"Classic" Ride Draft Thread - DRAFT COMPLETED!

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Hey look! An actual pick from the upside down bathtub era!:

1950 Ford Mercury Custom (from the movie Cobra)

Cobra was an utterly ludicrous piece of 80's high cheese, but it did produce one star performance. And no, it wasn't Stallone swaggering about growling ludicrous one liners like "you're the disease...I'm the cure", nor even Brigette Nielsen back in her prime. It was this baby -- a custom chopped top silver steel 1950 Mercury that was almost as badass as the main character. The choice of gutteral tight jean wearing toothpick chewing mirror shaded neandrathals everywhere (the guy in the pic is the guy who built the thing for the movie).

This was the best shot I could find of the car in the actual movie.

I'm quite prepared for many groans and eye rolls on this pick (and through ret-conning the previous two), but considering we've drafted cars that are magical, evil, fly, fight crime and travel through time ... I kinda don't care.

2007 Custom Western Star 4964EX Tanker Truck

Anyone who's seen the Music Video to Enter Sandman knows how intimidating a Semi-Truck can be. Additionaly, the custom paint job makes it like an uber muscle car/hot rod hybrid.

It also has a sleeping quarters; sure not nearly as luxurous as some of the land yachts chosen, but enough for a restful night on the road.

But the real value of this pick is a little more than meets the eye:

That's right fellow kings fans. I just added Autobot leader Optimus Prime to my abandoned city.

And with Recon/Special-Ops Agent "Jazz" (Pontiac Solstice) and Weapons Specialist/Military Strategist "Ironhide" (GMC TopKick) as my last two picks, I think my city and fantasy garage are safe from any post-apocalyptic zombies that may be roaming around.

So go on G3, bring on your "Tumbler". I have an Autobot strike team waiting for you :D

I must admit, that is some DAMN fine picking - very sneaky.... :D

Considering that a) that movie sucked; and b) the Autobots were complete wusses ("oh, we cannot hurt humans, oh waaahhhh"), somehow I am thinking she is not scared. ;)

As an aside, too late now for some of it, but I was going to suggest early on that cars = not trucks, and after that was passed over, that at the very least cars = have 4 wheels. Now that both of those are gone, I think the next line = cars must at the very least have wheels. This draft is wacky enough without treaded tanks and whatnot actually qualifying.

Ok, I knew what you were doing from the get go, but was waiting for you to go there before lodging my protest - Isn't this the same thing as changing a pick? If VF had picked a regular DeLorean I don't think she could have changed it to the Back to the Future car 3 rounds later.

You're just daring me to add Bonecrusher and Barricade. They delight in harming humans. My Autobots will have no qualms with the act.

And I agree: no tanks, hover crafts ect. (Because I actually looked into and considered both :D) I'm hoping to keep some semblance of civility along the lines of this draft's origianl concept and intent.

Now excuse me; I have to issue orders to my robotic strike team.

It has gotten whacky, but its been fun. I have no idea how people will vote given that there are some pure collector's lists and some real out there lists, its almost like 2 separate drafts at times.

I understand and had expected this protest, which is why I saved Prime for last, because I actually like the Solstice and TopKick as regular cars in case the move was vetoed.

On that note, I did everything but say "there's more than meets the eye" and put the Autobot insigna on the last two picks. The GMC TopKick jpg link even says "Autobot Ironhide" and I would have used the Transformers picture for Jazz, but didn't know if there was a differennce between the Pontiac Solstice GXP and the 2009 Pontiac Solstice coupe, which I liked the look of more.

I was trying to walk the thin line between being sneaky and obvious ... which is afterall, the cheesy fun of picking "robots in disguise" who clearly never really attempted to hide their identities ... and I think I did a fine job if you were on to me from the very beginning.

And besides, Brick's right; the movie did suck. Do you really think having three giant wussy robots instead of just one is going to win me many votes ;)

VF wanted variety and fun ... and I have yet to log into this draft and not smile.

I was always more of a Decepticon girl, anyway.
Gasp at my complete lack of shock.:D

Soundwave will be my first pick in the stereo equipment draft coming soon. ;)

I find it amusing that, after being credited with originally "breaking" this draft, I've got one of the most straight-laced lists around.
Considering that one of the very first questions I asked when this draft was started was if we could take the Batmobile (though I was referring to one of the cool ones) I don't see why you got that credit anyways :p

I assumed it was because I picked the Tumbler largely for its accessories alone -- 1960s Batmobile would be picked because it's great to look at, Tumbler is ugly as sin but got picked because it's got rockets and a detachable motorcycle.

Oh heck no it isn't ugly. It's a beautiful machine.

And I say if tanks were allowed someone should take the *modified* Sherman that Oddball has in the movie Kelly's Heroes:

Oddball: Well, yeah, man, you see, like, all the tanks we come up against are bigger and better than ours, so all we can hope to do is, like, scare 'em away, y'know. This gun is an ordinary 76mm but we add this piece of pipe onto it, and the Krauts think, like, maybe it's a 90mm. We got our own ammunition, it's filled with paint. When we fire it, it makes pretty pictures, scares the hell outta people! And we have a loudspeaker, when we go into battle we play music, very loud. It kind of... calms us down.

:D

Um, guys? I'd like to keep discussion of whether or not vehicles are allowed in the PM realm.

Thanks...

True, and ultimately rockets and motorcycles won't factor heavily in how I vote. Though I probably have different criteria than others.

I was hoping for fun. The whacky has been a bonus. What I have noticed is some people have really done their homework and the result is a great mix, IMHO, of classic vehicles, one-of-a-kind vehicles, etc.

It's fun to see how quickly people post their selections - as I know I'm not the only one who waits impatiently to be able to share my next selection.

I mentioned this in the beginning:

Winner of the draft will be determined by a vote based on whatever criteria the voters deem appropriate. Faster is not necessarily the only option. Durability, coolness, etc. might well factor in... or not.
I'm hoping when it gets down to voting that people will, as some have done in the other threads, include their criteria when they post their selections. I think there are a lot of very interesting picks and I've got at least one favorite from each participant's list.

:)

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X

I still like the Subaru over this one in terms of rally performance, but this AWD dream is also a car I wouldn't mind having.

Hey Bozz, I'm pretty sure there's more than one Alfa out there :)

There's something not quite right about that Lancia.

My next pick was incredibly popular when it first came out...

1970 Datsun 240Z

The Datsun 240Z's greatness derived from the combination of competent engineering, evocative if derivative styling, better-than-average performance and low price. The typical automotive buyer of the late 60s couldn't afford a Jaguar E-Type, but he or she could afford a 240Z. The Datsun 240Z was introduced in 1969 as a 1970 model, and it became an immediate sensation. With a smooth and solidly built 2393 cubic centimeter single overhead cam in-line six under its hood, Nissan claimed the 240Z could jet from zero to 60 miles per hour in eight seconds flat. The engine produced 151 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 146 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm, which lends some credence to that claim.

Under its sophisticated and very un-Japanese bodywork, the 240Z also sported a suspension with decent GT credentials. It was independent all around, relying on McPherson struts up front and Chapman struts in the rear. Steering was via quick-ratio rack-and-pinion, and the car was graced with front disc brakes. No, it wasn't an E-Type, but at just $3,500 it was a steal.

since VF took one off my list I will have to go with my alternative

'70 Nissan Fairlady Z-3

I do like the Datson one better but since that one was taken I will settle with it's cousin.
