that drafted him and forcing a trade.

As a Bears fan, I'm really happy with this. Didn't think Jerry Angelo would be so agressive, I'm not too fond of him (or Lovie, for that matter).

Orton did a solid job last year before his injury, so he should be OK to fill in until the Broncos groom Sanchez or whoever for a year. Good deal for both teams, I think. Now we just need to get Cutler and Forte some help.

I'm bitter and Cutler has for now bumped Manning down to #2 on my most hated QBs list. The Bears fans I know seem to be quite happy but they gave up a lot for someone who is still a very unproven quarterback with a losing record. His passing yards were nice but despite the yards they were 16th in scoring and he was awful inside the 20 on both sides of the field. He also had an offense built around him and I don't think Chicago has anything close to the receiving talent Denver does.

But what really alarms me and why I am glad he is out of town is that I get the impression that he thinks he can do it all with his arm on the field and doesn't need to put the time in to watch film and learn the pre-snap part of running the offense. His reads once the play has started have been awful which is why he gets picked a lot and if he isn't watching the tapes he's never going to get better. Maybe he will learn in Chicago and good for him if he does, but he had two of the best QB coaches in the business and got one fired and refused to play for the other. That would scare me.

Ruh-Roh... looks like Crybaby Cutler and his daddy don't like his new offensive coordinator.
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/04/03/cutler-ron-turner-have-rocky-history/
As a high school senior in southern Indiana, Cutler accepted a scholarship to Illinois where Turner was the head coach at the time. Cutler committed without visiting campus, though, and when he arrived for an official visit Turner reportedly pulled the offer.

“When Jay went for his official visit, the coach told him they were rescinding the offer because they had some hot-shot quarterback from California,” Heritage Hills athletic director Jay Burch told Denver Post columnist Woody Paige.
...
“It’s not right,” Jake Cutler, Cutler’s father, told ESPN.com. “I still have a bitter taste in my mouth.”

Chicago doesn't have anyone half as good as Brandon Marshall; they don't even have anyone as good as Eddie Royal. They do have Matt Forte, and that should help the passing game now that they have a decent quarterback.

Yeah I have to agree with everything you said here (Cutler moved ahead of Manning on my list, but is still behind Brady ;)), good post. I really can't see Cutler putting up close to the same numbers as he did last year. I honestly can't even think of any of the Bears WRs at this point other than Hester since Booker left, and Hester isn't a great receiver (great returner though obviously).

I'm surprised Lovie Smith is still there (Marvin Lewis, also). I wouldn't be surprised to see an entire new staff if the Bears don't make the playoffs this year.

Lovie Smith is only 2 years removed from a Super Bowl appearance and had a winning record last year even if they missed the playoffs. Why Marv Lewis still has a job is beyond me though. I agree that this year is make or break for Lovie because the QB excuse will be gone even though I expect Cutler to struggle.

As a long suffering Bears fan/season ticket holder, I immediately shifted into pessimistic, doom and gloom mode. What is the over/under on number of year before Orton wins Superbowl + number of years before Cutler is out from football/traded/released? I say 5.

I really liked Orton, and think he can become a star on the right team. Meanwhile, I wouldn't trust Bears coaches with Peyton Manning or Brady, let alone Cutler. Besides, our team leader (Urlacher) already hates him ("I guess he makes us a better team"). If he pulls any of that primadona stuff in Chicago he will be eviscerated (by teammates, let alone media).

Other then that, I am really looking forward to the football season.

I stick to the Pats boards but that's what quite a few Pats fans are saying too. I don't watch a lot of NFC during the regular season so I don't have an opinion but after what McDaniels did with Cassel I wouldn't put anything past Orton especially with the receiving corps they build for CBJ.

I find it difficult to believe someone with your credentials (long time bears follower) liked Orton and believed he could be a star. Orton was the beneficiary of being groomed in this offense for years, and while it's true that he did not have the most talented receiving corps, he constantly missed open receivers (granted, when he hit them, davis or hester would drop them) and made mind boggling decisions with the ball. The first half of last season was the first time Orton looked like and NFL QB. Of course he was going to look good, our last solid QB was Jim Miller.

The bears gave up draft picks that had no guarantee of contributing right away, and with Angelo's history of 1st round picks I'm not entirely sure they would have been that beneficial anyway. Cutler is an all pro QB who put up great numbers. Yes he did have a good offense as a whole but it's still up to the QB to get them the ball. All this prima dona stuff worries me, but we are no worse off than at the end of last season. We are better. We upgraded the QB position while not giving up anything of real value. Our picks are probably going to be mid teens anyway, our division sucks. Our team is getting old, our window of opportunity is closing. This is not a move for the future. It's a move for now.

Cutler has a lot of potential but way too much is put into his "All-Pro" status, he is not a top 6 QB in this league, though he could be in a few years if he improves his decision making.

NFL Receiver Reggie Williams Tasered, Arrested on Drug Charges

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,512838,00.html

HOUSTON — NFL receiver Reggie Williams was charged with drug possession after off-duty policemen used a Taser to subdue him when he refused to leave a bar.
Houston police spokesman Kese Smith says Williams was impaired when he refused to leave a bar Sunday night. He struggled with two off-duty officers who tried to escort him out and one of them used a Taser on him.
Police say jail officials later found a small bag believed to contain cocaine in Williams' back pocket. He was charged on Monday with possession of a controlled substance and freed after posting a $2,000 bond.
In February, the 25-year-old unrestricted free agent was arrested in Houston on drink driving and possession of marijuana charges, which were later dropped. He played for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.

It sounds like Williams is a moron and is clearly to blame here , but if I'm an NFLer I might start spending my offseasons somewhere besides Texas.

That was my first thought too... Campbell?? He may have potential, but so far he's average at best.
I personally like Colt Brennan better. Campbell wound up having a good year last year, and I think he could be a good quarterback for a good playoff team, but he's nothing special. Most people who aren't fans of the NFC East don't know anything about him. He's certainly not as promising as Jay Cutler, and if I were Daniel Snyder or Jim Zorn or whoever else makes decisions for the Redskins, I'd have been on the phone with the Broncos too.

From what I heard, however, Campbell sat down with his coaches and the general manager, got things straightened out, and now all is well. He did what Cutler should have done in the first place. And now the issue is a non-issue, if I'm not mistaken.
