Yuan Chang (CHN) defeats Hatice Akbas (TUR) on points 5-0, in Women's 54kg.

This was the first Gold Medal for China in Olympic Boxing. According to broadcaster Sean Grande, this win also puts the Chinese women past the Chinese men in total Olympic medals, despite a 100-year head start.

China has moved back to within one Gold Medal of USA, with an opportunity to blow past tomorrow: USA has eighteen opportunities to win a Gold Medal on Friday but is only favored to win one of them. China has twenty-five opportunities to win a Gold Medal on Friday and is favored to win seven of them.

tried giving Taekwondo a go but was just off put by the absurd amount of pads and have come to the conclusion that the best event of these Olympics has been Judo at least from a personal choice. Boxing has disappointed, no Lomachenkos in Paris for this one.

Hot take: Olympic boxing has never been entertaining, because of the rules and restrictions of Olympic boxing. People misremember it as being good "back in the day," but it wasn't good then, either; we remember it as being good because we had great boxers competing for us at the Olympics. Basically, we stopped pretending that Olympic boxing was ever any good when Americans stopped being good at boxing.

God damn, "Kid David" and "B-Boy Ronnie" are savage as **** on this breakdancing play-by-play. They were doing a fit check between Logistx (USA) and Raygun (AUS), and said that Raygun was dressed like she works at the Sydney Zoo, feeding kangaroos.

Also, it's wild how these breakdancers are allowed to use their nicknames in competition, but the Olympics website posts their whole government name on their athlete profile.

not just talking from an American boxing stand point, simply the competition from all the countries was lackluster in my view. But admittedly, this is my first year I am watching Olympic Boxing so we'll see if the opinion changes come 2028 and beyond

I believe you. What I'm saying is that it's always been like that, but Americans used to act like it wasn't, because Americans were good at boxing.

BREAKING: Canada wins the Men's 4x100m relay. South Africa gets Silver, Great Brittain takes Bronze.

United States finishes seventh (and will likely be disqualified upon review) after a blown handoff. This is now the fifth-consecutive Olympics that USA has failed to win Gold in this event.

BREAKING: Marileidy Paulino (DOM) wins the Women's 400m, with an Olympic Record (48.17s). Salwa Eid Naser (BRN) gets Silver, Natalia Kaczmarek (POL) takes Bronze. It is the first Olympic Gold Medal won by a woman for the Dominican Republic, in any sport.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone totally would have won this.

Aaron Brooks (not that Aaron Brooks, USA) is wearing Javrail Shapiev's (UZB) ass out like a man who knows he shouldn't have lost his semifinal match.

China has once again pulled even with USA in the Gold Medal count. I did not anticipate the Chinese becoming suddenly dominant in Women's Boxing. Between that and USA unexpectedly losing in events we have historically dominated, there's going to be a lot more drama in this medal race than I thought there would.

would you happen to know off the top of your head the last successful Olympic American boxer(s) that went on to have a successful pro boxing career?

been watching this weightlifting competition over the last couple of days and I just feel for all the eventual crippling injuries these lifters will get in the near future

Cindy Ngamba won the Refugee Olympic Team its first ever Olympic medal after earning bronze in 75k (middleweight) women’s boxing.

Atheyna Bylon, who defeated Ngamba in the semi-final match, will become Panama’s first ever female medalist.

Bylon will take on China’s Li Qian for gold tomorrow.

Rooting for Bylon for completely jingoistic reasons: China has already cleared four Gold Medals to retake the lead and is the favorite to win at least one more. A loss for China is a win for the US.

Go Bylon!

Just keeping an eye on things:

Defending Olympic Gold Medalists USA lose 11-10 in the Bronze Medal match. They not only fail to four-peat, but they finish off the podium completely for the first time in the history of the event.

US is still +2 over China in opportunities to win gold on the mat today, but they're not favored to win either one of them. One win would be big, both would be huge.

Bottom line is, we need this Gold in women's football. We need it: we can't afford losses in any more events where we're favored.

BREAKING: Masai Russell (USA) wins the Women's 100m hurdles, by 0.01s. Cyrena Samba-Mayela (FRA) gets Silver, Olympic Record Holder and defending Olympic Gold Medalist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (PUR) settles for Bronze.

Neither Russell nor Samba-Mayela placed at the most recent World Championships (Russell-DNF, Samba-Mayela-DNS). Per Ato Bolden, no woman has ever repeated as Olympic Champion in this event.
