Teams are allowed 13 active players now

Yeah, the NBA is allowing 13 players on the active roster now. They started with that rule intending to use it during the first half of the "compacted" season on the principle that you might need a rest guys a bit, but then decided to extend it for the entire season. It kind of sounds like this will be permanent - teams are required to have a minimum of 13 on their roster and the league seems to think there's no reason to force a player a team is required to carry to wear a suit. Optional players (#14-15), sure, they still wear suits.

Errrr, I think that the team was allowed to suit up 13 but play only 12 which is truly one of the oddest rules I've heard of. Anybody remember if that is true? Is this an "Ooooops?"

I thought it was 13 active to play 12? Basically giving you the option of who you wanted to use each game, but still only allowing 12 totla to be used every night? Guess not. Hadn't noticed this ever happen before. Certianly not for us.

Yep. I was waiting for him to put in Whiteside and get a Technical. Now it maybe at a certain point in the 4th quarter you can play 13. Need to double check that part.

EDIT: from what I just saw on a google search it was changed to all 13 can play.

It is now a permanent rule as well.

The final two months, however, 13 players can dress but only 12 will be allowed to see action. One player must be designated as being non-active, taking that option away from coaches.​

League vice president Stu Jackson said representatives from the 30 NBA teams voted unanimously to recommend making the current 13-man active rosters permanent for next season and beyond. Prior to this season, teams could have only 12 active players and up to three inactive players, but this season — because of the lockout shortened schedule — teams have been allowed to dress and use 13 players.

General managers and coaches like the added flexibility of having another player in uniform, hence the move to make 13-man rosters permanent.

“The sentiment amongst the committee is you’re required to have a 13-man roster as it is, and if you’re required to have a 13-man roster, you should be able to dress and have their services available,” Jackson said.
