I'm beginning to wonder if Vivek is catering to the India market, attempting to drum up a style which will be attractive to a somewhat untouched NBA market which doesn't have the acumen/history to understand what wins and what doesn't win this league.
He seems to be playing to a lower common denominator, but one which has vast potential internationally and tens of millions of potential fans. I'm increasingly getting the impression his philosophy/marketing is not aimed at our market but rather capitalizing on a larger, untouched market overseas.
It's about suburbs in Roseville and Folsom, not Mumbai
It's about 2016-17 ticket prices. They just presume they will be good enough to make the playoffs in two years in the West (we'll see.) Their economic model,
which doesn't include any revenue sharing when the new arena opens, is based upon massive ticket price hikes.
To ensure they meet their economic goals (protect Viveck's wallet), they aren't banking on just the additional sales following both a good team and the new arena buzz. They are concerned that casual fans, particularly casual fans that loved the Webber Divac glory days won't be super excited to watch a team that plays like Jeff Van Gundy's Rockets. The idea is that many casual fans have tuned out for years (some truth), and when they start watching or catch a game in person some will say, "This team is so boring. It's not like the old days." (really?) PDA has clearly been giving the marching orders that Viveck's financial models require the team to be BOTH very good and very entertaining in 1 and 3/4 seasons.
It's no accident that PDA keeps talking about the new arena. It's the goal and deadline to determine whether he's going to keep his job. How many times this summer did he say "We want to be a good team when the arena opens."
We are a small market team with a decent roster. PDA has been ordered not just to make the team a fringe contender, but to make them an entertaining fringe contender. I can't stand PDA, but to his credit he's been giving unreasonable goals by an owner that doesn't understand what he's asking for is close to impossible.
