Watched "Up in the Air" last night. Enjoyable movie and good performance by Clooney. Probably not for everyone, but I liked it.

And just got done seeing "How to Train your Dragon" - our 7-year old loved it. Predictable but very cute and entertaining. We really enjoyed it. Did not see it in 3D, seems like it would play well that way though if you are so inclined.

Law Abiding Citizen -- This one was loads of fun in a living room full of somewhat rowdy folks, but I don't think I would have enjoyed it in any other viewing situation. Whatever that means. Too over the top to have any chance of being as good as it thinks it is, but so ridiculous that it lends itself perfectly to shouting at the screen.

Brothers -- Hard to explain my reaction to this one. It felt different than I expected going in, even though it was exactly the movie I thought it would be. When this one came out, the reviews all said that the acting was the big reason to see this one, and I would have to agree even though I though Tobey Maguire (who received much of the acclaim) was laughably over-the-top at times. Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal were both quite good, though. And subtle. Also, I generally can't stand child actors, but the two little girls who play Portman's daughters were excellent.

"Event Horizon". It originally was in theaters in 1997. It stars the guy from Jurassic Park and Lawrence Fishburne. It makes you believe its going to be a sci-fi/space movie, what it ends up being is a disturbing horror movie. Some of the imagery is really gruesome and just...sick. This movie totally took me by surprise. Its definitely worth watching if youre a fan of the horror genre.

Tremendous potential in the setup, but I thought like many of those it kind of lost control down the stretch.

As an aside, you might like to check out Pandorum or Sunshine for somewhat similar feels/setups (even if the payoffs are different, and all not quite satisfying in their own right).

Still waiting all these years later for another movie to execute the spooky setup/isolation/paranoia ending as well as Alien & The Thing did 30 years ago now. Have pondered if maybe that was just it -- if we as humans have certain instinctual fears and maybe they were tapped so directly in those older movies that it didn't really leave room for a much more direct hit. Still I check them all out hoping.

I watched Toy Story and Surrogates last night.

First time I'd actually seen Toy Story, was interesting to compare to the later Pixar output, obviously not as detailed but by 1995 standards absolutely amazing. Kind of wish I had seen this back then. I think the sequel is the last remaining Pixar film that I have yet to see and I have that on the bookshelf.

Surrogates was a lot better than I thought it would be. The set up required a bit of suspension of disbelief but inside its own universe the story worked well. It was only 90 minutes so it didn't really waste much time which is kind of a turn off to the sci-fi geek but refreshing from the standpoint that I didn't have to stay up until 2am to watch something that wasn't a comedy. Surrogate Bruce Willis was kind of creepy looking. I think it was the hair.

Just seen Kick-*** this morning... wow. What a bad *** film this is.

Best I could describe it would be Superbad meets Sin City with a little Tarantino mixed in there. Absolutely loved it. Funny as hell, the action is top notch and the story is engaging. Highly recommended!!!

(p.s. This movie is violent as hell. Definitely not for the faint of heart.)

I think I gotta see this Kick-***. Though I'll probably just buy it when it comes out. There was a review in one of the alt-weeklies that appeared to be a negative review but the whole time I was thinking "Hey, this sounds cool".

I saw This Movie Has Not Been Rated last night. Well most of it, dozed off at the end as it was way too late/early this morning. Will have to revisit the final half hour. Kind of funny watching the PI scenes, particularly when they went to Islands. I used to go to that one quite a bit myself.

I haven't been paying attention to the critical response, but can attest to it being a thoroughly enjoyable movie experience. Easily the most spontaneous laughter/clapping/"holy ****"-ing I've heard from an audience (and myself) since Inglorious Basterds.

I watched "W." last night. Pretty interesting. I wonder, without doing any additional research into the movie and actual history, how much of that stuff really happened, how much was exaggerated, and how much was totally made up. Still, it was something I had been wanting to see for a while, and it kept me intrigued. Not a popcorn flick, obviously, but alright for a Tuesday night after a two-day hangover.

Did either of you see the original Bad Lieutenant? The new one got some scathing commentary from Abel Ferrara who directed the original and considers this to be something of an unauthorized remake or sequel.

Picked up Avatar today but didn't get to watch it. Supposed to be the new standard of excellence for Blu-Rays.
I am waiting until the November (?) release that will have all the extras and possibly a director's cut and the 3D version on it.

Same reason I haven't bought Lord of the Rings - I want the extended cuts not the theatrical release.

I normally do that too and am holding off on LotR but I think the 3D release is actually going to be a 3rd release next year so I figured I'd get this and then see what comes down (and also whether or not 3D projectors are practical when I upgrade my system next year).

I have The Spirit and haven't watched it too, was in the cheapo bin at Costco.

It's April, dude. I'm too impatient to wait until November. I'll have it this afternoon.

Yeah, but I saw it twice in the theater (once 3D, one not) and a friend has an "academy awards" copy I can watch if need be. :p

I am just tired of companies coming out with better versions later so when a "plain Jane" version of a blockbuster movie comes out you know a better version will be released before too long.

Besides, there is always Netflix or Blockbuster if you just can't wait that long. ;)

Is the copy in the original aspect ratio? Apparently Cameron decided to open up the Blu-Ray (and DVD I presume) to fill a 16:9 screen for the current release. So that screener may actually have some value for purists (that is if you can get past the constant reminders that its a screener and not to copy it :p).

I don't watch most special features so odds are I really just saved money, unless I opt for a 3D copy down the road.

The wife loooooves special features, and the behind the scenes stuff for this movie is gonna be intriguing, to say the least. They ran a half-hour special on SciFi channel a couple months ago, which really whet the appetite, so I'll be getting the heavy duty copy when it comes out.

For right now, though, I really wanna pop this sucker in my Bluray player and just enjoy.

I am interested in watching the VFX techie stuff but only because a few friends actually made the round the world move to New Zealand to work on it and don't shut up about it, but I don't really need to own all that fluff particularly if it is going to come at a price premium. I got BB to match Target's price and got my reward zone points and so I'm happy waiting to find out just how many special editions come out and for Amazon to rock bottom the price (so probably Christmas 2011).
