What is taking so long with Bonzi?

I don't understand the hold-up here, Bonzi stated he wanted to play here and to play anywhere else like Detroit he would be coming off the bench and play for less money..ditto in Indiana.

Something has go to give here..

It's only July 6.

His agent is going to do his job, and make sure Bonzi has at least considered any and all other offers. (There is always the chance there haven't been any other bona fide offers, Phillip's posturing notwithstanding...)

Petrie made an offer; Phillips quickly countered. Now it is pretty much a waiting game. If there aren't any other offers out there, Petrie is clearly in the driver's seat and doesn't have to act quickly on Phillip's counter-proposal. If there are, however, other offers, they either involve MLE or a sign-and-trade. Once again, Petrie is in the driver's seat.

At least that's my take on the whole situation thus far...

I'm pretty confident Bonzi will stay. It looks like most teams that planned on spending their money have done so, so the only choices left are take the MLE from a good team and probably come off the bench or take the Kings offer and get to be a major part of a good team (whose got quite a fanbase for you now too). With Ben Wallace leaving Detroit and how they fell apart in the post season, benching for Detroit is looking a lot less interesting. Denver could still really use him, but he would have to squeeze in with the egos of Melo and Kenyon Martin (if they can't move him... which they probably can't because his contract in crazy and he is a drama bomb himself). I think the Kings can offer Bonzi a touch above the MLE, something like his last contract, and it would be a fair offer and a good place for him to stay.

That said, I don't think Kings fans would be totally crushed if he left. Kevin Martin is panning out really well and making him the team's true starter could prove to be a great thing. I'd hate to lose a talent like Bonzi, but I would be excited to watch Martin play.

I bet the offer was more than a "touch" above as the MLE is what, about $5 mil? His last contract was for about $8 mil. That's 60% more than the MLE. A bit more than a "touch"....

I am not concerned at all. I am sure the details are being talked over right now. And Bricks right, Bonzi is the kind of player that could easily be an important part of our team through his entire contract. He isn't going to get smaller any any less tough over night.

Raps- already have their own Bonzi-type in PJ Tucker)

off topic..man, I am high on Tucker and was a fan of his game here at UT but i'm not sure his game will translate to the nba in that comparison. i sure would love it though. He could only be so lucky to be as successful as Bonzi.

There really isn't any reason to be concerned right now. Unless Bonzi decides to take less money to play for another team, we're in good shape. Personally, I don't believe Bonzi will sign for less somewhere else. It's not as if he's a last gasp veteran trying to get a ring, who would take the LLE to help the Spurs or Heat.

There really are not any other teams with signfigant cap space who are going after Bonzi. Therefore, we're either going to sign him or sign-and-trade him. Considering Petrie is one of the top GMs in the league, I wouldn't be concerned, we're going to get value.

TIME IS ON MY SIDE
(Meade)
Time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is
Now you always say
That you want to be free
But you'll come running back (said you would baby)
You'll come running back (I said so many times before)
You'll come running back to me
Oh, time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is
You're searching for good times
But just wait and see
You'll come running back (I won't have to worry no more)
You'll come running back (spend the rest of my life with you, baby)
You'll come running back to me
Go ahead, go ahead and light up the town
And baby, do everything your heart desires
Remember, I'll always be around
And I know, I know
Like I told you so many times before
You're gonna come back, baby
'Cause I know
You're gonna come back knocking
Yeah, knocking right on my door
Yes, yes!
Well, time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is
'Cause I got the real love
The kind that you need
You'll come running back (said you would, baby)
You'll come running back (I always said you would)
You'll come running back, to me
Yes time, time, time is on my side, yes it is

I said, time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
Oh, time, time, time is on my side
Yeah, time, time, time is on my side

Who popularized this tune in the 60's? I cannot remember.

It starts at about $5 mil. In the case of SAR, it ends closer to $7 mil. Bonzi's contract ended at about $8 mil. I doubt he will make as much as his last contract, but not considerably less, therefore a "touch" above the MLE would be a fair offer.

True, but the amount being mentioned/discussed previously here and in other threads was for a contract starting about where his left off or higher (based on his strong performance throughout the year including the PO and his outstanding behavior/attitude last year), or about $8-9 mil a year. If they can get him signed for a "touch" over the MLE, I think just about everyone here will be a VERY happy camper.

Apparently I was thinking of the $8 mil figure and you were thinking of something closer to $6 mil and I didn't pick up on that. No biggie.

FREE-AGENT UPDATE: A source said Sacramento has offered Kings free-agent guard Bonzi Wells a five-year contract worth about $36 million, but Wells, who made $8 million last season, wants more. The Nuggets are interested in Wells but can't offer more than a five-year, $30 million deal.
Michael Higgins, agent for Minnesota Timberwolves free-agent guard Marcus Banks, said Nuggets director of player personnel Mark Warkentien has called about his client but mainly just to touch base. Higgins said it's most likely Banks, primarily a point guard, will return to the Timberwolves.
"I've heard their name a couple of times," Banks said of the Nuggets. "Who knows? I can play the combo (guard)."

Looks like we are offering him slightly above the MLE.

5 years $36 million is a fair opening offer, IMHO and quite a bit above the MLE. From what has been reported, Phillips made a counter-offer and he's now waiting to see what the Kings will do. I would think they might settle at something close to 5/$40, which is what a lot of people around here were predicting from the beginning.

I have my fingers crossed.

So.....since Bonzi's agent made a counter offer, maybe its Bonzi who's sweating this out, not GP. Maybe GP is just waiting him out a little and seeing what another team might offer in a sign and trade., then GP will counter back and Bonzi will be happy to accept. :)
