Well like you said, you know very little about football. That is not a possible scenario in the NFL. As the #1 pick, Alex Smith got huge signing bonuses, which is standard for the top picks in the 1st round. If the Niners traded or cut Smith his signing bonuses would accelerate and it would absolutely kill their salary cap situation. That would cripple their ability to sign Free Agents for several seasons.
Then there is the fact that you can't judge a player on one year when he had horrible protection due to O-Line injuries, no big threats at receiver, and no pass catching threat at TE. To top all of that he was a rookie, and rookie QB's always struggle. The exception of Big Ben on the Steelers was because he stepped into a team that already had a very good O-Line, receiving threats, along with a huge running game.
Anyway, enough Alex Smith apologetics. Highlight videos of our draftees can be found at
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/draft. Just go through each round and click the little film icon next to our picks. They have highlights of all of our picks except our 7th rounder.
It was a very good draft from top to bottom, I give it an A-. We get a versatile threat at TE in Vernon Davis who can be a safety valve for Alex Smith, which is a young QB's best friend (like Eli Manning in N.Y. with Shockey).
Manny Lawson is an awesome player as well who will fill our hole in the 3-4 scheme at OLB. Not only does he posses freakish athleticism, he also has good passrush skills and even has experience as a linebacker as a freshman and sophmore, helping his switch.
Brandon Williams in the third round was a good pick as well. He will be our main returner, which last year was a big weakness. He also can compete for the slot receiver spot. He is a small guy and isn't exactly a burner, but has very good burst and short area quickness to get separation.
Michael Robinson will be a good pick in the long run, though it may take him a little time to adjust as he will likely be switching from QB to primarily being a RB/WR. He has good athleticism and is awesome in the open field, and he has started at about 6 different positions at Penn State.
Parys Heralson was a steal in the 5th. He was a monster at Tennesse and he will also make the switch along with Manny Lawson to OLB in the 3-4. He will be a perfect guy to complement Lawson, and I think both of them will probably be starting at some point this season.
The other guys we got were projects who I won't go into much detail on, but all of them have potential to contribute.
