Westbrook Signs with the Kings

Good Move or Bad Move?

How's the "true" PG they just signed looking? The league hasn't had true PG's in 15 years. You want a PG? Go look at Giannis. Or Luka. Or Jokic. That's what a PG looks like these days. Making plays off of the attack. Carter looked by far the best in his limited minutes. That was the one time we saw actually draw and kick and "spray" 3's.
LOL like those guys grow on trees.

Meh …. You will still watch it because hate is the other side of love. It’s when you move to I don’t give a damn one way or another that the Kings will have fully lost you.
If I haven't gotten there in the last 27 years, it certainly won't start this year!

They surely don't, but @SacTownKid's point is well-taken. Playmaking comes from all over the court in the modern NBA. With their current roster, most of the Kings' playmaking should be coming from Domas, anyway. That said, I have no problem with the Kings bringing in a veteran PG as a stopgap, since a great deal of ballhandling and playmaking went out the door when Fox was traded, but why they felt the need to sign Schroder to a long-term deal is beyond me.

Will Westbrook be playing tonight? Two starters and a key reserve are out. So far, no announcement has been made.

I really don't hate Westbrook, and I respect him as a player for sure. Love him or hate him, I don't think anyone can dismiss that he has had an impact on this last generation of the NBA. I do not want him on this particular team for a variety of reasons, but certainly will cheer for him on the court.

If you don’t he’ll have security kick you out of games

I’m with Taxman on this. The signing is hard to make sense of when we have so many guards. If Perry would follow this up with a trade of one or two of our guards for wing help, then I get it. Westbrook’s shooting can be erratic but he plays his ass off. I suspect after watching h8m for a bit and if fans are being fair, there is a chance they appreciate him more than a bunch of our vets now.

All that being said, can’t wait til he and Carter share the back court and they are missing every outside shot.

Not sure if this has been mentioned here, but apparently the Westbrook contract is non-guaranteed.

Capt. Factorial, what do you make of that?

I guess that's mildly surprising. January 10th is the drop-dead date, beyond that all non-guaranteed contracts have to go either fully guaranteed or be cut. It's possible to set a guarantee date before that, but pretty typically it will be Jan. 10th, so I assume that's how the Westbrook contract would be designed.

Given that it's a league-minimum contract, there's not a ton of headroom between cutting a guaranteed contract in January and walking away from a non-guaranteed contract at the same time. Could be used to leverage a tiny bit more tax space/apron room if necessary. But all in all, it's not a huge plus relative to a guaranteed contract.

That said, looks like either Russ couldn't finagle a minimum guaranteed contract out of *anybody* or he just really wants to be here and play with this particular team. Why bail out of Denver when he could have stayed for almost identical money? Kinda weird.

Last week a podcast player I think Pat Bev said he opted out because Denver’s wasn’t gonna have him in the rotation

The Kings have somehow assembled a roster with two first ballot HoFers(Deebo and Russ), another guy who’s probably going to go there (Domas), and another multiple time all-star (Lavine) and are somehow no closer to winning than they were last year.
Because they are all on the downside of their career except maybe Sabonis. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s what happens when your owner builds the team like a rookie in fantasy basketball

Yeah, but the point still remains. I posted the top assist getters from 2010 vs. today before. In 2010 almost all team assist leaders were PG's, not so much today. I think there was like 1 or 2 in the top 10. Teams need a hub, not a PG. The Kings are stuck in times gone by and trying to band aid over a gaping hole. The idea that a PG is setting up every teams offense is bunk. Most teams are just spreading the floor and winging it from there. The most key part of being a PG these days, or better yet a play initiator is getting into the paint and dishing back out. You know, this annoying "spray" 3 we're sick of hearing about? haha.

Yeah, loved Vince Carter here getting a chance to get more time in but what did it do for the Kings in the end? That time would have been much better spent on yet more first rounders the Kings were in the process of burying on the bench. This team could sit in the middle of the pack of the playoff race this season, but if it's done on the backs of players on the very back end of their career there is no future there. It's a blip, no different than the beam team or the year Mitch got the Kings to the playoffs. It's all about intent now, and we'll know quickly if this is yet again history repeating itself or being done in earnest for once.

Russ is probably ready for the Kings to revitalize his career too so he can land on a contender come playoff time.

Well, we do have one of those. I think we should hold on to him and build around him, but that's not a terribly popular opinion around here right now.

Co-sign on this. I too really hate this team. Not a particular reflection on any of the players. Up until mid-way through last year, Monk was one of my favorite Kings of all time. Domas was (and still is) a complete warrior. DeRozen is an ageless wonder, and Zach is perhaps the greatest shooter in Sac Kings history (I still love you Peja...)

However, I hate the stupidity of our ownership group. I hate that Vivek has allowed all of this crap with his daughter to fester. I hate that Perry seems like at best he needs to be a cunning communicator to try to manipulate Vivek to make sound decisions going forward. I hate that Christie does have the potential (in my mind) to be a really solid coach, but that he's likely only there for the PR and cheap contract. I hate that I will continue to shell out money for league pass to watch this team, and that I WILL actually watch this team. I hate feeling like we are one of only a handful of extremely stupid NBA teams.

I gotta say, if the NBA got it's act together and finally put an expansion team in Seattle, I would probably finally change my NBA allegiance. I've lived most of my life outside of the sacramento area and just feel like my life is too short for this.
Post of the day

Put me down as not surprised if we sneak into the 8th seed, with Russ giving a boost to an older yet still talented team.

I’m not predicting it, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it happens.

If Russ is giving that boost why didn’t teams sign him a long time again lol we might get season swept by 8 teams in the west better chance we win 20 games then the playoffs

I mean, that's fine and dandy, but you don't get better by holding the clip board all season and getting 4 minutes of playing time in a blowout every 4th game
Maybe not but that’s what development leagues are for. IF you aren’t ready yet, it doesn’t always help to just get thrown out there and get washed every night by 30 either. There’s a happy medium in there somehow and we still don’t know who will play and who won’t

I’m glad this site and social media are a very small example and not the totality of what will be his experience here in Sacramento, no matter how ugly it may get or average. I don’t know how things will go but i do believe he’s gonna feel a ton of love here and likely is already out in the real world.
