Who are the players in freeagency:

I went team by team and looked at their commited rosters for next season, and the amout of money they had available to spend. Rather than cover the teams over the projected cap for next season, I'm starting with teams that have more than the Mid-level excemption and above available. Bear in mind that teams over the cap would still have the mid-level, somewhere between 5 and 6 mil available to them.

So I'll start with the teams with the least amount of money and work my way toward the teams with the most. I'm also lising each teams freeagents of note, which in many, if not most cases, will take up a significant chunk of their capspace to resign.


Nuggets: Available capspace - $6,612,687.00. Freeagents: Andre Miller (unrestricted), Javale McGee (restricted), Rudy Fernandez (restricted).

You can judge for yourself which teams will be big players and which won't. I'm also sure that some of these teams, such as the Kings, still retain their amnesty clause. I'm not going to make any predictions, other than I doubt a team like the Spurs will let Duncan walk after all these years, and the Nets, who have a lot of capspace could use almost all of it resigning their own players. If Deron Williams wants to stay, he could help them by not opting out of his contract.

The Kings only have one freeagent, Thompson, that they'll try and resign. Its a little tricky though. By extending him a qualifying offer, they make him a restricted freeagent. However, until his situation is resolved, there's a cap hold put in place that would use up a huge chunk of their total capspace. A way around that, would be to relinquish his rights, making him an unrestricted freeagent. But because you still hold his bird rights, you could offer more money than anyone else and go over the cap to do so.

Of course, being unrestricted, he could turn down the offer and sign with someone else.

I don't think that's correct. I don't see the issue addressed directly in the Larry Coon FAQ, but they appear to be two unique things. What you give up when allowing a player to become unrestricted is the "right of first refusal" - the right to match a contract offered by another team and keep the player against the player's wishes to join the other team. Bird rights allow a team to exceed the salary cap to sign their own free agent, which is different. Bird rights can be renounced to clear the cap hold that comes along with them, but that's a separate transaction. I don't see any indication that not tendering a qualifying offer inherently renounces Bird rights.

7M is starter money. JT is a borderline. I'd offer 5/25 and tell his agent if he thinks he's worth more to go sign an offer sheet and we'll likely match. Done and we won't pay over market value.


Back to the OP, it looks like we'd have another decent shot at AK if we wanted it. New Jersey won't have the room unless they whiff on resigning their own FA.

Wonder what the Celtics are going to do with all that cap space. They have a great shot at making it to the Eastern Conference Finals now with Chicago out. Will they blow it up or extend KG and Ray Allen another year or two to keep those guys together?

I'm becoming more and more on board with going after Hawes and Ersan Ilyasova over resigning JT. I love the progress JT made this season, but I feel like all 3 guys will cost basically the same price and Ersan is a better player on both ends than JT and Hawes is that defensive presence that we're missing in the post. Better yet, both guys are interchangeable with Cousins and we can effectively play to match-ups. If we luck out with MKG in the redraft and resign T-will on the cheap, our off-season becomes pretty damn successful.

You'd probably have a hard time selling folks on Hawes around here. But I watched the game last night, and its amazing to watch him now, as compared to when he was here. He's playing very well, and stays involved on both ends of the floor. He recognizes the double quickly, and makes very nice passes out of it. He's turned into a very nice center in the league. Amazing what a little coaching will do.

I also watched the Laker game. Of course the result warmed my heart, but mostly I was watching to get another good look at McGee. So my wish is, for everyone that wants this guy, take time out of your evening to watch him play. He has no offense to speak of, and is totally lost at times on defense. He is the champion of allowing the backdoor play. For every shot he blocks, he's a spectator on ten other plays. Last night I watched him block out his man on the left side of the basket, thereby clearing the lane for a Laker player to go straight to the basket while he watched. I'm sorry, he just doesn't have a clue about how to play the game. And folks, he's not a rookie! There still may be hope for him under a coach with a strict system, but he'll never be Marcus Camby. Right now, Whiteside has more BBIQ than McGee does, and thats saying a lot.

Hawes on the other hand has become a top 15 C with a chance to improve. At the very least , he can be a 12-7-3-1.5 with elite defense. He would be an ideal fit if we believe Cousins can last at PF.

Fields was one of the surprises in the draft two years ago. Of course for anyone that watched him play at Stanford, it wasn't that big a surprise. He reminds me some of Battier. Not in overall style of play, or ability, but in effectiveness. He's one of those guys thats not great at anything, but he's good at just about everything. He can handle the ball. He's a very good passer. He's a good shooter, although his outside shot has fell off a little this season. And he's a good defender. He won't stand out in a game like Tyreke will. But usually the man he's guarding doesn't either. He's a perfect example of a great support player. He'll get you 8 to 10 points, grab you some boards, get a couple of assists, a steal or two, and just play solid defense. I've always thought he was better at the SG position, but thats just me. He can play both positions

True story that has nothing to do with basketball...last Fall during the lockout I was over in Carlsbad CA and stopped in a Starbucks. Paid for a drink with a gift card and apparently I was 4 cents short of the total after the gift card was used up. I had no cash on me and told the cashier he could run my card for 4 cents thinking he'd tell me not to worry about it. Cashier asked for my card. Guy behind me says - "I gotcha...don't worry about it" and gave the cashier a few pennies. Turn around and it is Doug Collins in a 76ers shirt. Chatted a little and thanked him. Very cool guy!

Maybe good coaching has something to do with it? I don't think he would have made those improvements if he still was in this team. The only real good free agent we need is a real coach.
