Tyreke on the Grant Napear Show

Bench
Just heard Reke on Grant's show. Reke said he's going to be in LA working with Mitch Richmond. Sounds like a great decision that he's seeking help from a great shooter. On top of that, as you all may know, is that he's working with another good shooter Geoff Petrie. Wouldn't mind seeing Reke shoot like Mitch. If he shoots the ball consistently like Mitch with the way he goes to the basket, we'll all know he'll be a All-Star for many years. Reke also mentioned that his footwork was a problem that led to the leaning back shots and how he liked playing the 2 with IT. Just good to see our 2 cornerstones, Reke/DMC putting in the work.

I see GP's hands in this one. Now let's hope Mitch teaches a true three pointer and not the infamous Mitch Richmond variety? I like what is happening. Perhaps Tyreke might get some motivation by looking at the #2 jersey retired and hanging from the rafters.

I like what I see here. I have been saying time and time again (and I actually just posted it in another thread without even seeing this one yet) that it should be IT and Tyreke at guard together starting. They complement each other very well and Thornton will be able to produce off the bench if we keep him. Depending who we draft, I'm looking forward to seeing the lineup of IT/Tyreke/(Harrison Barnes? MKG? Someone from FA/trade?)/(Drummond? JT?)/ DMC.

Good to hear. Very good to hear. Also glad to hear he's working on his footwork which is a problem, where it seemed part of the reason he would fade is because he doesn't create enough space on his jumpers off the dribble, which he's more than capable of doing. With his speed and handle, a consistent step back similar to Pierce would be great for him. Also hopes he gets more comfortable in triple threat if he does play the 2, as too often he needs a few dribbles to get his rhythm, which makes him easier to guard. But if he goes back to point as Smart hinted at, I think pulling up off the dribble, on balance is a bigger key. Hope Petrie is correcting all these damn mixed signals.

That should be our motto. "Sacramento, where mixed signals happen."

Forgot to mention that Grant asked him what position he would like to play next season and he said the 1,2, or 3 but did mention that he likes the ball in his hands. Grant's next question was about how well he played with IT while MT23 was injured and Reke said something about how he had more of a rhythm at the 2 because at the 2 he can have the ball in his hands or IT can help him bring it up the floor. I'm pretty sure Reke and IT mentioned that they knew each other when they were kids so they do have a good relationship.

Good to hear. Love Mitch. He could do it. High point man in an All Star game he didn't start in.

Now if they could just arrange to have Tyreke work out for a few months with John Stockton that would be a great thing.

Wasn't he planned to be working with that shooting doc throughout the summer though?

I mean, I assume each one of the people he's been working with has a different style and gives him different things to follow in his shot - wouldn't it be better to stick to one guy and do as he says throughout? (In terms of shooting)

Well it's very rare for players to stick with one "trainer" for an entire offseason of personal workouts. I'm sure the shot doc has many other commitments - be it players or school teams or whatever have you.

I think the main thing is to keep the goal in mind and not get too caught up in the mechanics. The goal is to have Tyreke be able to first consistently hit open mid-range jumpshots, then moving on to hitting those off the dribble at different speeds (2 dribbles in from the 3 point line, pulling up in transition etc.). Your concerns are valid though, but the thing with Tyreke is that his release is pretty fine. He's not bringing the ball so far behind his head anymore. The primary issue is his balance, where he's leaning back too much. IMO addressing that issue isn't going to bring up as many differences as you would have in the actual shot release, where some would advice a certain amount of flick, where to bring the ball up through and to etc. That's where you'd get a lot of differences, from the way Kevin Martin brings it up from the hip, or Ray Allen kinda holds the ball out further in front, or how Jimmer shoots itfrom his shoulder ... But if you talk about balance it's a pretty standard thing, how you ground your foot before jumping, getting the right amount of lean etc.

Agreed. Tyreke played better with IT on the floor last year. The line of thinking that IT took the ball out of Tyreke's hands, which hurt Tyreke's game, was wrong.

It is interesting that we've gone from the shot doc, to Petrie, to Mitch Richmond. Makes you wonder if there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Makes me a little concerned whether confusion will arise from these different "coaches". The ad hoc nature of this also makes me wonder. Doesn't exactly connote a well thought out intelligent plan to improve his shot, more of a catch as catch can approach. I hope he quits bouncing from coach to coach and just gets a set regiment to improve his shot and does it religiously every day. You can have three great professors teaching you the same subject, but unless you get down to studying you're not going to get it.

Tyreke Evans is a 2 Guard period!!

I think the biggest move that Coach Smart could make is making Evans the starting Shooting Guard, bring Marcus Thornton off the bench and Petrie going out and procuring a legitimate, 6'9-6'10 Small Forward that can shoot.

Forgive me if this has been brought up before and please have mercy on me if this is truly an idiotic idea, but why can’t we put Thornton at the one and Evans at the two?

Agree with this except that I'll take a SF anywhere above 6'7" considering guys like Lebron and Melo don't even fit into the 6'9-6'10 range...

tunnel vision. i think he's shown his role is an off the bench scorer who can close games with the best of them, question with him is with his new contract can he put his ego aside and be willing to come off the bench on a losing team.

I have mercy on you.

The only reason I asked was after reading this interview back from 2010.

Joe: Last year you played some point guard. Is there anything you work on that applies specifically to that position?
Marcus: Yeah, yeah, well you know unfortunately cp3 went down, so I had to take over at times. I’ve been playing point guard my whole life, so I’m used to it.
Joe: Do you like playing point guard?
Marcus: Yeah, you’re always in charge of the tempo, you’re running the team getting everybody passes. It’s fun.

Thornton is in no way a PG.

The intangibles that Thornton brings is clutchness and tenacity, both of which I love, but he doesn't remotely have the instincts to play the PG position.

DeMarcus Cousins probably thinks he can play PG, but that doesn't mean he actually can.

Yeah well tell that to the Kings FO. Seriously though, what the heck do you think he's doing in SAC? He's here to practise, work on his shot, and Petrie happens to want to work out with him. Your hate for Tyreke is really getting out of hand. Even when a guy tries to work hard and work with pros to improve you question his plan and work ethic.

Yah I heard that comment too. I think it would be a good pairing because IT is good at getting the ball to the open man and Evans is good at creating for himself. With MT off the bench it would leave a lot more shots for Reke. Especially if we play with Williams at 3 (or Outlaw).

Cousins once told Calapari that he could play PG. That doesn't make him one!

OK ya’ll, got it. I just thought that since he took over the point for CP3 when he was injured and he said “I’ve been playing point guard my whole life”, that maybe he had some pretty good point guard skills.

have you watched any of the games with marcus thornton since he arrived? your eyes tell you the truth not what he claims. terrence williams has more pg skills than MT

When CP3 was injured that season, it was Darren Collison who was starting at PG for the Hornets and Thornton was just a gunner SG who put some big scoring games. He might have pinched in at bringing the ball up the court when Collison was taking a breather on the bench but he is pure SG that does not have a play making bone in his body.
