I just popped in here to whine. I have been so busy (spent the entire night Tues in the ER with my sister who got 3 bags of fluids for severe dehydration after being sick with the stomach flu all day). Anyway, I digress...........

It is currently 7 degrees (and 10 below with the wind chill). Ack!! Can't avoid going out as I am now on my way to work. I'll check in on the board and catch up with things this evening.....provided I don't freeze to death first.
Is your sister ok?

And I thought it was too cold here. I just spoke to someone in Canada and it's 30 below there...YIKES!

My weather can in no way compare to 6th's but there is a very cold wind that came up early this morning. This is very cold air - I guess it's our version of the Polar Express.

Stupid weather guessers. I went to a lot of trouble to prepare for the onslaught of snow, including stocking up on new batteries, bringing in much more firewood than usual, etc.

I get up this morning expecting to see a fresh blanket of snow and what do I see? Puddles. Small puddles. Not any snow, not even any evidence of significant precipitation.

Then I get this:

BURNEY BASIN/EASTERN SHASTA COUNTY-MOUNTAINS SOUTHWESTERN SHASTA COUNTY TO NORTHERN LAKE COUNTY-SHASTA LAKE AREA/NORTHERN SHASTA COUNTY-WEST SLOPE NORTHERN SIERRA NEVADA-WESTERN PLUMAS COUNTY/LASSEN PARK-303 PM PST MON DEC 27 2004

...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SACRAMENTO, CA HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH.

A MUCH COLDER STORM FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA IS FORECAST TO HIT THE MOUNTAINS OF THE INTERIOR OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY WITH HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS. SNOW LEVELS WILL LOWER TO 3000 TO 4000 FEET.

A FOOT OR MORE OF SNOW IS FORECAST FOR THE COASTAL RANGE MOUNTAINS AND SHASTA COUNTY MOUNTAINS...AND SNOWFALL AMOUNTS FROM 1 TO 3 FEET ARE LIKELY OVER THE WEST SLOPES OF THE NORTHERN SIERRA NEVADA BY THURSDAY EVENING.

SNOW SHOWERS WILL LINGER OVER THE REGION ON FRIDAY AND INTO THE NEW YEARS HOLIDAY WEEKEND WITH FURTHER SNOW ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE.

NEW YEARS HOLIDAY TRAVELERS SHOULD LISTEN TO LATER FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS CONCERNING THIS POTENTIALLY BIG STORM.

...

A foot of snow on the coastal range? Whoa...

Maybe I shouldn't be griping about getting in all that extra firewood.

;)

You call this Winter?

For several days this past week, I was complaining about the cold......-11 with wind chill....yep, it has been cold. Well, it is warming up now. Got into the 30's today, low is only 27 tonight. It is even supposed to reach 50 degrees by the end of the week. Nope, I am definitely not complaining.

I am almost embarassed to be a Californian. What a wussie place. We have house guests coming this week from Cold Harbor, Michigan. With weather like this, they will probably stay outdoors and pick flowers.

All you in the hills its on its way. They are now saying that Wed storm is gonna be the big one for this week. Although they predict heavy rain this evening and overnight on weather.com for Yuba City and its like dry right now.

I am beginning to think weather is not an exact science... :) What gave me that idea.

Dopler this Dopler that, Sat images, rain gages... man mother nature has scoreboard on them for sure.

My boss has a weather rock. It's infallible. If the rock is wet, it's raining. If it's white, it's snowing. If it's bright and easily spotted, it's sunny. If she can't see it, it's foggy - although low clinging clouds would be the better term. If it's gone, it means her husband tripped over it and tossed it down the hill again.

I strongly suspect that your boss' rock is actually just an "Indian love stone."

...SERIES OF STRONG WINTER STORMS EXPECTED FOR END OF 2004...

