The whole point is Patterson at the 4 is pretty much everything you hoped to get from Donte Greene there. Great mismatch opportunity at the 4. He's a great shooter for a spot shooting 4, just so much more interesting at PF and lesser so in all categories at SF.
i don't see pat chasing lebron or quicker sf's around. he would be better suited to help draw out a joel anthony or bosh from the paint.
this would be taking away an advantage like smart removing reke from the pg position.
No, that actually gave us an advantage. With him as the star, our offense was low scoring AND we had terrible defense. Now, we just have terrible defense, as our offense is ranked 10th in the NBA.
This again?
Simply put: when the ball is in his hands, good things happen.
Last year when it was at PG, for that brief moment in time, we DID beat upper-echelon teams. This year, when he's allowed to facilitate, even though it's from the SG position, good things happen for us. It doesn't hurt that players are now hitting open shots, as opposed to last year, but let's not let the fact that he's starting the game at a different position take away from the fact that he needs to be the facilitator in order to break down defenses.
So you're on team RekeforPG?
I'm on team GiveHimTheDamnBall.
I don't care if he's at SG- it's a meaningless label. His backcourt needs to be a spot up shooter who can move the ball.
I agree, spot up shooters who can defend should space the floor and reke/cuz pick an roll should initate our offense at the top alla the spurs.
That gives Reke multiple options depending upon how the defense reacts. he can hit cuz rolling or for a pop jump shot, take it himself or pull up, or swing it to the weak side and let the ball move around until it finds a great (not good) but great shot.
Starting off a play with a PnR involving your 2 best players is something alot of teams do, as noted Duncan and parker, Wade and James, Durrant and westbrook etc.
I just cant figure out for the life of me why Smart is so presistantly against it, when Reke and Cuz run it on their own a few times it yields success, imagine if they had an actual system taliored around it.
There are glaring weaknesses in how Smart coaches a game. The two that drive me nuts the most just might be his refusal to make a substitution during a time out and his apparent ignorance about the pick and roll.
Ive given up trying to figure out his bizzare rotations, the last time Jimmer got any significant time was when his parents/family were here, was that why he played? i guess will never know.
most of the time smart is trying to put a big up top and let the midgets try to back cut, that works if you run it seldomly and the defense falls asleep, you CANNOT rely on that as being the staple of your offense because defenses can easily stop it and it ussually leaves a big out in no mans land trying to make a decision that a guard should be making. the end result is ussually an ISO late in the shot clock or a chuck.
defenders are too good/athletic now that unless you have a Kobe or Lebron you cannot rely on a constant diet of ISO's or hoping defenders fall asleep on backcuts everytime, you must start with a pick or multiple picks to free guys up a bit and force the defense to bend.

Player. He's better than Salmons.
In general everything you said is true. However all those things you mentioned will work if done within the confines of a set system. To back what your saying, we used to run Kevin Martin off of double and sometimes triple screens to get him an open shot. But Martin was excellent at coming off of screens and shooting the ball. Neither IT or Thornton know how to use a screen properly. That was Jimmer's bread and butter at BYU, but he hasn't been revelant of late. I guess what I'm saying, is that we don't have a Martin on our team. Tyreke seems to have made progress at the catch and shoot, and the straight pullup and shoot, but he's not someone that can come off a screen and shoot consistently.
We've put Cousins at the high post, and tried to run the offense through him. But too many times when he gets the ball, no one is moviing without the ball. So he has no one to pass to, and as you said, its ends up being an ISO with 5 ticks left on the shotclock. What this team doesn't have is ball movement. The ball can move faster than a player, and if you keep the ball moving eventually you'll break down the defense. Unfortunately, there's always someone out there that thinks the ball stops here. We have a team of players that complain after every game that the other team always manages to get open shots, and how they need to improve the team defense. They watch film of what the other teams do, and yet, they refuse to do the same things themselves. I guess when your that talented, you don't have to listen to anyone!
