It might have gone way off topic, but it makes a fair amount of sense.
It does make sense from our standpoint, but I'm convinced we can't make it happen. We've only got $5.3M now, so technically we're over the cap unless we renounce our MLE, which is like $5.8M.
That means that any way you look at it, $5.8M is the most we can offer Lee straight up, and he's known to be looking for more like $10M+. Despite the fact that his qualifying offer is only $2.7M, I wouldn't be surprised if he just took it and tried to cash in next year (like Ben Gordon did last year...and it worked out for him just fine at 5/$55M, thankyouverymuch). Unlike this year, there's some real cap space out there next summer (the whole LeBron sweepstakes thing) so Lee can be relatively sure that he'll find somebody to spend big $$ on him. Unless he can find someone to give him a one year MLE contract or a sign-and-trade for his desired $10M+, I think he'll just take the qualifying offer.
Anyway, the whole idea was: Sessions just signed an offer sheet for cheap, it would be a great idea to for us to sign Lee to an offer sheet for cheap. Agreed, but Lee won't do it. He either cashes in this year, or sets himself up to cash in next year. He simply won't be had for cheap unless it's a one year contract, and that doesn't help us. Or we could try to find a sign-and-trade that gives Lee $10M+, but I don't think that's particularly helpful to us, either.
