Update: Gooden waived after buyout

I would definitely give him at least a high B, but maybe not an A. I would give him the A if he got rid of Nocioni's contract or if he got some good young talent or draft pick(s).

Yes, I agree. He now gets a B+ from me. Nocioni"s contract keeps him from the A...IMO.

Yep, another good little move -- in recent years every time we have developed a suspicion that our front office was going to do something stupid -- sign a creaky old vet, offer stupid contract extensions, blow draft position, whatever -- they have in fact done it. It has been impossible to be too pessimistic about their acumen. But as of late there is a distinct change. When we made that trade everyone immediately saw the Jerry Reynolds gushing as a sign of the same old stupid PR campaigning being waged, and saw Gooden as a real threat to the kids' minutes and to getting a big cap clogging contract in the offseason. And in years past, that is exactly what would have happened. But now it seems things are changing. Moves are being made with the future in mind.

Considering we traded Salmons and Miller for basically just Noc....

....I think we coulda gotten a better deal. Especially if we just hung onto Miller until next season when he's a huge expiring.

Then again if we're able to do a good signing this offseason I reckon it'll all be worth it. Plus freeing up money and minutes for youth is never a bad thing during a rebuild.

I made a Miller for Tyrus Thomas thread awhile back and about 50% of the people responding ripped it as a bad trade....I wonder what reaction I would have gotten if I did a Miller and Salmons for Nocioni thread. Haha.

If this buyout saved the Kings $2M then Gooden truly bought out for pennies on the dollar. Maybe even penny. His salary for the year is $7.1M, but since the season is almost 3/4 over the Kings didn't owe him nearly that much. Let's call the season 7/10 over, to be conservative. The remaining 3/10 of Gooden's contract would be worth $2.1M. If we saved $2M, Gooden basically walked away from the remainder of the contract.

Don't feel too badly. Would you like some Worchestershire sauce or perhaps a bit of catsup?

;)

How about some wasabi? It sure makes raw fish go down nicely so it should probably help here.

I will at least cherish the fact that I am the only person in the prediction game who went 100% when predicting Gooden to win a category.

That's right.. ok - this must be the list:

Shortest stay ever:

O'Bryant - half an hour?? :p
Cassel - A day and a half
Gooden - 11 days

;)

Nope. There's also a number of draft day trades. I can think of one - Dan Dickau - right off the top of my head. We drafted him for Atlanta, I think...

Gooden would come nowhere near the top 10 I don't think...

I'm OK with a lot of the moves made recently but this one just reeks of cheapness. I know Gooden probably wasn't a long term solution here but now we can't even explore the option. I'm not totally OK with this move.

so does this mean we now have the cap space to go after sessions in the off season? That and draft griffin or thabeet I'd be a pretty happy camper :)

Stupid move. Drew Gooden is a good player.
Seems like this team is trying to suck.

The Kings will need a 3rd "BIG" in the rotation next year. Without Gooden, they have none. So do they draft Griffin to fill that role? or wait into the mid 20's to use Houston's pick for Bryant of Santa Clara? He is a graduating senior , 6-11 and 270 and a monster in the middle leading the conference in rebounding. Not fast but total energy and hustle and quite the banger who rebounds as a primary task.

Sad to see Gooden go but good for both sides at this point. Some GM somewhere who gets Gooden and if he helps, will owe our GP....... Possible Kings could get him back in free agency this summer. Wouldn't that be something?

Don't think waiving or releasing anyone else at this point helps. Booth might be the exception but with only 2 bigs and both virtual rookies, he might have to stay just in case.

This is the best news I have heard all day. It finally seems like Petrie gets it. I was so afraid we were going to sign Gooden for 3 years. I am now again optimistic for the future. We did not get anymore draft picks, but at least he cleaned the slate for next year.

If we are considering building a mediocre team, then Gooden is not that bad. But if you want to build a Championship team in the future, then I think it is a good move that we let go of the mediocre player ( Gooden ) to increase playing time for the much more promising young players we have now in Thompson and Hawes ( and maybe for Griffin or Thabeet if we get one of the two next year ):)

Yep id say thats it, were going youth here. Complete youth and KT is the last piece to rid along with maybe beno. We will be taking a PF/C and PG in the draft im confident of that.

I wonder if the waiving was in time for Gooden to join a playoff team. My guess would be that he had an offer in place and thought that playing major minutes on a playoff team would mean more exposure and a better contract for next year than playing meaningless (and hopefully scarce) minutes on a bottom feeder. That would at least explain the massive amount of money he's walking away from. It would also explain why he was cut so late. There must've been an awful lot of bartering going on, to get him and his agent down to that buyout.

I am guessing it depends on how well the do sopping Beno if they shop him. As or right now he is our only pg. So we have a need for a 3rd Big AND a point guard be it backup starter whatever. I think we Draft Griffin and overpay for Sessions.

Why are we giving away talent? Some of you think Gooden is worthless, but there is demand for a player like him. We could have used him in a sign and trade this summer, as part of a package. Now we have zero. This is purely a money move, not a basketball move. Hey Maloof's buyout Martin, JT,Garcia, and the rest of our players. Lets give away the farm.

He's a FA -- the only trade would have been a sign and trade. And he's close enough in value to an MLE guy that nobody is going to offer oyu anything for him -- in this market in particular they are just going to offer him the MLE.

This move saves money, but its not only a money move -- its a REBUILDING move. Clear those veterans away, wipe the slate clean, and start over. Its a different game. If we are a 50 win team right now and we dump Gooden in a buyout, then that's a money move. That's capitulation much like trying to trade Chandler was capitualtion for New Orleans. But when you are the worst team in the league the rules are different -- then you are trying to dump as many vets, as many salaries, save as much money, invest in as much youth as possible. That's why this move is a positive -- it underscores the front office's apparent sudden embracement of a rebuilding philosophy.

Ok he accepted a buyout saving the kings 1.8mil then it says almost all of the rest he is owed by the kings will be covered. what does that last line mean? coverd by whom?
