Its insane to even compare them.
Mo Harkless is 4 years into a 6pt 3reb career distinguished by absolutely nothing. Not only is he a backup level talent, but he's not even one with a calling card.
Mo Harkless posted a 11pt, 5reb, 1stl in 24mpg playoff performance this year, while guarding the MVP of this league for extended minutes.
Obviously his problem is, that he isn't a reliable three point shooter. If he ever improves his jumpshot to even sligthly below league average, he is easily starting material, with his calling card being defense, rebounding and off ball movement.
He agreed to a 4 year 40million contract. We on the other hand, gave Temple a 3 year 24million contract (with the 3rd being a player option Temple will most likely take, because he will be 32 years old and most likely won't get another big contract).
Temple is 30 years old, with no upside, who is 12 years in a 4,5ppg, 1,4 rpg career.
When compared to Rudy it's clear, who has more talent. But Crowder isn't regarded as one of the better SF's, because he is so talented. Carroll didn't get paid by the Raptors, because he is so talented. Danny Green isn't one of the best wing defenders of this league, because he is so talented. And the list of players, who are way less talented than Rudy, but trump his impact on the floor isn't a short one.
Now if Rudy would buy in and finally play all out, with hustle and heart, we wouldn't have this kind of conversation, because Rudy has all the tools to be a great defender on top of being a good isolation scorer. But year after year after year Rudy decides not to go all out. Now he gives and interview, where he pretty much blames everyone but himself. Does this sound like a guy willing to give his all on the court next season?
I had a lengthy debate with KingMilz over Rudy Gay in the past. I always defended him, always said, he has all the tools to be what we needed him to be - a two way impact player. I always said the situations in Memphis and Toronto and the fact they got better after Rudy left weren't his fault or were much more complicated than "You can't win with Rudy Gay!". But as much as it hurts, I think KingMilz was right. Yes I still think Rudy has all the tools to be what we need most. But I don't think it will ever happen.
Obviously you need a lot of talent to even be an NBA player. Outside of Kendrik Perkins there aren't many guys, who aren't talented in the NBA. So basically I think Kingsboi has it right - in this case heart, hustle and passion may trump pure talent.
