what was the last movie you watched?

Watched Underwater on HBO Max on the weekend. It was ok. I mean, there just isn’t anything new out right now and it was some underwater/thriller/action stuff going on but I’m not a fan of Kristen Stewart. Sigh. Could use a good sci-fi flick I haven’t seen.

I haven't seen Kick-Ass since it came out on video, and can't find it anywhere for free right now. Frankly, I don't remember much of the plot at all. But Kick-Ass 2 was on recently so I just watched that. Eh - not that great, and not as good as I remember the original being. I do appreciate that they provide just enough backstory so I kinda knew what was going on. But it could have been a bit better.

The Dirty Harry series is on HBO Max and aside from the first one, which is still a solid hardboiled cop movie, the rest of the movies have not aged well, not that they were particularly good in the first place. Also, Eastwood clearly starts phoning it in midway through the second movie.

Speaking of that, someone mentioned watching all the Bond movies all the way through and I've been thinking of doing that at some point. I've seen most of them at some point, but I know there are also some I have missed. Last night I caught the end of You Only Live Twice from a Sean Connery movie series some channel had on (after finishing up Kick-Ass 2 on the DVR) and let me tell you, that movie didn't age well either.

What should have won instead of Million Dollar Baby?
Oops. I missed this. Looking back, this wasn’t as egregious as I remember. Of those nominated I only own Aviator and Finding Neverland, so I’m guessing my preference was one of those, but I’m not sure how hard I’d argue for either over Million Dollar Baby at this point. Like someone else mentioned though, Eternal Sunshine would have been my ultimate pick from the year.

Watched The New Mutants the other night. Total disaster. Was actually angered by its awfulness. It felt like a movie that was pitched by someone with a vision but then the studio got cold feet halfway through and tried to hack it into something else entirely, resulting in a giant pile of nothing.

I’m a little bitter.

That was me.

Also, the first Kick Ass was great, the second was crap.

I have the Dirty Harrys on Blu-Ray, I could watch those. I loved them as a kid but they are dumb.

I wanted to catch this one at first, but the reviews have been horrendous. Unfortunate. I don't like horror movies in general, but with the Marvel attachment and my liking of The Boys as a pretty violent superhero "alternative" approach, I was hoping this would be a crossover hit.

If it comes out on Dish somewhere for free I'll catch it anyways, but thanks for the heads-up.

Just finished up Casino, and I was underwhelmed. Pretty predictable stuff, and like The Irishman, much longer than it needed to be.
It has some quotable stuff and if you've ever worked in a casino or spent hours upon hours in them it's got some cool things in it but otherwise it's a rehash of his better movies.

So it's been a couple of weeks since I've seen Tenet (movie theaters have been open in Japan for a couple of months now) and I'm still not quite sure what to make of it.

As sheer cinema spectacle, it's undeniably great but as an actual narrative that makes sense, I'm not sure it works. Nolan is undeniably one of the best "big" action directors working today but with all of his post Inception work, it almost always seems like he's more devoted to showing how clever he is than really depicting characters doing things in a way that would make you care. Although I suppose that if Warner Brothers were giving me a unlimited budget and leeway, I too would find a way to shoehorn in an actual 747 wreck into my movie. Ken Brannaugh continues his return to showbiz as a character actor with an almost unrecognizable turn as the bad guy (I know I'm not one to talk but the years have certainly done a number on him). Also John David Washington's line readings occasionally sound uncannily like his dad.

The first Harry Potter was on after wrasslin’ last week. It was so very stupid, but I couldn’t pull my eyes away.
I lent these to a lady I dated so her kids could watch (sometime after we stopped seeing each other) but now I'm afraid to ask for them back because I haven't seen her in forever and don't feel like small talk and we're in a pandemic.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation obviously.

30 years watching the same movie after Thanksgiving, yet never knew Rusty is played by Johnny Galecki of Roseanne / Big Bang Theory fame.

I can recite this movie scene-for-scene, but took my wife to figure out that little fact while halfheartedly glancing at the screen from over her phone. Apparently she can do this simply because she "knows faces"

Having just talked about Fincher's genius in a previous post, it pains me to say that I didn't really enjoy Mank as much as I wanted to. I realize that making his dad's long caught-up-in-bureaucracy script was a bit of a passion project for him but this didn't necessarily feel like, I dunno, the best use of a director like David Fincher's talents.

I was excited at first then a little let down after the trailer. Still will probably watch

Harold and Kumar’s Christmas Movie in 3D
Yes I watched it again and yes, I think it’s funny as hell. Neil Patrick Harris is a hoot.
I watched this on this weird headset contraption I have years ago, now that I have a 3D screen in my basement I think I will give this a go later this week! I forgot I have a copy on the shelf :)

We watched Kingsmen 2 The Golden Circle this weekend. I think it's pretty fun although Sam Jackson's baddie in the first movie is better. This was the second time I had watched these. I look forward to the third installment.

Was reading up on upcoming movies for December and this article was talking about HBO Max possibly going to release new movies on the streaming service the same day it’s going to release movies to the theaters. I know that Wonder Woman 1984 is doing exactly that on Christmas Day but then the article was stating expect more movies to do this.

I hope this isn’t speculation and this actually happens. The thought was that HBO wants to be a mega heavy in the streaming service and this would do the trick.

Pretty sure that they said they have confirmed the entire 2021 release calendar to open day and date with theatrical release (and if you owned theater stock, surprise, it took a dive immediately afterwards last week).

Yep, for Warner Brothers, including Matrix 4, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the new Dune movie (in addition to WW 1984). Those are some big flicks to do that with, but maybe they just feel like they don't have a choice at this point?

Warner Bros. will release all of its new 2021 movies simultaneously on HBO Max - The Verge

I don't think that I have seen either of the first two XXX movies, but just watched the third, XXX: Return of Xander Cage. I doubt I missed much if the third is any representation of the first two. Very little substance wrapped up in a whole bunch of silliness. o_O
Remember the stunt with the red Corvette going off the Auburn Ravine bridge? That was in the beginning of XXX.
