Malone fired

PDA keeps reiterating we have a new arena coming, and we want to have a style that fits that new arena. I think its exactly about how good the product looks. They want to have a flashy new arena with a flashy new offense. Sure, that'd be a lot of fun. I just dont think sacrificing wins to achieve that is very appealing
There are only two circumstances where I will not root for Kings players on the floor. One is if they have done horrendous things off the court. The other is if it is obvious that they are not putting their full effort into the game. If the players on the floor don't care about the outcome of the game than as a fan I can't either.

To me, a regime saying that wins and losses don't matter, and the true goal is just having an "exciting" brand of basketball is on par with the players going through the motions on the court. Sacramento has ONE sport and Kings fans are as knowledgeable about the game as any fanbase you can name. So frankly I see the idea of "we're going to have whiz bang, run-and-gun, excitement when we open the new arena" as someone trying to pull the wool over Kings fans' eyes. You know what is the most exciting thing you can see on a basketball floor? A CONSISTENT WINNING TEAM.

I'm beginning to think Vivek Ranadive is control freak - not unusual among self-made billionaires. His mantra of always hiring people smarter than him just a cliché to make them feel good so they don't assume he's domineering, omnipotent boss. It's the "Petey" show for pubic to see (he's now all over media after coup) and "Mully" coming on board to coach Kings just swell with the nerd GM - after all he suggested it! No, Vivek really thinks it's definitely him way smarter than everyone and told us as much coaching daughters basketball team. So as long as people come to worship his "new style" run, gun team all smiles all the way to the bank with buddies Petey, maybe Mully joining bizarre GSWarriors template experiment. Ok Vivek, prove me wrong. Just hire George Karl and get out of the way!
I've kinda always felt like that from the start. Also agree with the posters who feel that Vivek is treating the Kings as a tech venture. The "surround myself with people smarter than me" shtick is old and overused - after a certain point you could see that it was utter bs. He's aiming for something innovative, something different and unique. He's always been about NBA 3.0 and making the game more global and whatnot, and from that standpoint I can see the rationale behind wanting the team to play an "exciting" brand of basketball. The problem? These "fans" in India and whatnot aren't going to be the ones paying to watch the Kings live. They'll enjoy watching a game of basketball sure, but to most of them as casual basketball fans it will be very very true that style matters more than the actual win-loss record of the Kings. However, this completely sucks for us Kings fans who have been waiting years and years for a good team. Just when things seemed to be going upward, we're now thrown once again into a world of uncertainty and doubt.

An owner who wants a good basketball team focuses more on getting the basketball side of things right. An owner who just wants a global money machine focuses on having the most technologically advanced building in the world and whatnot, most of which simply don't matter to the average fan. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of us here would be perfectly happy going to a normal, comfortable arena and watching a 60 win Kings team.

This also sheds some light on the weird change in Malone's philosophy in the offseason. If you recall he was spouting stuff about us pushing the pace, moving the ball, playing more uptempo, running more, which got some of us a little concerned. It makes sense now that he was trying to say the right things to appease management.

The aren't going to throw their guy Mullin out there without getting him two very established and quality assistant coaches (just like GSW, of course) that Mullin gets to play a role in picking. Those guys won't be available until the summer. And, to give Mullin the best chance to succeed, they'd really prefer to give him a training camp.

Which means Corbin is a true place holder. He's supposed to both babysit for almost 60 game, while experimenting of the fly with this roster per Vivek and PDA's whims and ideas. The players can see the writing on the wall and it's probably going to impact their play.

When fans become upset that a season with a decent start has been botched but a nutty front office, the Kings will decide between installing Mullin under suboptimal conditions in February and replacing most of his staff after he gets his feet wet or hiring Karl.

It's a lock DMC will have 5 coaches in his first 5 seasons. Odds favor he'll have 5 coaches in his first 4. We are such a joke.

If Ty is coach through this season, it is gonna be ugly at Sleep Train. But they will probably do just that... and hope that a splashy new hire announcement will be in time to save the season ticket base. But I have noticed more aggressive ticket sales promos this year than ever before - I've never seen the Kings offer so many tickets at 40% off, or for $2, or whatever it takes to fill seats. It is disconcerting and will get worse before it gets better, especially if Ty is really coach for more than a week or so.

Word in NBA coaching circles is that Kings fear it'll be pretty difficult to convince Chris Mullin to jump into the X-and-O biz in midseason

Well this is good news. We need Mullin very far away from our coaching bench.
I don't think that is good news. If we ever role with Mullins, just do it now. Don't want until next season. We are already running out of time with Cousins.

Instantaneous Firing and Hiring
Firing Mike Malone at 1:30 a.m. on Monday,4 a little more than 24 hours after the Kings’ Saturday-night home loss to the struggling Pistons, was fast. But there’s no way Ranadivé considers that turnaround sufficiently real-time. We’re talking about a guy who wrote a book called The Two-Second Advantage, about the value of having information, and acting on it, before anyone else can. “Having information a little bit beforehand … it turns out to be a lot more valuable than all the information in the world six months after something has already happened.” I’m guessing that the full day’s delay was because last summer Malone had wisely hired Tyrone Corbin as lead assistant, thinking there was no way the Kings would fire him so long as Corbin was next in line.

