Tyreke's Assist Rate Shooting Up

rainmaker

Hall of Famer
This is an article showing Reke's assist rate improving considerably since Smart took over. It's been quite obvious Reke has improved in his running of the offense and creating for others since Smart took over. Still, some see no improvement. This chart should help those people out.

Quick excerpt from the article.
Over the past two weeks, Evans' assist rates have been consistently high. Since the loss to Minnesota, which was his only double-digit assist game of the season, Reke hasn't fallen below an assist rate of 29 in any game. His recent five-game moving averages have been the highest of his career, showing a slice of point guard purity he's never before experienced.

This isn't to say Reke has all the sudden turned into the pure pg some hope for, but it does show improvement after the coaching change, as well as consistency, which some say Reke has neither of. As we get more practice time and Reke really starts to soak up what Smart is teaching him, and gets more comfortable with the offense, I expect his assist numbers to keep rising.

this is nice to see!! but tyreke should never become a "pure pg." they're not common in the modern nba, and the notion a lotta people have that the "pure pg" is a key ingredient to championship aspiration is fantasy at best. tyreke is a next-generation kind of guard. he's strong as an ox, can attack the rim with almost unmatched ferocity, and is developing a greater sense of awareness about where to put the ball when defenses collapse on him. remember when bonzi wells took the spurs to task in the paint in the '06 playoffs? 'reke's got the potential to beat up smaller guards his entire career in just the same fashion, but on steroids...

and i love how keith smart is coaching tyreke. he understands what his talents are, and hopes to maximize them. helping tyreke understand where to put the ball when he attracts significant defensive attention has nothing to do with being a pg of any kind. it has everything to do with being an aggressive player. dwayne wade knows what to do when a defense focuses in on him. so does kobe. so does durant. so does lebron. these guys aren't pg's. they're aggressive offensive talents who make their teams better by exploiting defensive pressure with the pass. when you're gifted in this way, that's what playmaking is all about. doesn't need to be more complicated than that...

I think his overall game is improving right along with the assists. Some how the team needs to get themselves more open shots, that is shots they have a decent chance of making. Some of this is moveing without the ball instead of covering spots. Tyreke needs to improve his assists where he is not 'in the air', that is driving or jumping up. He's good at those and doing more but two handed sharp passes are yet to come. His progress is encouraging for me as his attitude has been.

Its been 7.2 assits a game since that Dallas debacle, which is the same numbrr Mike Conley and Andre Miller average. And he's doing it on a team that is last in the league in shooting at 40.0%.

It's Tyreke's fault that the other guys are shooting 40% though

I think it's an interesting comment on the opinions of Kings fans around here that I sincerely cannot tell if you are serious or joking.

I hope you are joking, and I get it.

Yea, I'm joking lol. I just can't stand the people who think Tyreke should be a finished product and putting up 25-7-7 a night at age 22.

Tyreke is still trying to figure out what he is, so is Cousins, but when they do, watch out!

I'm interested to know what his usage is though.

Tyreke's a beast, Cousin's is a beast, Jimmer will be very good... just need the right coach to implement the right system and put good role players around these guys for it to all come together. Sadly doesn't look like it'll happen this year.

I said in a post either very early this year or in the summer that the assist/turnover issue would be key to determine if the Kings win or not this year. But in particular, in the last five minutes of the game, when so many games in the NBA are won or lost, and defenses become much better. Does anybody have that stat? Because I'd be shocked if it was close to being good. It's good that Tyreke is getting more assists; I just want to see the TOs and the bad shots go way down in the 4th quarter so we can have a chance of winning.

It will with time and experience, under proper coaching. We just have to reset our minds to think like this is his 1st or 2nd season in the league, because clearly he didn't learn much under Westphal. And these sort of things aren't skills that can be easily improved working alone in the offseason or antyhing like that. It's hard for us as fans to swallow, but it is what it is. We can either b*tch about it, or be forward looking.
