IF…Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;

If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them ‘hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And- which is more- you’ll be a Man, my son !

Sonnet no.18William Shakespeare 1564 – 1616

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm’d,

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance or natures changing course untrimm’d:

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest,

Nor shall death brag thou wandrest in his shade,

When to eternal lines to time thou growest,

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see

So long lives this, and thi sgives life to thee.

How do I love thee ?Elizabeth Barrett Browning 1806 – 61

(Sonnets from the Portuguese)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of Being and idea Grace.

I love thee to the level of everyday’s

Most quiet need, by sun and candlight.

I love thee freely, as men strive for right;

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I love thee with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith,

I love thee with a love to lose

With my lost saints, - I love thee with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life! – and, if god choose,

I shall but love thee better after death.

LeisureWilliam Henry Davies 1871 – 1940

What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare,

No time to stand beneath the boughs

And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can

Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

JabberwockyLewis Carroll 1832 – 98

‘twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;

All mimsy were the borogoves,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

‘Beware the Jabberwock, my son!

The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!

Beware the Jubjub bird and shun

The frumious Bandersnatch!

He took his vorpal sword in hand:

Long time the manxome foe he sought –

So rested he by Tumtum tree,

And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,

The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,

Came whiffling through the tugley wood,

And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two ! And through and through

The vorpal blade went snicher-snack!

He left it dead, and with its head

He went galumphing back.

‘And thou hast slain the Jabberwock?

Come to my arms, my beamish boy!

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!

He chortled in his joy.

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves

Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;

All mimsey were the borogoves,

And the mome raths outgrabe.

If anyone is offended by the following, I should probably say I'm sorry. (I'm not, but it sounds good...)

My Five Favorite Insults:

1. Some people are like slinkeys. They aren't good for much but it's fun to watch them fall down the stairs.
2. He's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier.
3. If he was any dumber you could just stand him in the corner and water him twice a week.
4. He's dumb as a box of rocks and that's probably unfair to the rocks.
5. The combined IQ of a room drops by at least 10 points whenever he enters.

Unfortunately I work with a lot of people who fit into at least 4 of those categories.:eek: I'll definitely be using some of these.

My 5 favorite episodes from "Everybody Loves Raymond:

1. Series Finale - It made me cried and laughed. The finale show was brilliant.

2. Bad Moon Rising - Ray buys his wife PMS's medicine thinking that it could help her "womanly problems".
She looks at the bottle and asks him, "Does it cure bitchy?"
He says, "What?"
She says, "Does it cure bitchy, Ray."
Ray gets all nervous, "You probably need a prescription for that!"

3. Robert Date - Robert's entire demeanor changes when he starts clubbing with his patrol partner, Judy, and her friends. When he starts using expressions such as "This is so whack" and "I'm down with it" and showing up in mustard colored suits. LOL

4. Marie's Sculpture - Ray and Debra are horrified when Marie presents them with an abstract sculpture she made in art class which bears a striking resemblance to a part of the female anatomy.

5. The Angry Family

.....there are many more but I don't remember the name of the episode.

Top 5 Shows that never appealled to me but evidently did to alot of others:

1. American Idol
2. Survivor
3. Friends
4. Seinfeld
5. eVerybody Loves Raymond

My Five Favorite offensive units in Civ3:

1. War Elephant. No better than standard knights, the UU of the Indian Civilization is my favorite, simply because it's the strongest offensive unit in the game that can be built without any resources, which means that, even if you end up on a bad map, you can still wage a good war with the Indian nation.

2. Sipahi. The UU of the Ottomans is, quite simply, the strongest offensive unit that can be built by any civilization until the discovery of Replaceable Parts (Tank). And, if you have a big enough army of Sipahi, you can conquer the world way before you get that far.

3. Swordsman. Essential to pre-medieval war, as they are the strongest infantry unit that can be built before the discovery of Feudalism, and can easily defeat any pre-medieval defensive unit other than the Greek Hoplite.

4. Tanks. It should be self-explanatory.

5. Privateers. As a guy who likes to keep peace with nations that are not already on my continent, but wants to keep those nations from trying to colonize on my territory, I need a way to naval units headed my way, without causing an international incident... which is where Privateers come in. Basically government-sponsored pirates, Privateers are classified by the AI as having "no" nationality, which means that you can send them to sink rival nations boats that are getting to close to your borders, without having to declare war... Go Privateers!

Beatles:

1. Don't Let Me Down
2. Happiness Is A Warm Gun
3. Dear Prudence
4. Because
5. A Day In The Life

Funny that none of us had any repeats on our fave Beatles list.

VF, I like the "While My Guitar" acoustic version sans Eric Clapton best. Ever heard it?

I'm bored, so...I'll give out a couple of lists.

Top 5 tennis players
1) Pete Sampras. Best looking serve ever. Best running forehand ever. Incredible Smash Dunk. At his best completely dominant.
2) Roger Federer. Probably most complete player ever, so talented that he hits shots you've never seen before. Incredible touch, footwork and defense.
3) Michael Stich. Very complete and talented player, but was a bit of a headcase. Very smooth.
4) Stefan Edberg. Arguably the best volleyer ever (if not him, it's Johnny Mac). Aesthetically pleasing backhand. Ugly forehand though :)
5) Aleksandr Volkov. Couldn't make tennis look any easier than that. Amazing.

Top 5 video games from my childhood (well i still haven't grown up to be honest)
1) Super Mario Bros. Part 3 was better, but this was the one that started it all for me.
2) Super Mario Kart. Incredible fun with 2 players.
3) Super Metroid. I can't really explain this, but I've really grown attached to the Metroid Series.
4) Zelda III. I missed Zelda 1, this was the first one for me. Very special.