A COLD LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DROPPING OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA WILL SEND A SERIES OF STRONG STORMS THROUGH NORTHERN CALIFORNIA DURING THE LAST THREE DAYS OF 2004. THE FIRST OF THESE FRONTAL SYSTEMS IS EXPECTED TO MOVE THROUGH NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TONIGHT BRINGING PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN TO THE VALLEY AND HEAVY SNOWFALL TO THE MOUNTAINS. IN ADDITION...STRONG GUSTY WINDS ARE EXPECTED WITH THIS SYSTEM. WIND GUSTS OF GREATER THAN 30 MPH ARE EXPECTED IN THE VALLEY TONIGHT WITH GUSTS OF UP TO 50 MPH EXPECTED OVER THE MOUNTAINS OF THE INTERIOR OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO PIVOT THROUGH NORTHERN CALIFORNIA ON THURSDAY AND STILL ANOTHER ON FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT. COMBINED...THESE STORM SYSTEMS ARE LIKELY TO BRING 2 INCHES OR MORE OF RAINFALL TO THE VALLEY BETWEEN TONIGHT AND NEW
YEARS DAY WITH NEW MOUNTAIN SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO 3 TO 5 FEET AT THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. SNOW LEVELS WILL BE SOMEWHAT LOW WITH THESE SYSTEMS...LIKELY DROPPING TO BETWEEN 2000 AND 3000 FEET OVER THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS OF CALIFORNIA AND BETWEEN 3000 AND 4000 FEET OVER THE SIERRA OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

PERIODS OF HEAVY RAINFALL ARE LIKELY AT THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. PEOPLE SHOULD BE ALERT FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF
LOCALIZED FLOODING ESPECIALLY ON VALLEY ROADWAYS. WINDY CONDITIONS AT TIMES MAY ALSO MAKE TRAVELING HAZARDOUS ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE DRIVING HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.

TRAVEL WILL BE ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS THROUGHOUT THE MOUNTAINS OF
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WHERE THE COMBINATION OF HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS COULD BRING BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AT TIMES. WINTER STORM WARNINGS HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR ALL OF THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FROM TONIGHT THROUGH NEW YEARS EVE.

USE EXTRA CAUTION WHEN TRAVELING OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS...ALLOW EXTRA TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATIONS AND BE SURE AND CHECK THE LATEST ROAD AND WEATHER REPORTS BEFORE DEPARTURE. THE COLD WET WEATHER PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INTO AT LEAST EARLY NEXT WEEK.

There is still about two feet of snow on the ground and it looks like I'm gonna get more...

ANOTHER STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING ACROSS THE EASTERN PACIFIC IS EXPECTED TO BRING STRONG WINDS AND SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF PRECIPITATION TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. THE LEADING EDGE OF THIS STORM WILL APPROACH THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS AND THE SIERRA NEVADA BY EARLY FRIDAY MORNING. ANOTHER COLDER STORM SYSTEM DROPPING SOUTH OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA WILL MERGE WITH THIS FIRST STORM BY LATE FRIDAY. THIS WILL BRING MUCH COLDER AIR INTO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BEGINNING FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY. SNOW LEVELS WILL RANGE FROM 3000 TO 5000 FEET ON FRIDAY BUT WILL LOWER INTO THE FOOTHILLS STARTING FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY AND CONTINUING SUNDAY. SNOW IS EVEN POSSIBLE OVER THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE NORTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY AS MUCH COLDER AIR MOVES INTO THE AREA.

TOTAL SNOWFALL ACROSS THE SIERRA COULD RANGE FROM 3 TO 5 FEET AT THE 5000 FOOT LEVEL...WITH EVEN MORE ACROSS THE PASSES ALONG THE SIERRA CREST. ACROSS THE FOOTHILLS AND NORTHERN MOUNTAINS ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO A FOOT ABOVE 1500 TO 2500 FEET ARE POSSIBLE...LOCALLY LOWER IN THE SHASTA LAKES REGION. IN ADDITION...STRONG WINDS WITH GUSTS OF 60 MPH OR MORE ARE LIKELY AT TIMES...CREATING WIDESPREAD WHITE OUT CONDITIONS.

And, from what it says, some of you in the valley might also get snow.

:D

It is supposed to drop into the mid-20s in Placerville. Given the front, that means snow for the first time in two years. My teeth started hurting today, a sure sign of a storm front moving in.

My hot-tub just broke and I'm running low on seasoned firewood. I smell an impending disaster. Send in the helicopters with hot chocolate and nice warm snow bunnies.
