Vegas Summer League-KINGS-HORNETS

Why are they giving all the minutes to K-Mart and Artest?

Those minutes should go to the guys who need time to try to get a spot on the team...So what if the Kings win a summer league game...
Keep the team playing with foucs and developing Kevins leadership skills

I'm sure the main guys were looking at will get nice time through-out the SL.

Hope Nicholson/Gray get more time next game. I think Ron got a lot of minutes because it was his first game, which is fine.

Final was 91-72

Final views.
Amundson is a bigger, taller and scrappier version of Bonzi. He doesn't have jumper past about 15 ft but is a terror down inside.

Justin Williams had only 5 min playing time thru 3 quarters. Toward end in 4th he upped his game a bit

Yemi Nicholson is a big load. Doesn't run court particularily well and could not finish under basket on 3 different occasions, one a dunk that bounced back past free throw line.

Douby looks good in this environment but was still getting his playing legs for this level of competition. Hustles big time and stays in front of his man most of the time.

Taj Gray had minimal minutes only in 4th

Huang is a courtesy player.

Sam Daghlas held his own and is a big hustler and runs the court fairly well.

Lampley played OK but nothing outstanding. He is tough and has an outside shot.

Now keep in mind that the Kings team had two NBA starters on the floor for more than 1/2 the game, Kevin and Ron Artest. A very major unfair advantage.

In the 4th Christian Maraker played quite a bit and looked rather good considering the competition. Moved well, defended well.

Kevin was the class of the game and Artest, well, Artest was Artest. Doing just what you have become expected to see from him. Supurb defender, shoot, score, rebound and raise havoc with the other team.

Ten of the 12 hornets on the roster played between 13:20 and 15:34 min tonight.

yeah thats great but he is 6"8 same size as kenny but he is a pf as well. It would be nice if he could handle the 2 or 3 for some depth but another 6'8 PF????? no thanks.

Bonzi is 6-6. I said Amundson is a bigger, taller and scrapier version of Bonzi who is a 2 or 3. Bonzi averaged 11 rebs for us in playoffs and nearly 10 in season. Amundson can do that and block shots and defend, things KT cannot do

Wow, thanks CruzDude! Great reporting and much appreciated. I do think Amundson may have a bit of a home court advantage. To some extent he has to feel comfortable playing there. Sounds good, tho.

That and from games I watched when he played at UNLV he is a true athletic freak. Not too long but he makes up for that with his athleticism. Also seems like a shut down defender. Draftexpress's review seems like both Justin and Amundson had spectacular defensive plays.

I see both of these guys making the team and possibly being sent to the NBDL if they can't get into a solid rotation.

Thanks Cruz!!!

Thanks so much Cruz, that was nice to read. I sure hope that Justin and Taj get more playing time, also Yemi. We need to see what these guys can do.

I am sure they already know that J-Williams (same goes for Yemi) is going to get an invite to the Kings this fall to try out, but Amundson might be getting all these minutes so the Kings can get a better look.

I actually hope we invite all three, but who knows.

Well they can invite 19 or 20 players to camp right? I say its a pretty good chance most of the bigs make it to camp.

Totally disagree....its because Amundson IS BETTER than those two. Williams is very intriguing, but I've watched him extensively the past few years and he is sometimes just a liability on the court with his decision making and offense. His defense is superb though...enough to make the NBA.

That said, Louis isn't doing this for this reason or that reason, he's doing it because he outplayed both those guys in Portsmouth and Orlando. He held Justin to 6 pts 4 boards in the regular season last year when UNLV played Wyoming, while Lou had 20 pts 8 boards.

Lou is also the only player in MWC history to have 20 pts and 20 boards in a game....and he did it twice...once against Auburn in his junior season, and then again last year vs. Hawaii.

He shut down Julian Sensley (0 pts), Nick Fazekas, Jason Smith, Justin Williams, and pretty much outplayed every big man he went up against last year.

Also realize that Lou was the tallest player UNLV had last year, he didn't have the luxury of having two or three 7 footers playing next to him like Williams had....that translated to Lou not getting the weakside blocks that he could've gotten. He was also the main focus in the post for UNLV, and UNLV's only frontcourt threat....yet despite double teams, and coaches gameplanning to take him out of his game, Lou still had a great season.

Its getting under my skin that so many make excuses as to why he's outplaying other guys.....he did it in college, in portsmouth, in Orlando, and now he's doing it in Vegas....yet its because they're "seeing what he can do" or "he's got somewhat of a homecourt advantage"....what do you guys have against the kid????

