We Need To Talk About Queta

I branched this thread off from the Jordan Ford thread, as it seems the mere mention on Queta's name (in reference to who would get the last two-way deal) spurred far more discussion on Queta than on Ford. I'm editing posts as necessary to segregate the two...

Also, as for Queta. I just don't see it. I said this last year when he came in that game and scored a bunch of points and Kings fans were clamoring for him. He looked so lost and out of place in basically every moment outside of that flurry it worried me. I saw more of that in Summer League. He'd have a moment or two, then just looked completely lost.

At this point we have two NBA roster spots and one two-way contract remaining, and we have to decide what is going to happen with Queta.
Queta has got to go. I thought he should have been a gonner last year. Still waiting, waiting and waiting for defensive length on this team that isn't wasted space (like Queta).

I’m just not ready to give up on Queta yet. I can’t get the thought of Hassan whitesides career path out of my head.

Yes the circumstances are different to where Whiteside was lazy and our organization wasn't really good at developing players, compared to where I have complete confidence in the org to build players these days and Queta isn’t lazy.
I just don’t wanna see Queta leave them ‘thrive’ elsewhere.

idk. Not ready to give up on him but not sure if we have a choice at this point.

A solid 5 minutes and a fill in here and there is exactly what a team like this needs. If Metu got the minutes he did last year Queta should at least be that capable. The issue is the need for basically a 5th big over a 3rd PG at this point if it's a question of one or the other. I'd say a 3rd PG is probably a little more valuable considering Delly did see some minutes last season but Monk can run pnr so it's not that big of a need either. Len can in theory fill in place of Metu next year and Lyles will hopefully be taking that backup C role.

Maybe. Hard disagree on Queta.

Some info for you guys regarding Queta´s last months and summer league performance, this was info from a Portuguese journalist with direct contact to Neemy.

Queta's Visa got delayed for around 2 months, so He arrived to the US 48 hours before the California classic started, that means he spent the last months or so without any type of specialized practices except for a couple training sessions in Lisbon, that also means he arrived way behind everyone else in terms of conditioning and game rhythm .

According to the Portuguese journalist, Queta told him the injury is not a problem and it should be back to normal after some weeks and that summer league play is very guard orientated, so this and his late arrival to the country might have contributed to his inconsistent play.

Im not giving excuses here, but i also find this situation kind of an explanation for Queta´s performance, especially considering he dominated consistently last year against this level of competition.

My negative evaluation of Queta has nothing to do with his injury or his performance in the recent summer league. Like I said before, he should have been cut last year. He's just not very good and unfortunately doesn't have the dna to become good, imo

If Queta gets an offer sheet from an other club, He should take it, because Kings wont match
if Queta signs the QO for 2 mil as our 3rd Two-way- he wont break into the Rotation with Noel and Len as our Big man backups
behind Small ball C Lyles
At this point would rather fill our Third two-way with Ford, Mike Daum, or Jake Stevens

Maybe.....maybe Ford. But Daum or Stevens? Daum runs like a 60 year old man who just pooped his pants and Stevens looked like he had been playing basketball for all of 5 minutes. Neither guy is NBA material.

I still think the best course for Queta is going overseas and trying to pull off a Hassan type of career move. Tavares just made it back after showcasing for a few seasons. Queta sitting on the bench for another team won't really do him much at this point considering his age and limitations. If he starts producing on camera NBA teams will be looking on.

There’s still unteachable tools there with Queta. 2-way contracts are unlikely to be huge contributors in the long run anyways, so I’m hoping the 7 foot giant man blessed with solid coordination and ability to move really well learns to play the sport. The things you can’t teach are there and they’re very intriguing.

I don't see any space for NQ with Len and Noel. Even before the injury, he didn't look great at Summer camp when it was make or break time.

He should of had his visa issues taken care of....with a paid agent and millions on the line how do you screw that up??

The Kings take care of his Visa... not the Agents, the Teams are responsible for these things.
For short periods like 2 months a person can use an ESTA to enter the US, but for longer periods like a year you need something like an L1 Visa and that has to be applied by the Team.

I think its worth pointing out that is actually unfair to Queta to compare him to Hassan Whiteside.. Thats holding someone to unrealistic expectations.. I get that Whiteside was the 33rd pick and Queta was 38th or whatever, but really its very much apples and oranges.

I mean I'm pretty sure you guys know the sort of jekyl and hyde routine with Whiteside, when he was truly focused he was pretty much unstoppable.. Queta doesnt have it like that, he's a try-hard, max effort guy.

Whiteside wasnt like 'a star', but really he just had way more 'starpower' than a guy like Queta.. Like he had many of the rare tool necessary to be a star, y'kno?

Queta's ticket to being a rotation guy involves him making that 3pt shot at a higher clip I think, doesnt get mentioned enough round here with all the NQ comments..

IDK Whiteside is just not a very good player to use as a comparison point, cuz he actually possessed whats referred to as 'natural talent'. its almost like when you see modern day bigs (usually teenagers) getting compared to Kevin Garnett, its like i think you mean Kevin Garnett-Lite, Kevin Garnett was a superstar, your talking about a big that looks like a 2nd or 3rd option on offense type.

Whiteside's issues as a young player were all between the ears. He showed up to the combine for athletic testing in flip-flops.

But physically he was always in rarefied air as a big man. Once he put it all together he was elite as a rebounder and rim protector, at least for a couple years.

Don't want to turn it into a HW thread, but some of the stories posted here when he had a second stint with us were unbelievable (and yes funny). Recall one about him buying a luxury vehicle before he started making real money, and having a 50K assault rifle stolen (ok, that one is more scary than funny).

I mean kudos to him for being good enough at what he does to earn a big payday. More than most of us can dream of in a lifetime. You do wonder as to what could have been if he had the mental fortitude to go with his natural talents.

My post wasn't comparing him to Whiteside as a player, it was a comparison of possible career paths. The same as Tavares. Queta is going to have to find actual court time somewhere. Him going to a place where he can prove what he is as a productive asset will do him much better than sitting 4th in a C rotation and watching the game. If he were 20-21 maybe that flies but not at this age. Him as a depth big for Sac is solid for the franchise but that might not be best for him.
