What would you want the arena to look like?

Sounds cool, but probably won't happen to that extent. It's going to be a multi-purpose as well as Kings arena. Assuming it ever gets built, if Kings fans are not happy with the final design I guess we could protest by painting the gold colored bear standing at the entrance to Cal Expo for decades - PURPLE!

That would really add fuel to the fire of all the anti-arena people who didn't want to pay for "just" a Kings arena.
I think the point is to push the multi-purpose angle as a necessary forum for all forms of entertainment in Sacramento.
But I suppose that doesn't matter now since it's in the hands of the state. Aside from that ... I think a giant castle would look rather tacky. It's an NBA Arena, not Chuck E. Cheese.
It would only be used for Kings games approximately 15% of the time.
My only real hope for a new arena is that it will retain the flavor of the old arena while encompassing the current and future needs.

A castle looking arena? Wow that would look really really bad IMO. Besides Kings only would use the arena about 50 to 60 dates a year, a typical arena hosts over 150 events in a year.
I agree. Vegas - and cheesy. There's a castle in Fairytale Town. I don't think we need another one.
Oh, lord have mercy. There's an artist rendering - which I have to suspect upinsmoke saw somewhere yesterday - being shown on Ch. 3 as I type. It's a giant castle-looking structure complete with turrets at each corner and massive pennants with the Kings logo.
That sucks, plan and simple - but there's NO indication whatsoever that's what the new arena would look like. It appears as though it may have been done by the same guy (it's in the same style) as the conceptual drawing of the "railyard" arena.

I think the Cal Expo arena should resemble a Giant Tomato! 
It will celebrate the central valley's agricultural history, play off the nickname "The Big Tomato" and easily be the most recognizable arena in the league.
Plus no one could accuse it of being soley a Kings arena.
We even have a prototype with an artist rendition of the I-5 water tower:

Nope i just thought it would be different.
I'd like to see something forward-thinking which emphasizes green architecture and/or natural landscapes. The new Nets arena is moving in that direction -- it's got a public garden on the roof.
Especially since the plan now is to renovate Cal Expo, this becomes less about having a high-tech downtown entertainment complex and more about emphasizing the natural beauty of the region. Do something that incorporates the American River parkway, maybe involving a natural garden or wildlife refuge. Externally the building should use the latest in sustainable architecture principles to take advantage of natural heating and light. An emphasis on public transportation with bike trails and a new light rail station. This would set an example for other cities as well as an excellent concept for redesigning Cal Expo. California wants to be a leader in renewable energy, so transitioning our state fair grounds from a more traditional rural countryside model to a modern example of healthy and sustainable engineering would be a nice symbolic gesture and maybe give Sacramento something to brag about, something to define it's identity around.
As for the inside of the arena, I think we all pretty much want the same thing -- somehow make the arena bigger while retaining the intimate feel and loud volume of Arco.

Actually the Maloofs have stated they don't want the size to be much bigger than the current arena, as far as numer of available seating. I think they said maybe 18,000. They definitely want to keep it as close to intimate as Arco.
I definitely agree on a green building, as much as possible. Since it is on the river, it would be nice to incorporate that into the design theme. They did that a little bit at the airport terminal A. The concourse flooring and the art piece I love is Gregory Kondos' stained glass at the front that represents the trees along the riverbank/levee.
At least the landscaping could echo the riparian habitat along the river.

I actually like it to have some features that are presented in the Nets arena. That looks pretty cool with the garden on the roof. I think they also need to extend the light rail into Cal Expo and allow that line to continue into Sac State. That would actually make transportation a lot more friendlier and a variety of ways to get to the arena, which would eventually decrease the traffic over near Cal Expo-Arden area.

Agreed. Outside looks are not that important to me; I'm sure the design would be modern and not a plain warehouse or ultra-funky style. I also wouldn't mind something kinda retro-looking, either, as long as the amenities and access and comfort is there.

Yeah, whatever the design, I would like to see something that becomes a permanent landmark in the area. I know costs are going to be a big issue, as it always is with stadiums and arenas. Still, I would rather see something that is designed to last a very long time this time around. In fact, build it with the likelihood of renovation years down the road already in mind so that the building can adapt to changing times without having to be torn down.

Ditto. I really don't care what it looks like, let's just get it done. Whatever will get it approved and ground broken will be just fine with me. Get it done, keep the Kings in town, I'm happy.
