For some reason this whole situation reminds me of the 2005-2006 season. Adelman's last year here. I just remember the narrative being the same. Lots of talent on the team but they weren't getting wins. Must be the coach. Never mind everything Adelman had done in his career prior to that season, one slow start, numerous 5 game losing streaks, and the narrative determined that Adelman was to stuck in his system and didn't coach defense, and he just had to go, too old, too stuck in his ways, we'd never win with him as the coach. The team was a projected lock for the playoffs and at the end of January were like 17-24.
I'll always remember one press conference after another horrible loss where Rick just went off on the media when they asked him the usual stupid questions regarding his system and if it was outdated or if he was being too stubborn, and it was the only times I ever saw him get pissed off in a situation like that, and he went on a tangent. I'm paraphrasing but he basically said when asked about his system "I know everything about every offensive and defensive play set that has been run in the NBA in the last 30 years, which one do you want me to run? Good defensive players play good defense, good offensive players play good offense, there are no secrets or gimmicks here. If you have the talent, players play hard and play right right, you win, if you don't have that, you lose".
At the end of January, Peja went out and Artest came in, the defense magically got better, the Kings went like 27-21. Made the playoffs, gave the Spurs a big scare, and suddenly Adelman was a good coach again.
Then the Maloofs fired him, but that's a whole different discussion.
