Well, Fernandez for cheap is better than Ferdinand at the max (guaranteed). Still, I guess they're happy with a starting PG who shoots less than 40% from the floor and averages five turnovers a game across the pond...

I remember watching her play, her game reminded me so much of Manu Ginobili in the NBA. She is a good shooter, but I believe her strength was creating off the dribble and driving to the basket. She was so "crafty" with her moves.

Maybe they should just throw in Penny Toler and let her play point, can't be worse than what they have now.

I don't think this works out for either team. It leaves LA completely exposed at PG. They're looking LESS like a championship caliber team in Lisa Leslie's final season! Meanwhile, this move is puzzling for Phoenix because they're putting a ball-dominant PG on a team with Cappie and Diana (two ball-dominant guards who don't need a PG to set them up).
 
I think Phoenix is on some sort of volume trades plan...not a single one of them has made sense to me on the face. I guess having a ballhandler BEHIND Pondexter and Taurasi is why they do this. Back away from the phone Ann...

From LA's perspective, Johnson's dust up with Cooper seemingly burned her bridge there, so I sorta understand why they move her. They can draft three more point guards this draft and call it good or go old school and bring Dixon or McCrimmon back....;)
 
If Phoenix doesn't get LJ, they are just one minor injury to Cappie or Diana from handling LA either Tina Charles/Jayne Appel/Monica Wright in 2010. Which works well, since Leslie is retiring.

Bad trade for both teams. Then again, never a fan of TJ. Cappie plays PG in Russia too, so not like its supe necessary to get her.
 
I get the sense that Ann Meyers doesn't know what she's doing. The 2010 draft will be deeper than the 2009 draft, and all she's doing is giving LA another rotation player.

Quite agree! Most of her recent moves as the Mercury's GM are puzzling to me. Unless, Lauren Jackson decides to sign with PHX, Anne Meyers seems to be helping the Sparks more than the Merc.

....unless she plans on leaving the Merc after the '09 season, and takes over Penny Toler as the Sparks G.M. for 2010! :eek:

But until then, that's the Mercury's problem. So, I'm fine with it. :D

UConn coach GENO AURIEMMA has been named the new coach of the U.S. National Women's team, taking over ANN DONOVAN. Auriemma will take over for the next three years, until the 2012 Summer Olympics ends. Auriemma became eligible to coach the Olympic team after the USA Basketball executive committee approved a rule change last month.

Previously, the Olympic head coaches were required to have WNBA coaching experience. Now the coach must only have five years experience as either an assistant or head coach at any level at the time of the selection.

I didn't necessarily say "better", just a lot of talent/names in LA-LA land already and to add Betty to that mix :eek:....for better or worse. I agree though, no PG and hopefully NO GM in the league is willing to send them a half-decent one so they have to stick with Lil Bit running the show.
 
Would've liked to see Betty play here, but oh well. LA should be a good team with her, but they will never be a great team unless they find an actual professional PG.
 
Stephanie Glance, the interim head coach at North Carolina State since the death of their former coach Kay Yow, is not likely to be named as the permanent full-time coach there. The school will announce a new head coach later on today.

News reports that the likely successor will be Kelly Harper, currently the coach at Western Carolina. Some of you might remember her as Kelly Jolly, the point guard of the Tennessee Lady Vols in the late-1990's, during the "Three Meeks" era (Tamika Catchings, Chamique Holdsclaw, and Semeka Randall).

I realize that N.C. State has lots of Yow loyalists, but the fact that the program has declined in the last several years --- mainly due to Yow's failing health, which hindered the ability to recruit talented youngsters --- was a big factor in the athletic director's decision to start with a new slate.