But what if you could fire a coach instantly, right after he makes a bad play call? What if you could take him right off the bench as soon as you have the data that tells you he’s not the right guy, and replace him before the timeout is even over? I call it FiHireRe (pronounced “figh-high-errrrrr”) 2.0. I believe this is how Corbin will be replaced by Chris Mullin, during the second-quarter television timeout of the Kings’ game against the Rockets on Wednesday night.
A bit too long for a quote from an article, but Jason Concpcion, its all meant as an homage to some funny work. I'll shrink it down if it bothers you. :)

It all makes sense now.
From that Grantland article:

"How would it work? Well, our finest scientists are still teasing out the details, but it would involve opening a small, manageable wormhole within the earth’s atmosphere, preferably a safe distance from large population centers. I think a site inside the the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area would be ideal, what with easy access to the 84 and the 5, and nothing around but animals and trees.

The wormhole would then be used as a portal to contact the sentient AIs, which are known to roam the environmentally despoiled Earth of the 23rd century, using human beings as living petri dishes for the bacteria that the machines consume as fuel. Once a coach is fired under the FiHireRe protocol, he could then be shunted off to the future, to be used by the machines to grow bacteria. In exchange, the machines would provide the Kings with a self-aware coaching AI, which would then be put in charge of the team, provided the AI agrees to play an up-tempo style and is amenable to implementing Ranadivé’s 4-on-5 cherry-picking scheme."

Hmm.. yeah.. here's a follow up tweet:

Mullin IS said to have expressed interest in trying coaching side someday but easier w/training camp & time to recruit Steve Kerr-life staff

Now I am worried they will indeed just wait it out with Corbin and bring Mullin in this offseason. Wow.

Every time fans wanted the Kings to dump a coach or a GM midseason my question was always - who are you going to bring in to replace them? Because unless there's an upgrade out there, you're just looking at finishing the season with a lame duck interim coach who won't have the clout and will struggle to have the respect of the players that know he's just a placeholder.

So it's really hard for me to fathom an organization axing a coach of a team having it's best season in YEARS without actually having an replacement lined up. This is the type of firing you do when your team is 2-22 or 3-21. And even then you're just throwing up your hands and saying, "well, this seasons's a loss".

This isn't even emulating Golden State. The Warriors may have fired the coach of a playoff team but they did it AFTER the season when they'd already identified their top targets to replace him, created a very appealing job opening for those candidates and provided the full offseason for them to build a staff and get ready to implement their scheme in training camp. Why not finish the season with Malone? At the very least he would have cemented the defensive identity of this team and definitely made the job a more attractive one for the next coach. What halfway decent coach WOULD want to come in midseason with a FO that is trigger happy at best and deceitful at worst and try to change directions midstream?

This isn't a bold move. It's a loser move.

If Vivek brings in Mullin then its not about wins or style, its about copying everything that Golden State does.

Golden State made the playoffs once in the last two decades prior to the last couple seasons.
I'm tired of hearing about this team as if they're the model franchise. You throw **** against the wall for 20 years eventually something will stick.

PDA and Vivek are really good at both: (1) making it pretty clear they don't know what they are doing; and (2) coming off like know it alls, who think they have figured everything out because they think outside the box and operate like a tech company.

After all the Maloof ineptitude, spin, and later lies and KHTK covering for them at ever turn, fans have a better ear for this and no patience for this.

This team better play close to .500 ball this year and next ... or it's going to get ugly around here ... yes, PDA, even with the shinny new arena.

Fans have spoken 226-7 against Mullin!!

I wonder how different that poll would look if it was Corbin vs. Mullin, not Mullin vs. the field.

Mullin is nobodies first choice, but he might be our only choice.

I agree. This FO is going to see what a short leash feels like

Well Vivek has only been watching the NBA for a couple of seasons so the warriors are a powerhouse to him. In that time he has only seen the heat and spurs win titles, in his view only those type of teams win titles not this play hard defense ugly slow it down pound you inside jibberish that malone was preaching.

How the hell can he be our only choice when George Karl is on TV and radio begging for the job???
We don't know what Karl's demands are in salary or in control. One clip I heard from Karl said something a long the lines of "They will have questions to ask me, and I will have questions to ask them".

But that wasn't really my point, my point was that it might be Kings fans only choice, not PDA's. And choice is a bad word, because we aren't selecting the next coach, but for a midseason change it might be down to Mullin or Corbin, because they are both already here.

I still wouldn't want Mullin. What has he done as a coach? Why would you want to throw in someone with zero experience mid-season? The players deserve better.

PDA wont go for Karl, he wants a guy who will embrace his experiments and analytics. Karl is an old school type of guy with way more pedigree than PDA. He would never take suggestions from rookie GM PDA seriously.

You win championships with grit and defense, which is what they said Malone was. You get publicity with run/gun, flash, the first Indian player, and idiotic phrasing like "NBA 3.0"

Vivek's chosen his path. I choose mine. Boo the crap out of him and cheer twice as hard for Peja.

21-2.
As much as I hate to say it, they're a powerhouse. They're also currently the best defensive team in the game right now.
Yes our best chance at success is running the ball through the best big man in the game, but I do see where Vivek is coming from, even if I don't agree.

The only definite answer to fixing this is winning. I don't give a **** who is coaching this team just as long as my guys play their asses off every night and give us a chance to win.

Welp....
