Welcome Sergio Rodriguez

Welcome, Sergio. For however long you're here, just bring energy and enthusiasm and you'll do fine.

Poor pooch -- we do that a lot. :p

Sergio was one of the PGs I wanted us to take back when he was drafted, so nice of us to pick him up a few years later after he's probably proven he's just a backup. Glad he's here though -- we did not otherwise address our terrible passing in this draft.

Is Sergio still on his rookie deal? I think that would make him an expiring contract this season, right?

PS. RealGM.com has Rudy Fernandez on the Kings instead of Sergio :).

I left my TV after Rubio was picked 5th because I was too disgusted to watch any more. I got to my parents house and my dad says "did you hear about the trade? We got that Spanish guy from the Blazers."

I instantly thought Petrie pulled off some sort of Garcia/Beno for Fernandez miracle trade, and was soooo happy for about 7 minutes. I thought Geoff Petrie was FINALLY back to his old ways in pulling off amazing deals for the Kings. Then I found out it was Sergio... who?

yaaaay Kings

??? We've had a long-standing tradition of not dumping on someone in their "welcome" thread. Just seems kind of wrong to bash him before he even steps into town while you're saying "Hi. Welcome!"

hi guys, i'm a spanish guy who've been following Sergio since was playing here in spain.

The guy has A LOT of potential. He only needs enough time to play (in portland he hadn't) and a more attacking system. I was hoping he was traded to Sacramento or NY...and he finally did. Just wait to see him play there.

he's not as good as ricky (he should improve his outside shoot and Def) but his court vision is much, much better. In fact, his court vision is crazy. He didn't play too much, but just see his assist per minute...

One thing everybody forgets is he's only 23. He could be the next Nash. Do you remember at what age Nash started being so good? At 26/27. I mean, maybe Sergio don't ends up being the next Nash, but... he only needs a team with the good system because he's not a PG that fits in any team. Portland wasn't, but sacramento IS.

I'd bet he ends up as starting PG there.

I just watched Sergio highlight videos from the national team and DAMN it is just as impressive as any Rubio film i saw. thing is Sergios is a single game highlight vs. Rubio season highlights.

I am not going to post all of them just check one of these out and you will see what I am saying.

That was why he got the Spanish Chocolate nickname. HAven't seen uch of it over here, and it might be an accelerated taming of the JWill process with McMillan trying to squeeze the playground out of him and make him a solid pro, but in the process him losing his edge.

isn't that package of videos precisely why most wanted rubio? I mean this guy was doing it while Rubio was wanting to be like him.

Guy 1: So, did our Kings draft Rubio like I've been hoping for?

Guy 2: Well, I don't want to spoil it for you...but Rubio miraculously fell to us at 4! Now we finally have a point guard from Spain!......although he is known as a very good passer, he really needs to work on his shooting...

Guy 1: Wow, so we got Rubio after all!

Guy 2: No.

Guy 1:

Guy2: uhhhh... hes "like rubio" but not quite....

Welcome Sergio.

I happen to like Rodriguez quite a lot BTW--he's definitely a pure PG, and can really pass the ball--let's just say that is passing is nearly on par with someone like Jose Calderon, one of the fantasy gods I've had on my team the past several years. He's super unselfish (albeit somewhat by necessity because his offensive game lags far behind his passing game) and will make a pass almost for every shot that he takes too.

But that Spanish chocolate moniker also holds--he really overdoes the passing, gets flashy--throughout his entire basketball career (even in Europe), he's always been super turnover-prone (let's just put this way--he once averaged 4 turnovers per game in 20 mpg in Europe!). That may endear himself to fans, but really is not conducive to winning--and while he's still young, he hasn't changed any here. And once J Will underwent that transformation to repressed standard passer under the guidance of Hubie Brown in the Grizz, he seemed to have lost a step--just didn't leave is imprint on the game as much. So really, turnovers are probably a part of his game, and we probably have to accept it if he takes a more prominent role.

But the offensive game is what really kept him pined to the bench even for Portland (even when they needed a PG)--his scoring rate is pretty poor, and while he doesn't abuse the three pt shot as much as J-Will did he also has huge problems scoring efficiently--he's only an average finisher and he's highly unreliable on basically any jumper he attempts. While the jumper is the easiest thing to improve, and he's still only 23, the combination of his offensive passivity and little improvement doesn't bode terribly well for him. I think there's some potential, but there's just too many variables to consider--suffice to say I think he's worse than J-Will offensively. To his credit, even when defenders lay off him he's still an excellent passer, so he does make himself useful offensively. Defensively he just looks for the steal, gets himself out of position often and lacks the sort of strength, habits and effort to get things done--another reason Portland glued him to the bench.

