Now that some dust has settled for time being on the Kings Arena/Cal Expo gigantic proposed project... where will the team be around 2-3+ years from now? This poll is just an educated guess or maybe your an amateur Nostradamus...

I used to be known as KF.com's official prognosticator. :D

I chose Sacramento. There is not a doubt in my mind.

Up until maybe Nov 08 I too would have selected Sacramento and will always wish they stay. The Kings and the Maloof's have been fantastic for the city and local area.

Unfortunately, the current economic climate may not bottom out until early 2010 with major development funding taking some time after that to become a Phoenix (the bird, not the city) forcing the arena issue out to 2013-14 or later (4-5 years from now). Can the Maloof's, no matter how strong their desire to stay, afford to stay in the old digs that long? Two years of bottom dwelling (08-09 and 09-10) before the "kids" should breakout and get the Kings to the playoffs doesn't help in the current fund raising climate either.

It is grand the Expo board approved 7-2 the overall plan presented by the NBA. A first step for sure. When a developer, who will be expected to fork up $500M+, is signed up and put his money on the line then we can say the "Arena is a Go!" Right now the plans are accepted by the expo board but nothing will likely happen for 1-2 years until funding is in hand. That is the reality of the situation.

I will not be an Ostrich and put my head in the sand whenever the realities of a new arena are raised. Rather I want to see all the situation and focus on the areas that would be most helpful in getting a developer on board the soonest.

Sacramento..

The arena moved slow, but it looks like there is the light we have been waiting for at the end of the tunnel and the Kings should be staying here.

Even IF the Kings moved, we would keep the name, and once the Arena is done we will have a new team called the Sacramento Kings. Also, at least we will be rid of Beno's contact :D

Sanders Worried About Losing Chiefs, Royals

I think everyone excited about KC may want to read this.....they may not be able to keep the teams they have.

http://www.kmbc.com/money/18866748/detail.html

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders said he's concerned the Chiefs and Royals could leave Kansas City because of the city's budget proposal.

Kansas City has an $85 million budget shortfall that has to be fixed by the end of the month.

Thursday, Mayor Mark Funkhouser put forward his plan, which includes eliminating nearly $2 million the city gives each year to the Truman Sports Complex.

"This came with no notice to us. We were unaware that this was even going to be an issue," Sanders said in a KMBZ radio interview. "The money would be the violation. But the fact that we would have violated a substantive provision would mean those leases are now gone … We would be on a tightrope or a high wire with no safety net."

Sanders said if the city pulls its $2 million annual contribution, it would break the lease and leave the city with no written guarantee keeping the Royals and Chiefs in Kansas City for the long term.

"The teams would then be, to use the sports phrase, free agents to do whatever they wanted to do. Re-negotiate the deal or to not honor any of the provisions of the lease they did not want to honor," Sanders told KMBC's Martin Augustine.

"I don't think it would jeopardize leases," Funkhouser said. "We're trying to focus on services that directly matter to Kansas Citians. For example, our city services, basic services like police. That is a core function. Operating a sports venue is not."

Sanders said he believes the issue will eventually be worked out. He called the Royals and Chiefs "good civic partners."

A Royals representative said team officials are just learning about the issue, and it's too early to comment.

KMBC was unable to get a comment from a Chiefs representative.

The teams arent leaving, its the mayor being an idiot politican which he is. Another thing the city doesnt own or operate the Sports Complex that is the County's baby. But they do own the Sprint Center, but it seems Kansas City is looking at hockey more lots of noise about the Islanders.

I seriously doubt we'd keep the name. The Royals/Kings go all the way back to Rochester, NY and have seen several moves. Seattle was able to keep the name Sonics (originally Supersonics), because that's where the franchise originated as an expansion team and the name has an association with the Seattle area (aircraft industry).

Ironically, Seattle is the county seat of "King County" Washington and a well known area for the fish - King Salmon. If "the Kings" ever moved there maybe they would prefer that name over their old one. What would really be confusing is having NHL LA Kings and NBA Anaheim Kings in the same market if that ever became reality.

I bet he got elected because of that name. Funkhouser? Awesome. :p

After the PR disaster that was the 2007 All-Star game, I don't see Las Vegas getting an NBA team any time soon. The NBA is still pretending that weekend never happened.

A blip from a Bee article

http://www.sacbee.com/sports/story/1708635.html

The arena issue is out there – maybe way out there – but the family intends to persevere and would consider other local sites again if the Cal Expo proposal fails. And there are no plans to sell or move the Monarchs, either. (Colleen Maloof has a particular affinity for the 2005 WNBA champions.)

"This is where we belong," Joe Maloof said when pressed, "but I'd rather stay away from that because I don't consider that the No. 1 issue anymore. Right now we have to get fans back in Arco Arena. Bring back the anticipation. Then we gain momentum for everything else."

The Bee today (23 April 09) discussed the beginnings of the railyard "makeover" (Sacramento railyard makeover finally in motion) ="http://www.sacbee.com/topstories/story/1802531.html"
with crews laying the base for 3 roads and 2 bridges in what developers say will be the biggest urban infill project in the country. A formal groundbreaking is set for today.

More interesting tho' is two statements in the article:

But it's counting on tens of millions of dollars in promised state infrastructure bond funds to keep the project on track, and more in city and federal funds this year.

State officials recently began selling bonds to finance projects. The railyard was identified Wednesday among the California projects that will receive their promised funding; however, state finance officials said that money won't start flowing for at least a month.

The bonds and possible federal "infrastructure" funds would add a new and hopeful element to an arena plan for the railyard area. It would be the major transportation hub for northern california and the local area facilitating easier (and cheaper) access to an arena located there.

A small tidbit of hope for the downtown railyard site for a Kings arena.

Possibly. I know an arena was taken out of the plans, so who knows how that changes the infrastructure they are about to begin putting in. To me, they are still a long way from actually constructing any buildings. I do think I read earlier that the city may have gotten the funds to move the RR station. My guess is the transportation hub is first priority.

To quote Bob Hope. " The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated ". My wife and her friend Norma cross the border every wednsday for a dog rescue group we have down here. Along with thousands of other people without incident. The truth is that there are probably more people murdered in Los Angeles every night than there is in TJ.. That doesn't make for big news though.

The biggest crime in Mexico is thievery. My fishing buddy Omar told me once, that in mexico, if you leave something setting in the same place for more than 2 hours, you must not want it. So their not really stealing it, there just helping you by relieving you of the responsibility of taking it to the dump.