Size. That's the only thing I have to nit pick about. We don't have anything against him so to speak. A lot of us are excited that we grabbed him up. You should read the posts we have here about him before you call us out on it. You are taking a couple "he's too short" comments too personal. When a 6'8 power forward comes along than we have to always compare him to our current guy (Kenny Thomas who is also a small 6'7-6'8 power forward)

Oh by the way. He shut down Justin Williams, but in the other game Justin Williams dominated him so they are both 1-1.

We don't have anything against the guy. If he's good enough to make the team I hope he does and it sounds like he is good enough. In all honesty he probably does have a bit of a homecourt advantage, not like it's a bad thing. We're just worried about 6'8'' PFs because we have one on the team already(Kenny Thomas) and he's not that good. Also we want Justin to make the team because he blocks shots well, we were one of the worst shotblocking teams in the league last year.

KINGS SIGN ROOKIE FREE AGENT LOUIS AMUNDSON TO CONTRACT

Nothing except he's too small to be a strong interior defender in the NBA, and that is our area of biggest need. I'll take the hustle game any day of the week, but in the end Louis is the same height as many an NBA OG, and gives up 4 inches to many of the PFs and centers around the league. Means he can hustle, he might even be able to help, but he isn't the guy we need to fix what ails us inside.

Of the camp guys Williams is the guy with the best chance to do that. A little taller, longer, and with a natural knack for shotblocking which you just can't teach. Have no probelms with a hustler making our team come fall, but given our serious interior issues, not at the expense of a shotblocker.

Amundson and Williams are essentially the same size. In the draft measurements Amundson measured 6'7.2" without shoes and Williams measured 6'7.25". So, Williams is 0.05 inches taller than Amundson. Williams' wingspan is two inches longer, which, when you're talking wingspans, also isn't much different.

I've never seen either of these guys play, but it would be great to have a hustle guy to push people in practice and bring some energy off the bench. It seems like Williams really has skill as well, hopefully we can bring both to training camp, let them play some preseason games against better competition and let the cream rise to the top.

Which if true would actually be more of an argument against Williams than for for Amundson. There was a reason that these guys went undrafted.

Nonetheless, this numbers leave hope for Williams as one of those guys who just has a knack:

Amundson: 28.1min 1.3blk
Williams: 30.0min 5.4blk

Also,

Gray: 30.4min 1.6blk
Nicholson: 33.4min 2.8blk

Williams' wingspan is two inches longer, which, when you're talking wingspans, also isn't much different.

Williams has a 9' 1" standing reach (how high he can reach standing flat-footed) which is the same as Hilton Armstrong's. Amundson's is 8' 7.5". So I think its safe to say that Williams plays taller. I like Williams and hope he makes the team, but I like Amundson too. In all the camp and workout reports he would just shut down his guy on the defensive end. Maybe he's more Dennis Rodman than Kenny Thomas.

In only the first two summer league games Amundson and Williams are the most talked about. The VSL competition is a step up from college and a step below NBA. Each of these two saw bigger minutes in only one game so far. Sunday and Monday's game will see who are the keepers.

Yemi struggles up and down and Daghlas, Huang and Pooh are odd guys out. Lampley is a question mark as is Taj Gray neither of which have seen much playing time.

That leaves the core of:
Price - doing well and on bubble of being there come Nov 1
Douby - work in progress but has smooth jumper from anywhere
Maraker - another work in progress who hasn't seen much time, quick feet, defender
Amundson - a keeper based on getting contract, scores-rebounds-hustles
Kevin - being Kevin only smarter, bigger (muscle), and tougher in middle
Cisco - not showing what he should or can, being tentative so far
Williams - great in 1st game, played little in 2nd, great upside
Artest - very agressive on defense, smoother shot from 18-20 ft

One last item. The Kings for the first time in recorded history, experimented with double teaming the ball handler bringing ball down court after a made shot. Worked both times, one resulting in easy transition layup. Also saw more double teaming of other teams major player toward end of game and done well without fouling and resulting in turnover or bad shot. That stuff is tough to do with raw players in summer league but shows what coaching staff is up to.

?? You sure about that? I haveseen pics/videos of Williams and perhaps it's because he is skinny, but he does look the size he is listed (6'10)

Agreed with nbrans and Brick on Amundson/Williams, etc.

I'd like to see us get both of them for the roster. Be interesting to see if/when Gray/Nicholson get more time and what they can do.

Amundson is a white Kenny Thomas without a jumpshot. where is Yemi??????

Ok, a number of people have disagreed. However, so what if he is. He's not the answer to all of our problems, he's an undrafted player we signed out of summer league. Even if he is like KT, KT could be a good role player but has a bad attitude and contract. Especially if KT gets shipped out of town, I wouldn't mind having a KT lite, who would be dirt cheap with a better attitude to come off of the bench.
