Who do you want to coach the Kings next year?

1. Jerry Sloan- must take the chance of getting a hof coach, although boom or bust potential.
2. Budenholzer- good SA background, smart, boom or bust of a different kind. Chance to grow with the team.
3. JVG- will take the team to the next level and improve the D
4. McMillan- experience, seems like the kind of coach who can take another step
5. SVG- will build around the stars and take team to the next level, while being mildly annoying

my vote goes to SVG. i think he might have what it takes to get this team on track. i'm not a fan of JVG & Nate.. both of em are walk it up court offenses. i don't know if i can watch boring basketball for years on end lol

indeed. lead assistant under Pop and apparently the one responsible for practices and the like as well.

Hell NO to SVG. Some won't forget or forgive what he did last time. That set the franchise back big time.
Elston Turner is still high on my list. He's had several interviews for jobs the past few years and got screwed in Phoenix this year.

wasnt smart an assistant under Pop at one time? I think this team needs a proven big name tough guy who can whip these young guys into shape and demand accountability and respect.
I dont think this is the type of roster that would respond well to an assistant going thru his first go around as the lead man, they need a SVG/JVG, Jerry Sloan, Larry Brown, Nate, type to get them going.
If the owners REALLY wanted make a splash they would go after Calipari since we have 3 of his former players anyway.

I'd also be super interested in Cal. Brad Stevens is a great college coach also, and Fred Hoiberg is being dubbed as the next great college - to - NBA coach.
We'll see. There are GOOD candidates out there, though.

Our two best players/hopes for the future are Cousins and Tyreke. We are the worst defensive team in the league, again, and have been awful for half a decade on that side.
Jeff Van Gundy is the coach of Ewing and Sprewell, of Yao and TMac. He is one of the league's preeminent defensive coaches, loves big shotblockers, loves centers. Kings fans have this icky subcurrent of all I wanna see is free flowing offense, even if we lose. That's not him. But in all other ways he's he perfect choice to turn this around and maximize what we got.
McMillan is a less proven version of the same concept. He's the coach of Aldridge and Roy. He too loves big shotblockers and defense. He too runs a slug it out offense. If JVG sticks to broadcasting or is truly an East Coast guy (I've always thought so, but his childhood connections to California give me hope), then McMillan is next on the just makes sense list.
We won't lead the league in scoring after the All Star break with either of those guys, but give them a little time and we'll be top 10 defensively, and we'll maximize whatever we have in Cousisn and Evans.
P.S. and oh, and yes to Kingjatt's Calipari mention -- I have thought/noted the same thing now with Patterson here. Thing is there is no guarantee it would work -- Calipari tried the NBA once before and did not get it done. But with three of his former players here, two of them the franchise cornerstones, if ever there was a logical time for him to try again, this might be it. Of course should note the guy who he's always followed in my mind was Rick Pitino, who in his second NBA stint took over Boston and tried to largely recruit too many of his own former Kentucky players, with his Kentucky college system, and ended up tanking spectacularly. Comparatively there is no risk with a JVG. He has won, can win in the NBA, and you know it for 100% sure, no specualtion.

no disagreement here. I just included him because he's the biggest name in the "good assistant ready to make the jump" category (and Elston Turner's name had escaped me). my favourite would be Stan van Gundy, for those reasons:

well, there is an "Other" option, which is basically the same thing and I actually thought about adding Jackson, but just couldn't do it.

I wish we could have Adelman back....But then again, we have a different roster now, one not exactly suited to his style.

I think Calapari would be a bit of a gamble, however, he does fit the halfcourt scheme. He'll pick and roll you to death. He runs a dribble drive offense that has some of the players moving all the time, but he tends to leave his center at the hub of his offense. He's also a coach that stresses defense, and for the most part, has had very good defensive teams. The downside to Calapari is that he's a get in your face coach, which young players right out of college are somewhat used to, but veteran players have a problem with. Since the Kings are a very young team, and three of them have played for Calapari in the past, it might just work.
Having said all that, I really really doubt you could intice him away from Kentucky. He has the best recruiting class in maybe the entire history of college basketball coming in next season, he's looked at as a god there, and he's making big bucks as well. Sometimes its better to be a big fish in a small pond, than a small fish in a big pond.

I don't know about making a splash or not. Maybe that will be important to Vivek; maybe not. But I very much think that he will be looking for someone very intelligent as his coach. A guy who is as smart as he is isn't going to hire someone with a mediocre mind for the game.

Phil would be a big splash. he'd definitely have the pieces to run the triangle here. if anybody could do some mind games with our big man cornerstone.. it'd be phil. jimmer could be the next steve kerr

Well if he wants a very smart coach thats excellent of getting the most out of what he has, and he wants a college coach, then as suggested above, Brad Stevens would be a great choice. As a matter of fact, if not for the Kings, I would hope that UCLA would be beating on his door for next season. The guy continues to make the NCAA tournament year after year with players that no one has heard of. He has a great basketball mind, and has the abiltiy to sell his players on the system he runs.

Jerry Sloan turns 71 on Thursday. I don't see him coaching anything but a contender. How many more years can he realistically have in him. Plus he basically quit because of how players act now. Put him as the coach of DMC and THIS team? No chance, as much as I think we need a coach like him.
