Why didn't we get more for McGrady?

It's somewhat frustrating when McGrady goes off for 25 (I think) against the Knicks, and yet we seemed to give him up for nothing.

Maybe others don't mind, but it would have been nice to aquire a future 1st round pick, or a somewhat talented player in return.

Larry Hughes expires. Plus this whole thing probably wouldn't have gone down unless McGrady was involved.

We never had the rights to McGrady, and evidently didn't want them because of the salary we'd have had to pay for the rest of this season.

Supes is correct, we never had McGrady. If the rumors/tweets are to believed the chain of events went down like this:
NYK-HOU had deal but NY wouldn't agree to terms on the draft protection (they wanted more protection on their picks, HOU wanted nothing except a #1 exception).
The Kings jumped in with the Martin/K9 for Landry, Dorsey and McGrady deal and then figured they could trade McGrady to NY or someone else.
McGrady's agent said get a deal done with NY or we will cause problems with Reke down the road.
Kings and Knicks could not agree to a deal so they relented on Houston's terms and sent McGrady + Jeffries, Hill and pick + pick swap. K9 stayed in Sacramento and we got Hughes instead. Hughes + K9 expirings roughly equal McGrady's, so the rest of the deal stayed intact.

Couldn't throw K9 in, so if we had kept McGrady and not taken Hughes back, we'd have had his contract plus K9's $8 million. I'm not sure how much we saved, but it was probably at least $5 million for the rest of this season by not having McGrady plus other expiring contracts. And those savings go to the Maloofs, which might make them more willing to throw money around in subsequent years.

We waived him in order to make room on the roster for Dominic McGuire. He wasn't going to be playing anyway, and once the trade deadline loomed and it was obvious we wouldn't be using his contract in a trade, he was dead weight.

K9 -- Kenny Thomas? Free agent simply because his contract expires this summer. Or do you mean why hye was waived? Anyway. No more contract = free agent, which I'm sure you know, so I'm not sure what you are asking.

I dont think we really every had Tmacs rights, or we would have.

Whoever traded Tmac to the knicks was going to get that package, Houston had first dibs on it and they took it.

Houston took on a lot of risk so if it all pays off they deserve it.

But... Hill has to pan out and the Knicks have to continue sucking so the picks are good and Martin has to go back to the Martin that signed the contract extension not the Martin of late.

I'd say the odds are that 1 or 2 of those actually pan out, so decent trade that looks like a great one now.

Frankly that's what happened with the Artest trade too.

After a couple games it sounds like Houston is gonna miss Landry far more than we will miss Kmart. They gave up a vital piece of their front line and one of their more reliable 4th Quarter weapons when they are in the hunt for the 8th seed where every win counts.


Did we really want anything from NY though? What we really want from them they never had(Utah draft pick). Lee was never on the table, NY has alot of junk sooo much junk, we are really better off as a team as we still have capspace, our core in tact and have as many stupid contracts as we went in the trade with. The trade is a win win for me imo,I look at this trade pretty much Kmart for Landry and we will see how this looks next year rather than right now with 20+ games left in the season.
