he would make around 16 million that year. believe me he will execute the option or he stands to throw away at least 5 million dollars that year. thats only if some team signs him to a contract starting at 11 mil

16 millions ? WOW

he isn't worth half of it. So we can expect another trade before he gets a chance to get 16 millions. Maybe even sooner

According to the realGM trade checker:

08/15/02: The Kings re-signed Mike Bibby to a 7-year, $80.5 million contract.
That means his contract expires after the 08/09 season. (You skipped that year, real fan).

This wouldn't be the first time Hoopsworld made a mistake.

Okay, but she also shows "Lonnie Jones" on our roster, nbrans, so she's not infallible either.

If he does have a player option, I don't think he'd have it for TWO years. His contract will expire in June, 2009. An option at the end of the 08 season would be logical but not one at the end of 2007. I suspect it might be a typo.

A lot of players have one option that covers the last two years of their deal -- Webber just picked his up for the last two years.

I just "googled" Bibby contract extension and although there are a lot of references that all contain the same amount and length, none of them say anything about a player option.

His contract will expire in 2009, that much is certain.

Even if he does have an option, I'm not worried about it. It'll be more of an extension type deal (4yrs to round out the rest of his career) and not a significant yearly raise issue.

I believe Jones is a player who was in training camp with the Kings last year. She's reporting all contracts signed by the team, not the team's roster.

NewMonkey - Ah, good point. I'm still trying to get some confirmation one way or the other. It's tough because traditionally the Kings simply don't release contract info. It has to be out there somewhere, however, and I'm not going to give up until I find it.

Bibby has what is called an early termination clause in his contract at the end of this year I beleive. It's pretty self explanatory. He can end his contract if he so desires, but doubtful that he will. It's the same clause than Kevin Garnett has, Paul pierce had(until the extension) and a lot of big stars also have. It's very doubtful that Bibby will execute this clause and play out the remainder of his deal until '09

indeed...and as far as I know, Michael Bibby has EVERY year gauranteed on his deal, with no options, either player or team. We have him until 2008/09 season.

edit: I doubt it VERY seriously if he would envoke the 'early termination' clause...NO ONE will pay him what we do...he's smart enough to not bite the hand that feeds him, I dont think.

I have heard on various NBA programs that Bibby does indeed have an option to terminate his contract. It doesn't matter though because there is NO WAY he'd opt out of that deal. Way too much money down the drain.

I think Marc Stein at least has his facts right:

RealGM also has Mike with early termination: http://www.realgm.com/src_contractoptions/2006/

Bibby will not invoke the clause, I dont think any other team will pay him what the kings would if he remained with the contract

Pierce couldn't have an ETO 'cause if you choose to use ETO you can't negotiate extention one year before the end of the contract. He had player option. Garnett indeed has ETO for last year of his contract.

i dont mind if Bibby opt out. if he does, we can go after Billups who also has a Player Option which he will definitely exercise for a bigger contract.

While Bibby is a great shooting PG, with his salary off the books we could really shop around. I wouldn't mind having Steve Nash on our team. If you cannot beat um have him join your team. :D

I think people are being a tad unrealistic -- having a player of Mike Bibby's caliber just walk on you is very hard to replace, and can actually send your team spiraling downward. If there was ANY real chance of this happening, you would have to seriously think about trading him to conserve what's left of the talent base.

Given our recent history of retaining free agents, the idea of Mike Bibby walking away with nothing in return sends a chill down my spine.

#29
My prediction is that Bibby opts out and resigns with the Kings for more years, but less money per year than he would get if he stayed in his current contract.

I don't think Bibby would sign for less money to stay with the Kings. He's used to a certain lifestyle, plus he has a huge overhead in his personal life. At some point in his life he'll have to settle for less as his skills and earning power lessen, but to save face I don't think it will be as a King.