So what we're getting is a player with the unique strength of passing (even passing very well despite his lack of a jumper--a testament to how good a PG he is), and he's only 23 years old and has good height for a PG (6'3"). But offensively he's passive, extremely turnover prone and doesn't have a reliable jumper, and defensively he has way too many habits and can get foul prone--to his credit these could be correctable, but they're probably both ingrained in his game (he just seems to be living off his passing talents). Another case of extremely talented player, but highly undisciplined game. Just too many things to correct, although if he even semi-improves some of these aspects he could potentially get more playing time. I like him a lot because of his unique gift of passing, and because his other weaknesses technically can be correctable (more effort based) but we'll see.

In terms of the team construct, I hope this spells the end for Beno. I know it's hard to move Beno with his toxic contract, but Sergio's age in combination with his elite passing >>> Beno's age in combination with decent offense and mediocre passing. PG offense is easy to replace, and Beno's game is just too ordinary, and with our youth movement his age might suggest him to be the odd one out. Besides, Sergio has the same height of Beno, and has the same defensive liabilities as well, so they're somewhat duplicates in some facets of the game. I know we may need a PG guide for the time being, but we can save more $$ by trading Beno and easily resign Bobby Jackson or another vet PG on the cheap, so that's easily replaceable--having a lineup of Tyreke Evans (hopefully he can play some PG), Sergio and a vet PG sounds more enticing to me.

I disagree. Is only a question of lack of concentration and motivation. Sergio in Portland was almost depressed, and even being 2nd PG most time of the season, his minutes in Portland last year have been so, so irregular. It's very hard to get hot when you're playing 2 minutes, after that to the bench, next quarter 3 minutes, after that to the bench...and so on. He has been changed into the bench so many times that he was doing pretty well, only because the only thing McMillan had in mind offenseively is Brandon Roy. All the ****ing season.

It's true that he has to improve jumpers and defense, but if he starts playing more regular time (even being 2nd PG) it's a question of time in court that he starts doing things pretty well.

In summer league last year he had a lot of confidence and time and his numbers were very decent. He had also some very good games in which he did very well, as against the Bulls in November.

I think if Sergio has enough time regularity in Sacramento he can get into 8-10 poings / 14 assists easily. Regularity in court -> Regularity in numbers.

Welcome to KF! I like your take on Sergio -possibly because I really agree with the take that he really didn't get an opportunity to do much playing behind Brandon Roy. I think he'll get a fair shot here...

Hi Sergio, and welcome to Sacramento!

It's been a long time since we had a PG who made a lot of assists per minute played, with a good assist/TO ratio like yours. I always thought it was a crime that you spent so much time on the bench before, and am excited about the prospect of your getting a lot of PT for the Kings.

Welcome Sergio!!

Everyone wanted a pure point guard. Well now we have one. I agree with Arby that he has some flaws, and that most of them are correctable. The plus is that he's only 23 and that he's not being asked to be the saviour. He comes at a reasonable price and the change of scenery could be transformable.

I agree that Portland was the wrong place for him. Roy is one of those players that needs the ball in his hands to be really effective. Portland needs a Mike Bibby or a Westbrook type player to compliment Roy. So this could be a good move for Sergio, and if so, a good move for the Kings.

He was interviewed on fridy by spanish media, he seems to be very, very happy. He wanted to be traded anywhere, and although his idealistic place was NY with D'Antoni, I guess he's also very excited with Westphall on the bench.

This dude will get JT the ball.

I really want Beno the F outta here. So many times JT would be calling for it on the block with good position for a dunk, and Beno would ignore him, dribble for 5-8 seconds, and launch a 3 (which would raddle off the rim).

That mix tape was nice too. I expect lots of flashy passes and TOs from Sergio this season haha.

But whats worse? A TO resulting from a risky pass (Sergio), Or a TO where he (Beno) dribbles it off of his foot and then yells at the closest Kings player? At least a risky pass can turn into an easy bucket if it's pulled off.

Okay, that's just not fair, you know?

Sometimes he yelled all the way across the court.

;)

Welcome Sergio,

Hey the Kings have some guys who can take a nice lob pass and throw it down, so you should fit right in:)

On the Tyreke or Beno or Sergio decision, I think these guys can play together at times depending on the defensive matchups.

Go Kings!

Don't forget all the times that JT ran the floor beating the other team to be WIDE open under the basket and NEVER get the ball. It seemed like this happened at least 2-4 times every game. To JT's credit, he never stopped running the floor.

I really thought by getting Sergio, that Geoff was planning on adding Rubio. That way Ricky would be a little more comfortable here. Man, I was wrong.

I really hope he still has that flash in his game cause we need that badly. This team/fans needs to have fun again.

It would have been a fun pairing to say the least, and I was thinking maybe the same thing.

ya know, that wouldve been great. but i had a feeling that it would workout this way and petrie would pass on rubio. mostly because i wanted rubio on the team so bad that i knew deep down inside that we wouldnt get him. sergio is a good passer and ball handler, i hope we trade beno and to be honest this team is so bad that i wouldnt mind throwing kevin in just to get rid of him.

just knowing that we have a pg that can and will pass the ball almost to a fault is a good feeling. its a start...
